Campgrounds near Stebbins, California
Stebbins is a small unincorporated community in Kern County, in the southern San Joaquin Valley of California, roughly 16 miles west of Bakersfield. The community sits on flat agricultural land at about 300 feet elevation, and almost all developed RV infrastructure is clustered in and around Bakersfield rather than in Stebbins itself. Travelers staying near Stebbins typically use Bakersfield as the practical base for full-hookup sites, supplies, and propane.
The closest options include Rosedale Village RV Campland on the west side of Bakersfield, plus Bakersfield River Run RV Park, Bakersfield RV Resort, and Bakersfield KOA closer to the city center, with Bear Mountain RV Resort further out. These parks offer paved pads, 30 and 50 amp service, and easy access from State Route 99 and Interstate 5. From Stebbins, day trips reach the Kern River corridor, Sequoia National Forest, Lake Isabella, and the Carrizo Plain National Monument, all within roughly two hours by RV.
Things to do near Stebbins
The Kern River corridor is the main outdoor draw. The Kern River Parkway Trail, a roughly 30-mile paved path along the Kern River, runs through preserved riparian habitat where rabbits, roadrunners, and other wildlife are protected from development, making it an easy ride or walk for families based at a Bakersfield-area RV park. Visitors can also book a river rafting trip along the Kern River through outfitters upstream in the canyon. About an hour northeast along Highway 178, Lake Isabella offers shoreline recreation, hiking trails with lake views, and lakefront campgrounds. The 93,000-acre Wind Wolves Preserve, the West Coast's largest nonprofit nature preserve, sits south of Bakersfield and is popular for spring wildflower hikes. Day-trip range also covers Sequoia National Forest groves and the Tehachapi Loop railroad viewpoint.

The Stebbins area has an arid valley climate with mild, sometimes wet winters and very hot, dry summers. Precipitation is scarce, and from June through September it essentially never rains. The warmest month is typically July, with average highs near 97°F, and the wettest month is usually February. Spring, from March through May, is the most comfortable window for RV travel: daytime temperatures sit in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit and the valley grasslands and nearby foothills bloom with wildflowers in March and April. Summer brings triple-digit afternoons, so families generally aim for shaded sites, full-hookup power for air conditioning, and early-morning activities. Fall cools steadily and is reliably dry. Winter is the rainy season and also brings tule fog to the valley floor, which can reduce highway visibility on Interstate 5 and State Route 99. Snow is very rare at this elevation.

We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!

Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.

How to book campgrounds near Stebbins
Private RV parks around Bakersfield, including Rosedale Village RV Campland, Bakersfield River Run RV Park, Bakersfield RV Resort, Bakersfield KOA, and Bear Mountain RV Resort, take reservations directly through their own websites and phone lines, and the KOA also books through the national KOA reservation system. Most accept reservations year-round and allow short notice in shoulder seasons, but spring weekends, holiday weekends, and any dates overlapping Bakersfield events or motorsports at Kern County Raceway Park fill earliest, so booking several weeks ahead is sensible. For nearby public lands, U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in Sequoia National Forest along the Kern River are reserved through Recreation.gov, while Kern County regional park campgrounds use the county parks reservation system. Cancellation windows and pet rules vary by park, so confirm at the time of booking.
What to expect
Expect a flat, agricultural landscape on the valley floor, with mountains visible in most directions. Roads into and around Stebbins are paved and easy for large rigs, and the Bakersfield-area RV parks are designed for full-size motorhomes and travel trailers, with pull-through sites, sewer hookups, and 50 amp service common. Cell coverage is strong across the valley and weakens once you climb into the Kern River Canyon or the Tehachapi Mountains. Summer heat is the dominant planning factor: pavement temperatures are extreme, pets should not be left in rigs, and water consumption is high. Tule fog in winter can delay morning travel. Grocery, fuel, propane, RV repair, and big-box shopping are all available in Bakersfield, and Meadows Field Airport handles regional flights if guests are flying in to join the trip.
