Camping near Pierce, Colorado
Pierce is a small town in Weld County on Colorado's northern Front Range, roughly halfway between Fort Collins and the Wyoming border along US Highway 85. The surrounding landscape is high-plains shortgrass prairie at about 4,900 feet in elevation, with the Rocky Mountain foothills visible to the west and open ranchland stretching east. Its position makes it a practical base for RV renters who want to split time between mountain day trips and prairie recreation without paying front-range mountain-town rates.
RV parks in the immediate area include the Fort Collins North / Wellington KOA Journey just south along the highway, Greeley RV Park to the southeast, and Falcons Landing RV Park nearby. Slightly farther afield are the Platte River Fort Resort and Event Center and the Fort Collins / Lakeside KOA Holiday, both of which cater to larger rigs and family travelers.
Pierce sits within a short drive of Pawnee National Grassland, Fort Collins breweries and trails, Greeley's downtown, and Rocky Mountain National Park's eastern gateway at Estes Park about two hours west.
Things to do around Pierce
The biggest regional draw is Pawnee National Grassland, which covers roughly 193,000 acres in Weld County and is reached via CO Highway 14 east from Ault. Highlights include the Pawnee Buttes Trail, an approximately 2-mile route to sandstone formations that rise about 300 feet above the prairie, plus hundreds of recorded bird species and dispersed backcountry camping across the grassland. The Overlook and Lips Bluff areas are closed each spring for raptor nesting.
Fort Collins, about 30 minutes southwest, offers the Cache la Poudre River corridor, Horsetooth Reservoir, Old Town restaurants, and a large craft-brewery scene. Greeley, to the south, hosts the Greeley Stampede rodeo in summer and has a walkable downtown. Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park are within reach as a long day trip.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV season on Colorado's northern plains. May and June bring wildflowers to the grasslands and the greenest prairie of the year, but they also deliver the wettest weather, with afternoon thunderstorms, hail, and the region's peak tornado risk. The Overlook and Lips Bluff areas at Pawnee Buttes are closed from March 1 through June 30 to protect nesting hawks, eagles, and falcons.
July and August are hot, dry, and windy on the plains, with highs regularly climbing into the upper 80s and 90s. Afternoon lightning is common, and statewide fire restrictions frequently limit or ban campfires by mid-summer. Nights cool noticeably thanks to the elevation.
September and October are often the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights, thinner crowds, and better campground availability than the July peak. Winter is cold, snowy, and windy. Many private RV parks remain open year-round with limited services, while Crow Valley Campground on the grassland typically operates from spring through fall.

Super friendly and helpful hosts. This was our second time renting their RV and will always check with them before booking anything else!

I had an excellent time on my hunt this season. The trailer was perfect. Having hot shower and warm bed every night made the trip so much more enjoyable. Sometimes it’s having the things we take for granted like indoor plumbing, lights and a roof over your head can really elevate your outdoor experience. Would absolutely recommend this!

This RV was wonderful, it had absolutely everything you need and is immaculate! The host Jonas and his wife are amazing and there for you every step immediately if you need anything. Totally enjoyed it and stress free!

This camper had everything we could possibly need or want. It has a big commercial fridge, all the linens and pillows, kitchen utensils, coffee maker, and even an ice cream maker! It is beautiful, spacious, and so comfortable for our family of 4. Jonas and Nanda were fantastic to rent from. We loved that they delivered and set it up for us. They showed us all the ins and outs, and even came out to do a shower head replacement for us mid stay! We will absolutely rent from them again, and next time we’ll plan to try out that ice cream maker!

How to book a campsite
Private RV parks near Pierce, including Fort Collins North / Wellington KOA Journey, Greeley RV Park, Falcons Landing RV Park, Platte River Fort Resort and Event Center, and Fort Collins / Lakeside KOA Holiday, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Book summer weekends and holiday periods two to three months out, especially for pull-through and full-hookup sites that fit larger rigs.
For public land, Crow Valley Campground in Pawnee National Grassland books through Recreation.gov, with a maximum vehicle length of 35 feet on single sites and no RV hookups. Colorado state parks farther afield are reservation-only through CPWshop.com, with a booking window that opens six months before arrival at midnight Mountain Time and fills quickly for Front Range weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Expect open, wind-exposed terrain with limited natural shade. Private parks near Pierce typically offer full hookups, dump stations, laundry, and Wi-Fi, and most are set up for big rigs on gravel or paved pads. Cell service is generally reliable along the US 85 and I-25 corridor but thins out quickly on grassland back roads.
Crow Valley has drinking water and vault toilets but no RV hookups, so arrive with tanks topped off if using public sites or dispersed camping on the grassland. Fire restrictions are common in summer and can prohibit charcoal and open flames on short notice.
Wildlife along the plains includes pronghorn, mule deer, prairie dogs, rattlesnakes, and raptors. Afternoon thunderstorms can arrive fast in summer, so watch the sky and avoid exposed ridges and butte tops during lightning.
