Campgrounds and RV parks near Shasta Lake, CA

Boating, water-skiing, swimming, and fishing are the headline activities, with houseboat rentals available at several marinas on the lake. The reservoir holds about 16 fish species, including rainbow and brown trout, kokanee, largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, channel and white catfish, crappie, bluegill, and white sturgeon. Bank anglers do best in early spring; in summer trout move deep, and trolling is most effective at depths of 30 to 70 feet. Lake Shasta Caverns, a limestone cave system on the McCloud Arm reached by boat shuttle, runs guided tours daily. Shasta Dam offers free guided visitor tours. Hiking, picnicking, mountain biking, and hunting are also popular in the surrounding national forest, and Whiskeytown Lake and Lassen Volcanic National Park are both within day-trip range.

Shasta Lake has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate: hot, dry, sunny summers and cool, wet winters. Summer is peak season. June through August brings reliable sun, water temperatures comfortable for swimming, and full marina operations, but afternoon highs in nearby Redding routinely top 95 F, with July averages near 99 F and triple-digit days common. Private RV parks fill weeks in advance for July, August, and holiday weekends. Spring (April and May) and early fall (late September into October) are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild temperatures and lower demand. Lake levels typically peak in spring after the wet season and can drop significantly by late summer, occasionally affecting boat ramp access. Winter is the wettest stretch, with December the rainiest month; most Forest Service lakeside campgrounds operate on a reserved season of roughly mid-May through mid-September and shift to limited services outside that window. Wildfire risk runs high from summer into fall, and the Shasta-Trinity National Forest has seen large fires that triggered campground, road, and trail closures, so checking forest alerts before travel is essential.

Private parks along I-5 offer the standard full-hookup setup: 30/50-amp power, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, and laundry, with easy big-rig access. Forest Service campgrounds on the lake are more rustic. Developed sites typically have paved spurs, picnic tables, raised fire rings, tent pads, and bear-proof food lockers, but most have no hookups and rely on vault or chemical toilets. Bears are active around the lake, so all food and scented items must be stored in the provided lockers. California restricts moving firewood to limit tree pests; buy local and burn on site. Summer brings intense sun and triple-digit heat, so shade and air conditioning matter. Cell coverage is solid near Redding and along I-5 but spotty in the lake's side canyons. Water levels fluctuate, so the distance from a campsite to the shoreline can change significantly through the season.
