Campgrounds and RV parks near Willits, CA

The Skunk Train departs the Willits Depot on East Commercial Street for the Wolf Tree Turn, a two-hour, 16-mile round trip that climbs to the line's summit at 1,740 feet, passes through Tunnel No. 2, and drops into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon, with a brief stop at Crowley to see the iconic Wolf Tree. Seasonal excursions include holiday-themed trains that often sell out on weekends. Outside town, Jackson Demonstration State Forest offers day-use trails and forested groves along Highway 20 toward Fort Bragg. Lake Mendocino, about 30 minutes south near Ukiah, has swim beaches, boat ramps, and shoreline trails. Inland, the Eel River near Potter Valley is good for trout fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. The Mendocino coast, including Russian Gulch and Van Damme state parks, is about an hour west on Route 20.

Willits has a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The coastal influence keeps summer afternoons cooler than valleys to the east, while morning fog often burns off by mid-morning. Annual precipitation averages around 48 to 51 inches, with most of it falling between October and April, and December is typically the wettest month. Light snow falls occasionally, averaging only a few inches a year in town, and accumulation is rare. Late spring through early fall is the most reliable RV window. PG and E Eel River Area Trout Creek Campground operates April through September only, and many smaller sites in the Lake Pillsbury area share that seasonal pattern. July and August bring highs in the mid-80s with very little rain, which is ideal for redwood hikes and river swimming but also the peak fire-restriction window in Mendocino County. Shoulder months of May, September, and October tend to offer mild days, lighter crowds, and easier same-week availability.

Willits-area parks range from full-hookup pads in town to rustic forest sites with no services. Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort and Redwood Empire Fair RV Park provide 30 and 50 amp service, sewer, water, and easy paved access for larger rigs. PG and E Eel River Area Trout Creek Campground has no hookups, no dump station, a 34-foot rig length limit, and the final stretch of access road is rough washboard dirt that is hard on suspension and slow going for trailers. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent east of Highway 101 around the Eel River and Lake Pillsbury, so download maps before leaving town. Summer fire restrictions are common in Mendocino County, and campfire and stove rules can change with little notice. Bears, raccoons, and rodents are active in forested sites, so food should be stored inside the RV or in provided lockers.
