Campgrounds and RV parks near Woodlands, CA

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area offers swimming, surfing, surf fishing, camping, and hiking, and it is the only California State Park where vehicles may be driven on the beach. Off-road enthusiasts bring ATVs and side-by-sides; families without OHVs can still walk the sand, fly kites, and beachcomb. At Pismo State Beach, the Monarch Butterfly Grove draws large overwintering colonies from November through February, and the Oceano Lagoon next to the campground is a quiet birdwatching spot straight from camp. Pacific Dunes Ranch leads horseback rides from its stables through creek habitat to the beach. The town of Pismo Beach, with its pier, shops, and seafood, sits a few minutes north.

The Central Coast climate is mild year-round, but the camping experience varies sharply by season. Summers are warm, dry, and clear; winters are cool, wet, and partly cloudy. Late spring through early autumn is peak season: Oceano Campground is open year-round and is one of the most popular in the state, with summer weekends filling the moment the booking window opens. Coastal fog, locally called the marine layer, often blankets mornings in June and July before burning off by midday. Winter brings the heaviest rain and the highest tides. High tides, heavy rains, and blowing sand determine whether vehicles can drive down the beach without getting stuck, and access to the OHV and camping area may be restricted periodically when Arroyo Grande Creek runs high during winter storms or water releases at Lopez Dam. Western snowy plover nesting also closes large sections of dune habitat: the Southern Exclosure has been operated as a seasonal closure to all public access during the March 1 through September 30 nesting season since at least 2004. Spring and fall offer the best balance of dry weather, open access, and lighter crowds.

Site styles vary widely. The state-park Oceano Campground has paved spurs and a mix of standard and hookup sites, with the hookup loop offering water and 30-amp electric and parking spurs limited to about 36 feet. Pismo Sands RV Resort offers a more polished resort layout with level, paved, full-hookup pull-through and back-in sites. Pacific Dunes Ranch backs directly onto the dunes, with stables on site, and Le Sage Riviera lines Highway 1 just north of the state beach entrance. Beach camping at Oceano Dunes is a different proposition. Sand conditions can trap two-wheel-drive vehicles, and even capable rigs occasionally get stuck. Expect daytime OHV activity along the beach, cool ocean breezes, and a posted 15 mph speed limit on the sand.
