Campgrounds near Wasco, California
Wasco sits in the southern San Joaquin Valley of Kern County, roughly 25 miles northwest of Bakersfield and just off State Route 46 between Interstate 5 and Highway 99. The town markets itself as a historic center of California rose production, and the surrounding farmland of almond, pistachio, and citrus orchards defines the landscape RV travelers will see in every direction. There is no campground inside the Wasco city limits, so travelers typically base out of nearby parks and drive in for the day.
The closest public option is Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park in Tulare County, which preserves the only California town founded, financed, and governed by African Americans, established in 1908. Private RV parks cluster along the Highway 99 and Interstate 5 corridors: Rosedale Village RV Campland and Bakersfield River Run RV Park sit on the Rosedale Highway side of Bakersfield, Bakersfield RV Resort serves travelers passing through on Highway 99, and Lost Hills KOA Journey is positioned at the Highway 46 and I-5 junction for road trippers cutting across to the coast.
Things to do near Wasco
Wasco's signature event is the Rose Festival, historically held the weekend after Labor Day at Barker Park, with a parade, pageant, car show, and, when offered, guided tours of working rose fields. At Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, families can tour the restored early-20th-century buildings, including a schoolhouse, church, library, and Colonel Allensworth's home, and watch for burrowing owls and other valley wildlife. In Bakersfield, RV guests staying along the Kern River can use the Kern River Parkway multi-use trail for cycling, while the Buck Owens Crystal Palace and the Kern County Museum offer indoor options. Day trips reach the southern Sierra Nevada foothills, Tule Elk State Natural Reserve at Buttonwillow, and the wildflower hills around Highway 58 in spring.

Wasco has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers are sweltering, arid, and clear, and winters are cool and partly cloudy, with the annual temperature typically ranging from the high 30s to near 100 degrees Fahrenheit. July and August routinely push past 100 degrees, so RV travelers with kids or pets should book sites with shade, full hookups for air conditioning, and access to a pool. Lost Hills KOA Journey and Bakersfield River Run RV Park both operate seasonal pools.
Spring, from March through May, is the most comfortable window: mild days, wildflower blooms along Highway 58 and in the Carrizo Plain area west of town, and almond orchards in bloom in February. Fall brings the Wasco Rose Festival in early September and pleasant evenings by mid-October. Winter is the wettest stretch, and tule fog can settle over Highway 99 and I-5, sharply reducing visibility on early-morning drives. Snow is not a factor in the valley itself, but Tehachapi Pass and the Grapevine to the south can close briefly during winter storms.

Great hosts, and so beautiful!! Had the best time! I ordered for a delivery and before I even arrived they had it set up and ready to go. My family had the best experience and for that I'm truly greatful! 10 out of 10 recommend!
We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!

Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.
Public sites at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park are handled through the California State Parks system. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia online or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. The state park stays open year-round and usage tends to be light, so last-minute and walk-up stays are usually possible outside of special-event weekends.
Private parks, including Rosedale Village RV Campland, Bakersfield River Run RV Park, Bakersfield RV Resort, and Lost Hills KOA Journey, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA bookings can also be made through the KOA app or koa.com. For festival weekends in Bakersfield and the Wasco Rose Festival in early September, book four to eight weeks ahead. Big-rig travelers should confirm site length, as several Bakersfield-area parks offer pull-throughs well over 60 feet.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat, agricultural terrain with long sightlines, heavy truck traffic on I-5 and Highway 99, and a mix of orchard and farmland scenery. At Colonel Allensworth, the 15-site John Whitehead Campground sits behind the reconstructed historic town, operates year-round, and has paved RV pads that accommodate rigs up to about 35 feet. Sites are non-hookup but include picnic tables, fire rings, and shade ramadas, with potable water, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station nearby.
Private parks in Bakersfield lean resort-style. Bakersfield River Run RV Park sits along the Kern River channel just off Highway 99 and offers full hookups, a swimming pool and hot tub, recreation room, fitness area, laundry, and an on-site store with RV supplies and propane. Lost Hills KOA Journey sits at the intersection of Highway 46 and Interstate 5 at Exit 278, with shaded pull-through sites, full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, restrooms and showers, laundry, a small store, a seasonal pool, playground, dog park, four horse corrals, and four tent sites.
