Campgrounds and RV parks near Brooklyn, CT

Outdoor activity centers on the Natchaug River corridor and the surrounding state forests. Nickerson Park Family Campground sits along the Natchaug, a trout-stocked river popular for fishing and lazy tube floats, with a walk back to the campground when the run ends. Charlie Brown Campground also borders the Natchaug, where small rapids and an on-site pond support swimming, tubing, and fishing. Mashamoquet Brook State Park covers more than 1,000 acres and contains the Wolf Den National Historic Site, along with the Table Rock and Indian Chair rock formations and a small museum near the entrance. Trails link the park's two campgrounds to swimming areas and to the historic Brayton Grist Mill. Off the trails, the Route 169 scenic byway threads through Pomfret and Woodstock past farm stands, orchards, and historic villages, and Foxwoods is about a half-hour south.

The main camping season in northeastern Connecticut runs from late spring through mid-fall. The two Connecticut state campgrounds at Mashamoquet Brook State Park operate seasonally from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, and most private parks in the area follow a similar window. Hide-A-Way Cove Campground typically opens in spring and closes in mid-fall. Spring shoulder weeks can be cool and wet, with rivers running high from snowmelt. Nickerson Park Family Campground is one of the earlier openers in the region and has been noted for accepting campers during shoulder-season weeks when other Connecticut grounds are still closed. Summer weekends and holiday weeks sell out first, and fall foliage weekends in late September and early October draw heavy demand from the Boston, Providence, and New York metros. Winter camping is limited. State campgrounds are closed, and most private grounds shut hookups down for the cold months. Confirm dates directly with each campground before booking travel.

The two state campgrounds inside Mashamoquet Brook State Park differ in amenities. Wolf Den has running water and showers on sites 1 through 35; the smaller Mashamoquet Brook loop has fewer, more wooded sites and uses composting toilets. Pads at Wolf Den are relatively short and level, which matters for longer rigs. The park's dump station has been listed as closed in recent seasons, so plan tank service elsewhere. Private parks lean toward full amenities. Nickerson Park Family Campground offers full-hookup sites with up to 50-amp service and cable, plus pull-throughs for larger rigs, a camp store, and river-side sites that use a dump station on departure. Charlie Brown Campground provides oversized grass sites with water and 30/50-amp electric, a camp store, and a recreation hall. Cell coverage is generally reliable along Route 6 and I-395 and can drop off inside the state forest.
