Campgrounds near Stallion Springs, California
Stallion Springs is a small mountain community in the Tehachapi Mountains of Kern County, California, sitting at roughly 4,000 feet of elevation between Bakersfield and the Mojave Desert. RV travelers use it as a quiet base for exploring the Tehachapi Pass region, the southern Sierra foothills, and the Antelope Valley to the south. Private RV parks cluster in and around the town of Tehachapi, about a 20-minute drive north. Indian Hill Ranch RV Park and Mountain Valley RV Park sit closest, both within the Tehachapi area and offering hookup sites for travelers. Down the grade toward the San Joaquin Valley, Orange Grove RV Park and Resort, Bear Mountain RV Resort, and Bakersfield Travel Park give travelers warmer, lower-elevation options near Bakersfield. Public camping is available at Tehachapi Mountain Park, a Kern County facility located 8 miles southwest of Tehachapi with 61 family campsites and two group facilities, useful for shorter dry-camping stays in a pine-shaded mountain setting at roughly 6,000 feet.
Things to do near Stallion Springs
The Tehachapi Loop, a working railroad spiral where freight trains pass over themselves on the grade, is about 15 miles from Stallion Springs and a reliable family stop. Tehachapi Mountain Park offers hiking on the Nuooah Nature Trail and a 10-horse corral adjacent to the Horseshoe Campground for equestrian use. Brite Lake is open year-round for day use, camping, and fishing. Wind Wolves Preserve, roughly 30 miles away, has hiking trails through grasslands and oak woodland with seasonal wildflower displays. The Tehachapi Depot Museum and downtown Main Street cover local railroad and pioneer history. Glider rides operate at Mountain Valley Airport, taking advantage of the strong ridge lift the area is known for. Several small wineries and the Pacific Crest Trail crossing east of town round out a multi-day itinerary.

Stallion Springs sits high enough that conditions differ from the San Joaquin Valley floor. Summers are warm and dry, with daytime highs typically in the mid 80s Fahrenheit and cool nights, making June through early September the most popular RV window. Wind is a year-round factor in the Tehachapi Pass, with gusts that can exceed 50 mph at times; high-profile rigs should check forecasts before crossing the pass, particularly in spring.
Winter brings cool days, frosty nights, and occasional snow at higher elevations. Tehachapi Mountain Park is generally open year-round, but winter snows may force road closures, and all winter visitors and campers are advised to carry tire chains. Most precipitation falls between November and March, with December and February typically the wettest months. Spring is mild with green hillsides and wildflowers at lower elevations like Wind Wolves Preserve. Fall is dry and clear, often the best balance of pleasant temperatures and lighter crowds for RV travel.

How to book a campsite
Private RV parks in the Tehachapi area, including Indian Hill Ranch RV Park and Mountain Valley RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. For Bakersfield-area options like Orange Grove RV Park and Resort, Bear Mountain RV Resort, and Bakersfield Travel Park, reservations are recommended on weekends and during travel holidays. At Tehachapi Mountain Park, individual family campsites are first-come, first-served only, with no advance reservations accepted; payment is by envelope on site. Group camp areas at the park can be reserved in advance through Kern County Parks and Recreation. For peak summer weekends, book private parks several weeks ahead. Always confirm rig length, hookup type, and pet policies at the time of booking.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of high-desert ranch country and pine-covered mountain terrain. Cell service is generally good in town and at lower-elevation parks but can be patchy in the hills around Stallion Springs and inside Tehachapi Mountain Park. The access road to the county park is a narrow, twisty two-lane route that becomes steeper as it climbs, which matters for longer fifth wheels and motorhomes. Wind is a defining feature of the Tehachapi Pass; secure awnings and loose gear. Wildlife sightings include deer, coyotes, ground squirrels, and occasional bears at higher elevations, so use bear-aware food storage at Tehachapi Mountain Park. Grocery, fuel, and propane services are available in Tehachapi, with larger stores down in Bakersfield. Fire restrictions are currently in effect at Tehachapi Mountain Park, with no campfires allowed and only propane BBQs and cook stoves permitted.

Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see which listings offer it, then review the host's delivery radius and per-mile fee. Pro tip: delivery to Tehachapi Mountain Park or Brite Lake is a smart move, your RV is set up when you arrive and your vacation starts the moment you unpack.

Pro tip: map your full route first (campgrounds, side trips, fuel stops) and pick the listing whose mileage package matches, you'll save money and avoid surprises at drop-off.

kerncounty.com/government/county-administrative-office/parks-recreationWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Stallion Springs?

Summer days climb into the upper 80s but cool quickly after sunset, great sleeping weather for RV camping in Stallion Springs. Winter brings chilly nights in the 30s and occasional snow at higher elevations. Pro tip: time an April visit with the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve bloom about an hour south, the orange hillsides are unforgettable.
weather.gov/hnx/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay in Stallion Springs?
You'll be fine: first time renting an RV in Stallion Springs is easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, tank dumping, and the propane system so you leave knowing exactly how everything works. The roads in Cummings Valley are wide and lightly trafficked, which makes Stallion Springs an unusually friendly place to find your sea legs before tackling Tehachapi Pass on Highway 58. If nerves are still a factor, choose a Class B campervan rental in Stallion Springs or a small Class C, both drive almost like a large van. Pro tip: do a quick lap of your neighborhood before heading to the campground, ten minutes of practice makes a real difference.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stallion%20Springs%2C%20CaliforniaWhat if something breaks down on the road?
Don't sweat it: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RV rental on RVezy through the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on Highway 58 at Tehachapi Pass, parked at Brite Lake, or boondocking nearby. Your host is also a phone call or text away for quick questions like how to reset the converter, they know their RV better than anyone. Pro tip: take a 30-second video during your walkthrough of where the spare tire, fuses, and shut-off valves live, future-you will be thankful when parked under the stars.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Stallion Springs?

Joshua Tree National Park sits roughly 200 miles southeast (about 3.5 hours) for desert sunsets. Los Angeles is just 110 miles south (around 2 hours) for a city-to-mountains contrast. Pismo Beach on the Central Coast is around 150 miles west (about 3 hours) for ocean dunes. Death Valley is roughly 180 miles northeast for otherworldly landscapes. Note: cross-border travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/directions.htmHow much should I budget for fuel?
Fuel is easy to plan for once you know the numbers. A Class C motorhome typically gets 8 to 12 MPG, a Class A averages 6 to 10 MPG, and a Class B campervan rental in Stallion Springs usually gets 14 to 20 MPG. Gas in Kern County recently runs roughly $4.40 to $4.90 per gallon, with diesel a bit higher: check current prices before your trip. A 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C therefore lands around $110 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fuel up in Tehachapi or Bakersfield before heading into the mountains, prices climb once you hit Highway 58 east toward the Mojave and many smaller stations don't carry diesel.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-gasoline-data-facts-and-statisticsHow far in advance should I book a campground near Stallion Springs?
For most local spots, two to four weeks ahead is plenty, but the most popular sites fill faster. Tehachapi Mountain Park and Brite Lake are managed by Kern County Parks and tend to book up four to six weeks ahead for spring and fall weekends. California State Park sites such as Red Rock Canyon (about an hour east) can be reserved up to six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia. National forest sites in the nearby Sequoia and Los Padres areas use Recreation.gov, also up to six months ahead. Pro tip: aim for a Sunday through Thursday booking if you're flexible, midweek almost always has openings even on holiday weekends.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Stallion Springs?
Driving here is more relaxed than you'd think. Stallion Springs sits in Cummings Valley with wide, quiet two-lane roads that are easy to navigate in any size RV. The big thing to plan for is wind, the Tehachapi Pass corridor along Highway 58 is one of the windiest in California (it's why you see the giant wind turbines), and gusts of 40 to 60 mph happen regularly, especially March through May. Check the California Highway Patrol's wind advisories before heading east. Snow is possible from December to March at elevations above 4,000 feet. Pro tip: if winds top 45 mph, delay your drive a few hours, hosts are flexible and would much rather you arrive late than fight a crosswind on the pass.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Stallion Springs?
You'll have plenty of options. Full-hookup RV parks like Indian Hill Ranch RV Park and Mountain Valley RV Park in Tehachapi offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, and laundry. County parks like Brite Lake provide hookups along with a central dump station and potable water fill. Tehachapi Mountain Park is more rustic with vault toilets and no hookups, but unbeatable pine-scented sites. If you need to dump tanks mid-trip, dump stations are available in the Tehachapi area and at truck stops along Highway 58. Pro tip: pick up fresh water and ice in Tehachapi before heading up to Stallion Springs, the local grocery has everything you need at fair prices.
kerncounty.com/government/county-administrative-office/parks-recreationWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Stallion Springs?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Stallion Springs comes fully equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8, a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via roof air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include a TV, Wi-Fi hotspot, outdoor speakers, awnings, and onboard generators for off-grid stays, perfect for the Tehachapi Mountains' starry nights. Bedding and kitchen basics are often included: check each listing's amenities tab to confirm. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and RV type up front, then read the host's amenities list, that combo gets you the right rig in under five minutes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stallion%20Springs%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Stallion Springs make customizing your trip simple. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables ($5 to $15/day), generators ($25 to $50/day if not built in), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75/trip), kitchen kits, and bike racks: every listing shows its add-ons and fees up front on the booking page. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Stallion Springs or nearby Tehachapi, and many hosts offer delivery within a 25 to 50 mile radius for a per-mile fee. Mileage packages are clearly posted and some hosts offer unlimited mileage for longer trips. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a generator into one booking, you'll show up empty-handed and start your family RV trip in Stallion Springs in 10 minutes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stallion%20Springs%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy with a major credit or debit card when you book, no cash exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held on your card before pickup and released after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the condition it left. To avoid hiccups: do a walkthrough video at pickup, photograph the exterior and interior, respect the mileage and generator hours in your listing, and return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement. Pro tip: keep your fuel receipts in the glove box, they save time at drop-off and confirm your refill.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold weather and winter trips in Stallion Springs?
Winter in Stallion Springs can be magical with the right rig. Nighttime lows can drop into the 20s and occasional snow dusts the Tehachapi peaks, so look for listings that mention heated holding tanks, insulated underbelly, propane furnace, and electric heaters: several local hosts spec their RVs for four-season use. Many keep their listings active year-round, so winter availability is strong and rates are often the lowest of the year, a smart play if you want a cheap RV rental in Stallion Springs and don't mind a jacket. Pro tip: book a site with 30-amp shore power at Indian Hill Ranch RV Park, run an electric heater overnight to save propane, and wake up to snow-dusted oaks outside your window.
