Campgrounds near Chester Center
Chester Center sits in the lower Connecticut River Valley in Middlesex County, within easy reach of the state park system and several private RV parks. The area combines river access, wooded state parks, and small New England villages, giving RV travelers a compact base for exploring central and southeastern Connecticut.
Private RV parks in the area include Wolf's Den Family Campground, a 35-acre family campground in East Haddam with full-service RV sites and themed weekend programming, and Grandview Camp Resort in Moodus, a quieter 22.5-acre property with full hookup sites, water and electric sites, tent sites, and cottages. State park camping options nearby are more primitive: Devil's Hopyard State Park offers a small drive-in campground near Chapman Falls, while Gillette Castle State Park and Hurd State Park both host paddle-in river campsites along the Connecticut River.
Chester Center itself is a compact village with restaurants, shops, and a seasonal ferry crossing to Hadlyme, useful for reaching Gillette Castle without a long drive.
Things to do near Chester Center
Gillette Castle State Park is the marquee attraction, with tours of the 24-room stone mansion built by actor William Gillette, wooded trails that follow the route of Gillette's former narrow-gauge railroad, and river views from the terrace above the Connecticut River. The Chester-Hadlyme ferry links the village directly to the castle grounds during the warm season.
Devil's Hopyard State Park centers on Chapman Falls, a multi-stage cascade dropping more than sixty feet, with hiking trails, brook and brown trout fishing on the Eightmile River, and a covered bridge near the falls. Hurd State Park adds Connecticut River overlooks, mountain biking, and picnic areas within a thousand-acre wooded park.
Family-oriented amenities are concentrated at the private parks: Wolf's Den Family Campground has a pool, mini-golf, fishing pond, and themed weekend events, while Grandview offers a pool, a rec hall, and quieter grounds.

The camping season in this part of Connecticut is short and clearly defined. Wolf's Den Family Campground typically runs from late April through mid-to-late October. Grandview Camp Resort generally opens in mid-April and closes at the end of October. Devil's Hopyard State Park Campground is available from mid-April through early-to-mid October, with the reservable window concentrated between late May and early September. Gillette Castle State Park's river campsites operate from May 1 through September 30, as do the paddle-in sites at Hurd State Park.
Summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busiest window, especially at private RV parks that host themed events. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations, though the shoulder season is also when hemlock-shaded state park sites feel coldest at night.
Winter closures are the norm. Most private campgrounds shut down entirely, and state park campgrounds near Devil's Hopyard and along the river are closed through the cold months.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book near Chester Center
Connecticut state park campsites are reserved through the state's ReserveAmerica portal. Reservations can be made up to eleven months in advance and, for river campsites and Devil's Hopyard, must be booked at least two days ahead of arrival. Walk-ins are not permitted at Devil's Hopyard, Hurd, or Gillette Castle river camping.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Wolf's Den Family Campground takes nightly, weekly, monthly, and seasonal reservations by phone or through its website. Grandview Camp Resort accepts online reservations through Firefly and by phone.
RV renters should confirm rig-length limits before booking. Devil's Hopyard sites are on the smaller side, typically 25 to 35 feet, while Wolf's Den's full-hookup sites are built for big rigs with 20, 30, and 50 amp electric, water, and gray-water service.
What to expect at Chester Center campgrounds
Expect a mix of full-service private RV parks and primitive state park camping. Wolf's Den provides 20/30/50 amp electric, water, gray-water hookups, cable, WiFi, a pool, a dump station, and a general store. Grandview offers full-hookup and water-and-electric sites on shaded grounds along with cottages, a pool, and modern bath houses.
The state park sites are basic. Devil's Hopyard has picnic tables, fire rings, and pit toilets, but the water in the park is not safe to drink, so campers must bring their own. Hurd State Park and Gillette Castle river sites are paddle-in only, with pedestal grills, composting toilets, and no vehicle access; campers must break camp by 9 a.m.
Pets are welcome at Wolf's Den but are not allowed at Devil's Hopyard, Hurd, or Gillette Castle campgrounds. Cell coverage can be spotty in the wooded valleys.
