Campgrounds and RV parks near Leadville, CO

Turquoise Lake is the main draw. It has two boat ramps, shoreline trails, and stocked fishing for rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and brook trout, along with lake trout (mackinaw). The 6.4-mile Turquoise Lake Trail parallels the shoreline from the dam to May Queen Campground, and the 1.2-mile Turquoise Lake Nature Trail is a gentler loop. Independence Pass, the highest paved state highway in Colorado at 12,095 feet, opens seasonally west of Twin Lakes and connects to Aspen when clear. Mount Elbert and Mount Massive trailheads sit within a short drive, giving day-hike access to Colorado's two highest peaks. In town, the National Mining Hall of Fame and the Leadville, Colorado and Southern narrow-gauge railroad provide a rainy-afternoon backup plan. Ice fishing on Turquoise Lake continues through winter.

Leadville's high elevation compresses the camping calendar. Developed Forest Service campgrounds around Turquoise Lake and Twin Lakes typically open in late spring and close in early to mid-fall, with exact dates set by snowmelt and weather each season. Late-spring snows can delay openings, and some facilities restrict water and other services early and late in the season. July and August are the busiest months, with warm days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and reservations often filling for holiday weekends well in advance. September brings aspen color across the Sawatch, cooler nights, and thinner crowds, but freezing overnight temperatures are possible in any month at this altitude. Winter and early spring are the domain of private, year-round parks in and near town. Independence Pass closes to through-traffic from roughly late October until the week before Memorial Day weekend, cutting off the direct route to Aspen and forcing a long detour through Glenwood Springs. Check current fire restrictions before any trip, as the region enforces stage restrictions during dry periods.

Altitude drives most of the on-the-ground experience. Campgrounds sit between roughly 9,000 and 10,000 feet, so plan a slow first day, drink more water than usual, and watch children and pets for altitude symptoms. Overnight lows can drop below freezing even in July. Amenities vary. Many Forest Service sites have vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, but potable water is not guaranteed at every campground and has been unavailable at some sites in recent seasons. Bring enough water for drinking and for extinguishing campfires. RV dump stations in the Turquoise Lake area, at Printer Boy and White Star, have also been subject to seasonal closures, so confirm status before arrival. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine in summer. Start hikes early, and check current fire restrictions before lighting any campfire.
