Campgrounds near Ault, Colorado
Ault is a small farming town in Weld County on the northern Front Range, roughly ten miles north of Greeley and about a half hour east of Fort Collins. RV travelers use it as a low-traffic base for reaching the Cache la Poudre corridor, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the shortgrass prairie to the east. Interstate 25 and US Highway 85 both run within easy driving distance, which keeps grocery, fuel, and dump-station access straightforward.
Most overnight options sit in the surrounding communities rather than in Ault itself. The Pawnee National Grassland spreads across northern Weld County to the east, and campgrounds like Greeley RV Park, Platte River Fort Resort and Event Center, Fort Collins North / Wellington KOA Journey, Falcons Landing RV Park, and Loveland RV Resort form a ring of full-hookup properties within a short drive.
Elevation on the plains here sits around 4,900 feet, so nights stay cool even during hot summer afternoons. Big-rig access is generally good on the county road grid, and most parks in the area accommodate slide-outs and longer trailers.
Things to do around Ault
The main regional draw is the Pawnee Buttes, twin sandstone formations that rise about 300 feet above the surrounding prairie in northeastern Weld County. A roughly two-mile trail leads out to the first butte, and the Overlook and Lips Bluff areas are closed to public access from March 1 through June 30 to protect nesting hawks, eagles, and falcons.
Birders come for the grassland species. Crow Valley Recreation Area, set in the Pawnee National Grassland near Briggsdale, is a popular birding site where more than 200 species have been recorded. The 68-mile Pawnee Pioneer Trails Scenic and Historic Byway starts in Ault and runs east through Crow Valley, past the Pawnee Buttes, and on toward Fort Morgan or Sterling, passing overlooks and historic sites along the way.
For water and mountain days, Boyd Lake, Horsetooth Reservoir, and the Poudre Canyon are all within an hour.

December - February
40° / 21°F 10 mmCold, dry, and windy; snow squalls possible
Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. May is typically the wettest month on this part of the plains, and afternoon and evening thunderstorms with strong wind and hail are common through spring and early summer. July and August turn hot and dry, and fire restrictions are frequent on the national grassland, so check current stage restrictions before planning a campfire.
Spring visitors should note the raptor-nesting closure at the Pawnee Buttes cliffs from March 1 through June 30. Dispersed camping is allowed year-round on the Pawnee National Grassland itself, with no fee, though campers must follow the Motor Vehicle Use Map and stay out of posted closure areas. Crow Valley Campground, the one developed campground on the grassland, is generally open in the warmer months and has ten sites with vault toilets and no hookups.
Winter camping is possible at private RV parks on the Front Range, but snow, wind, and single-digit overnight lows are common from December through February.

Super friendly and helpful hosts. This was our second time renting their RV and will always check with them before booking anything else!

I had an excellent time on my hunt this season. The trailer was perfect. Having hot shower and warm bed every night made the trip so much more enjoyable. Sometimes it’s having the things we take for granted like indoor plumbing, lights and a roof over your head can really elevate your outdoor experience. Would absolutely recommend this!

This RV was wonderful, it had absolutely everything you need and is immaculate! The host Jonas and his wife are amazing and there for you every step immediately if you need anything. Totally enjoyed it and stress free!
Nancy J. - Sep 2024
This camper had everything we could possibly need or want. It has a big commercial fridge, all the linens and pillows, kitchen utensils, coffee maker, and even an ice cream maker! It is beautiful, spacious, and so comfortable for our family of 4. Jonas and Nanda were fantastic to rent from. We loved that they delivered and set it up for us. They showed us all the ins and outs, and even came out to do a shower head replacement for us mid stay! We will absolutely rent from them again, and next time we’ll plan to try out that ice cream maker!

How to book near Ault
Private RV parks near Ault, including Greeley RV Park, Fort Collins North / Wellington KOA Journey, Falcons Landing RV Park, Loveland RV Resort, and Platte River Fort Resort and Event Center, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends fill early, especially during Greeley Stampede week and Fort Collins events, so reserve well ahead.
For nearby Colorado state parks such as Boyd Lake and Lory, all sites are reservation only, and a reservation can be made no more than six months before the arrival date. Reservations go live online at midnight through CPWshop.com and by phone at 1-800-244-5613.
For federal sites, including Crow Valley Campground on the Pawnee National Grassland, book through Recreation.gov. Dispersed camping on the grassland is free and does not require a reservation.
What to expect on the ground
Expect open, wind-exposed terrain. The Ault area is high plains, not mountains, so most sites are level with long sight lines and limited shade. Wind gusts across the grassland can be strong year-round, and visitors regularly report conditions strong enough to make tent setups difficult. Awnings should be retracted when unattended.
Cell coverage is uneven once travelers leave the towns, with signal fading to 3G or dropping entirely in parts of the grassland. Downloading offline maps before heading toward the Pawnee Buttes is a good idea, and a Motor Vehicle Use Map is more reliable than Google Maps on the back roads.
Private RV parks on the Front Range corridor typically offer full hookups, laundry, and pull-through sites suitable for larger rigs. On the grassland, expect vault toilets, no potable water at dispersed sites, and no hookups. Bring water, sun protection, and watch for livestock, pronghorn, and rattlesnakes in warm months.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ault, Colorado, even for larger Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels. Colorado does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal-use recreational vehicles. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from outside the US? You can book with confidence. After that, refund eligibility depends on factors like how far out your trip is. If your host cancels, RVezy will help you with a refund or travel credit. Because RVezy handles cancellations centrally, you won't see different policies on each listing. Pro tip: book early to lock in your preferred rig, and reach out to RVezy support right away if your plans shift so they can walk you through your options.

Always confirm pet rules in the listing and let the host know how many pets are coming. cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/BoydLakeWhen is the best time of year for an Ault RV trip?

July is the warmest month, while September brings cooler nights, golden aspens in the foothills, and fewer crowds. Spring (April-May) can swing from sunny 70s to surprise snowstorms, so pack layers. Winter RV rental in Ault is possible with cold-weather-rated rigs, mainly for ice-fishing trips or ski-area basecamps, since temperatures can drop into the teens. Pro tip: shoulder-season weekends in September often deliver the best campsite availability and the cleanest mountain views.
weather.gov/bou/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay starting in Ault?
You'll do great, and Ault is actually one of the friendliest places in Colorado to learn. The roads around town (Highway 85 and Highway 14) are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked compared with the I-25 corridor, so first time renting an RV here feels far less stressful than starting in Denver. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, and dumping. Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan if you're nervous, and save the mountain passes for day two. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on rural Weld County roads before heading toward the foothills.
codot.gov/travelWhat if something goes wrong on the road during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Ault includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If you have a mechanical issue heading up to Estes Park or along Highway 287, one call connects you to help dispatched to your location. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip for booking or host questions, and your host is usually a quick text away too. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave Ault, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and plate for faster service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ault RV rental to Wyoming or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most Ault RV rentals, and an RV road trip from Ault into Wyoming is one of the area's best-kept secrets. You're only about 50 miles from Cheyenne, around 2 hours from Laramie, and within easy reach of Nebraska's Scotts Bluff. Just confirm out-of-state travel with your host on the listing page before booking, since a few prefer regional trips. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: popular loops from Ault include Cheyenne to Medicine Bow to Laramie, or the Pawnee Grassland to Scotts Bluff route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Ault RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier parts of budgeting an RV rental in Colorado. Northern Colorado gas prices typically run close to the national average, and Ault has convenient fill-up stations right on Highway 85. Plan on 8-10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10-14 MPG for Class C, 14-18 MPG for campervans, and 10-13 MPG for trucks towing travel trailers. For a 300-mile weekend loop to Rocky Mountain National Park and back, most renters spend $90-$160 on fuel. Pro tip: top up in Ault, Eaton, or Greeley before heading into the mountains, prices climb noticeably once you pass Estes Park.

National forest sites in Roosevelt National Forest book through Recreation.gov on the same six-month window. Private parks like the Fort Collins area KOAs usually have more flexibility but still sell out on holidays. Pro tip: target Sunday to Thursday nights for easier bookings, and set a calendar reminder six months before your trip dates to grab the prime lakeside spots.

If you're headed into Big Thompson Canyon or up to Estes Park, expect steep grades and switchbacks. Pro tip: check CDOT's COtrip app each morning for closures, particularly when crossing Trail Ridge Road in shoulder season.

Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at both pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to ensure your deposit comes back quickly.
