Campgrounds near Twin Lakes, Colorado
Twin Lakes is a small unincorporated community in Lake County, Colorado, sitting at roughly 9,200 feet along Highway 82 in the San Isabel National Forest. The area is defined by two connected glacial lakes at the base of Mount Elbert, the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains, and serves as a staging point for hiking, boating, and 14er attempts.
Most developed camping sits within a short drive on Highway 24 toward Leadville or on Highway 82 toward Independence Pass. Private options in the corridor include Win Mar Cabins and Sugar Loafin' Campground near Leadville, along with Leadville RV Corral for full-hookup RV stays. South of Twin Lakes toward Buena Vista, Arrowhead Point Campground and Arkansas River Rim Campground provide river-adjacent sites with more amenities.
Elevation shapes every trip here. Sites cluster between 9,000 and 9,600 feet, nights run cold even in July, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. RV renters should plan for thinner air, variable cell coverage, and limited services once past Leadville.
Things to do around Twin Lakes
Twin Lakes Reservoir anchors the area's recreation. The reservoir spans 2,805 acres and supports sailing, water skiing, and fishing for lake, rainbow, and mackinaw trout. Paddleboard, kayak, and mountain bike rentals are available in town.
Hiking is the other main draw. Mount Elbert stands at 14,433 feet and Mount Massive, Colorado's second highest peak, reaches 14,421 feet, both with trailheads within a short drive, and the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail passes through the area. Independence Pass, the highest paved state highway in Colorado at 12,095 feet, climbs west from Twin Lakes toward Aspen and opens seasonally.
Leadville, about 30 minutes north, offers restaurants, groceries, the National Mining Hall of Fame, and the Leadville, Colorado & Southern narrow-gauge railroad, useful for a rest day between hikes.

The practical camping season runs from late May through mid-September. Forest Service campgrounds in the San Isabel National Forest are open seasonally from late May to early or mid September depending on the campground, with most open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Independence Pass is closed in winter and does not open until the Thursday before Memorial Day, and typically remains open until late October or early November depending on snow.
July and August are peak months. Afternoon thunderstorms build almost daily over the Sawatch Range, and above-treeline hikers should be off summits by early afternoon. September brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and aspen color, though overnight freezes are routine.
Winter effectively shuts down developed camping around Twin Lakes. Snowfall in Lake County is heavy, roads narrow, and water systems at most campgrounds are shut off. Dexter Point in Twin Lakes is open year round for first come, first served off-season camping, though private options closer to Leadville and Buena Vista offer more amenities in the shoulder season.
How to book campgrounds near Twin Lakes
Developed campgrounds in the San Isabel National Forest are managed through Recreation.gov. Reservation camping can be booked from 6 months ahead to 5 days ahead at Recreation.gov or 877-444-6777, and less than 5 days ahead is first-come, first-served only; reservations cannot be made through the local ranger district.
All sites at Parry Peak and Twin Peaks campgrounds are available on a first-come, first-served basis only, so arriving on a weekday morning is the safest approach in July and August.
Private parks such as Win Mar Cabins, Sugar Loafin' Campground, Leadville RV Corral, Arrowhead Point Campground, and Arkansas River Rim Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone, often opening reservations months in advance for peak summer weekends.
What to expect at Twin Lakes campgrounds
Expect high-elevation, primitive-leaning conditions at public sites: picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets, and trash collection, with limited or no potable water. Water is currently unavailable at Twin Peaks, and RV dump stations at Printer Boy and White Star Campgrounds remain closed, so arriving with full fresh tanks and empty waste tanks is essential.
Cell service is spotty once off Highway 24. Bears are active, so food storage rules apply. Fire restrictions change through the summer and can escalate to full bans during dry stretches.
Full hookups, showers, laundry, and reliable Wi-Fi are generally found only at private parks such as Leadville RV Corral, Sugar Loafin' Campground, Arrowhead Point Campground, and Arkansas River Rim Campground. Vehicles over 35 feet in length are prohibited over Independence Pass Road, so route planning matters for larger rigs.

On RVezy, you will typically find travel trailers from about $90 to $175 per night, campervans from $125 to $225, and Class C motorhomes from $175 to $325 per night, plus fuel and campground fees. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Twin%20Lakes%2C%20ColoradoWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Twin Lakes, Colorado?
Good news for first-timers: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Twin Lakes, Colorado. Colorado does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use RVs, including Class A motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers booked through RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your identification is verified through the platform during booking, so there is nothing extra to print or bring. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before your trip. Then you are cleared to cruise the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong near Twin Lakes?
Yes. Every RVezy booking includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore Twin Lakes Reservoir, Independence Pass, and the San Isabel National Forest with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV, and you choose your level of coverage during checkout so you can match protection to your comfort level and budget. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it removes the biggest worries renters have about cracked windshields, minor dings, or a flat on a gravel forest road. Pro tip: select your protection tier before adding extras like a generator so you see the full total upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Twin Lakes RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and the policy is not displayed on individual listings. Every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so a quick change of heart will not cost you. If a Colorado mountain storm, wildfire closure on Highway 82, or family emergency disrupts your Twin Lakes RV trip, RVezy's support team reviews qualifying situations case by case. Exact refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for July and August, then keep an eye on CDOT alerts for Independence Pass as your dates approach.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Twin Lakes?
Yes, Twin Lakes is one of Colorado's most dog-friendly basecamps, and plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental Twin Lakes travelers love. On RVezy, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see rigs that welcome dogs (some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, shown upfront). Once you arrive, leashed pups are welcome on most San Isabel National Forest trails, including the Interlaken Trail around the south shore of Twin Lakes Reservoir and sections of the Colorado Trail. Pro tip: pack a tie-out, extra water, and booties; the granite paths around 9,200 feet of elevation can get hot in July afternoons and snowy by October.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/psicc/recarea/?recid=12384Can the RV be delivered to my campground near Twin Lakes?
Yes. RV delivery Twin Lakes guests rely on is one of the easiest ways to skip mountain driving entirely. Many RVezy hosts based in Leadville, Buena Vista, and the Aspen area will deliver and set up the RV right at your site at Lakeview, White Star, Parry Peak, or Dexter Point Campground, level it, hook up power and water where available, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location and shown on the listing. Pro tip: message the host before booking with your campground name and site number so they can confirm the road in is rig-appropriate (Lakeview handles big rigs, while some dispersed spots do not).
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232067How many miles can I drive on a Twin Lakes RV rental?
You have plenty of room to roam. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and you will see it clearly on the listing before you book, ranging from generous daily allowances (often 100 to 150 miles per day) to RV rental with unlimited mileage on some campervans and trailers. From Twin Lakes, popular day trips are very doable: Leadville is about 18 miles north, Aspen is about 40 miles over Independence Pass (when open), Buena Vista is about 35 miles south, and Salida sits about 60 miles down US-24. Pro tip: if you are planning a bigger loop through Glenwood Springs or Rocky Mountain National Park, filter for unlimited-mileage rigs to keep your budget predictable.
codot.gov/travel/scenic-bywaysWhere are the best campgrounds near Twin Lakes, CO?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Twin Lakes sit inside the San Isabel National Forest at around 9,200 to 9,500 feet, with views of Mount Elbert (14,433 ft) and the Twin Lakes Reservoir. Top picks for RV camping Twin Lakes guests book again and again include Lakeview Campground (reservable on Recreation.gov, big-rig friendly, near the Colorado Trail), White Star Campground (tucked in trees near the historic village), Parry Peak Campground (along Lake Creek), Dexter Point Campground (lakefront), and Twin Peaks Campground west on Highway 82. Pro tip: confirm current water availability on Recreation.gov before you go, and fill your fresh tank in Leadville if needed.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232067When is the best time to visit Twin Lakes in an RV?
Summer is the sweet spot. Because Twin Lakes sits above 9,200 feet, the prime RV window is mid-June through mid-September, when daytime highs typically run in the 60s to mid-70s F and nights cool to the 30s and low 40s. July is the warmest month and the most reliable for Independence Pass being open (it typically closes for snow late October through Memorial Day). September delivers golden aspens along Highway 82 and far fewer crowds, but pack a 20 F sleeping bag, freezing nights start early. Pro tip: high-altitude monsoon thunderstorms roll in most July and August afternoons, so summit peaks like Mount Elbert by 11 a.m. and be back below treeline by 1 p.m.
weather.gov/pub/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Twin Lakes?
You will be in great shape, even if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the propane, water, slide-outs, leveling, generator, and dump procedure before you drive a single mile. From Twin Lakes village, the easiest route is north on Highway 82 to US-24 toward Leadville, a wide, well-maintained two-lane that handles RVs comfortably. Save Independence Pass for confident drivers, it is narrow and restricted to vehicles under 35 feet with no trailers. Pro tip: ask your host to demonstrate backing into a campground spur and have them text you a cheat sheet of pickup-day photos, most are happy to do it, and it makes your first night a breeze.
codot.gov/travelWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Twin Lakes?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 82, a dead battery at Dexter Point, or a jammed slide-out at Lakeview Campground is a phone call away from help, day or night. Cell service is patchy right at the lake but reliable in Leadville (about 18 miles north) and along most of US-24. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number and your RVezy trip details before leaving cell coverage, and download offline maps for the Sawatch Range so you can navigate if you lose signal in the canyons.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Twin Lakes, CO?
Twin Lakes is a launching pad for some of Colorado's most iconic drives. A classic RV road trip from Twin Lakes heads west over Independence Pass (when open, typically late May to October) to Aspen and Glenwood Springs, about 80 miles to soak in the hot springs. Head north to Vail and Glenwood Canyon via I-70, or south through Buena Vista and Salida to Great Sand Dunes National Park (about 150 miles total). Rocky Mountain National Park is roughly 150 miles northeast via Leadville and I-70. Cross-border trips to Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals; US-to-Canada travel may be allowed with host approval, so message the host through the listing first.
nps.gov/grsa/index.htmHow much will fuel cost on my Twin Lakes RV trip?
Easier to budget than you might think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually 10 to 14 mpg combined. Colorado gas prices typically run a bit above the national average; Leadville (about 18 miles north) and Buena Vista (about 35 miles south) have the closest stations to Twin Lakes, with Leadville being your last reliable fill-up before Independence Pass. Pro tip: for a 4-night family RV trip Twin Lakes loop covering 300 miles in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $160 in fuel. Going downhill from the pass, use engine braking to save your brake pads.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Twin Lakes?
Book early and you will have your pick. Reservable forest service sites at Lakeview Campground open on Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window, and summer weekends (especially July 4 and Labor Day) fill within hours of release. First-come, first-served campgrounds get tight Friday afternoons but are usually doable midweek. For July and August trips, aim to book your motorhome rental Twin Lakes hosts list on RVezy at least 2 to 4 months ahead, then lock your campsite the same week. Pro tip: if Lakeview is full, check Printer Boy and Belle of Colorado near Turquoise Lake just outside Leadville, similar scenery and often more availability.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232067What are the driving conditions like around Twin Lakes?
Mostly easy, with a couple of spots to plan around. US-24 and Highway 82 east of Twin Lakes are well-paved, two-lane mountain roads that comfortably handle motorhomes and travel trailers up to 40 feet. The big consideration is Independence Pass (Highway 82 west of Twin Lakes): it is restricted to vehicles under 35 feet with no trailers, and the pass closes for winter from roughly early November to late May. Expect afternoon thunderstorms in July and August and possible snow on the pass even in June and September. Pro tip: check CDOT's COtrip app the morning you drive, fill up in Leadville, and avoid Independence Pass after dark, the switchbacks and lack of guardrails are not beginner-friendly.
codot.gov/travelWhat hookups and amenities will I find at Twin Lakes campgrounds?
Plan for a beautiful, rustic experience. The forest service campgrounds around Twin Lakes (Lakeview, White Star, Parry Peak, Dexter Point, Twin Peaks) are dry camping only, with vault toilets and picnic tables and no water, electric, or sewer hookups at individual sites. For full hookups, head about 18 miles north to options near Leadville and Turquoise Lake, or about 35 miles south to RV parks in Buena Vista. Dump stations are available in Leadville and Buena Vista; check current status before you go. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Leadville and arrive with empty grey and black tanks so you can comfortably camp 3 to 4 nights off-grid.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232067What's inside a typical RV rental in Twin Lakes?
More creature comforts than you would expect at 9,200 feet. A typical campervan rental Twin Lakes hosts list on RVezy sleeps 2 to 4 with a convertible bed, fridge, two-burner stove, and indoor or outdoor shower. Class C motorhomes step up to sleep 5 to 7 with a queen over-cab bed, full kitchen, wet bath with toilet and shower, dinette, roof air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for everyone driving. Most rigs include a propane heater (essential, nights drop into the 30s even in July), a house battery for boondocking, and an awning. Wi-Fi and TV vary by listing. Pro tip: filter for rigs with a generator or solar so you can run the furnace overnight at off-grid sites like Dexter Point.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Twin%20Lakes%2C%20ColoradoWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose for my Twin Lakes RV rental?
Lots, and most are designed to make your trip easier. Common add-ons RVezy hosts offer near Twin Lakes include kitchen and linen kits, camp chairs, a portable generator, bike racks, propane fire pits, paddleboards (perfect for the Twin Lakes Reservoir), and pet packages. Pickup logistics are flexible: meet at the host's location in Leadville, Buena Vista, or the Front Range, or pay for delivery directly to your campsite. Mileage policies and per-mile overage fees are listed clearly on every listing before you book. Pro tip: ask your host to throw in a leveling block set and a 30-amp to 15-amp adapter, even if your campground has no hookups, you will want to plug into shore power if you stop overnight in Leadville en route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Twin%20Lakes%2C%20ColoradoHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Twin Lakes, CO through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never cash to the host. Your total includes the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, your chosen protection plan, plus any host add-ons like delivery or generator hours. The refundable security deposit is separate from your booking payment; it is held (not charged) on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with your host at pickup and dropoff, time-stamped footage is the easiest way to ensure your full deposit comes back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Twin Lakes during winter?
Yes, and it is a hidden-gem season for the right traveler. Some RVezy hosts in central Colorado offer winter-ready, four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces, ideal for ski trips to Ski Cooper (about 22 miles north), Copper Mountain (about 45 miles), or snowmobiling around Turquoise Lake. Most forest service campgrounds at Twin Lakes close by mid-October, so plan to stay at a winter-open RV park with full hookups in Leadville or Buena Vista where shore power keeps the furnace humming. Pro tip: at 9,200 feet, January nights regularly drop below 0 F, message the host before booking to confirm the rig is rated for sub-freezing camping, and budget extra propane.
