Campgrounds and RV parks near Conning Towers-Nautilus Park, CT

The main draw is maritime history. Mystic Seaport Museum recreates a 19th-century seaport with historic ships and demonstrations, and the Submarine Force Museum in Groton houses the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine, which was built locally. Families often pair those visits with Mystic Aquarium and the Children's Museum of Southeastern Connecticut. For outdoor days, Bluff Point State Park is a coastal peninsula on Long Island Sound with rocky beaches, woodlands and bluffs, and Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park overlooks the Thames River. The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center near Mystic maintains trails through a wooded preserve. Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino are both within an easy drive for evening dining and entertainment.

Southeastern Connecticut has warm, humid summers and cold, snowy, windy winters, with temperatures across the year typically ranging from about 23°F to 80°F in Groton. Most private RV parks and Connecticut state park campgrounds operate on a seasonal schedule tied to that pattern, roughly mid-spring through mid-fall. Sun Outdoors Mystic, for example, runs an April-to-October season, and Strawberry Park Campground opens from Memorial Day weekend and closes in mid-October. Aces High RV Park in East Lyme is a notable exception that stays open year-round. Summer is peak season. School vacation, beach weather, and Mystic's tourist traffic combine to fill sites early, especially on weekends and around the July 4 and Labor Day holidays. Reservations several weeks or months out are standard, and Connecticut DEEP accepts state-campground reservations up to 11 months in advance. Spring and fall are quieter. Shoulder-season nights are cool, foliage peaks in October, and many private parks stay open with reduced activities.

Private parks in the Mystic area tend to be family-oriented resorts rather than rustic campgrounds. Sun Outdoors Mystic offers RV sites with water and electric (30- or 50-amp), a honey-wagon pump-out service, dump stations, a heated pool, mini golf, pickleball, laundry and a camp store; full sewer hookups at individual sites are not standard. Strawberry Park Campground is a larger wooded resort with full-hookup pull-throughs including 50-amp service, three pools, a splash pad, arcade and themed event weekends. Aces High RV Park offers full hookups with cable at every site. Sites at the larger resorts include picnic tables and fire rings, and several parks host a significant seasonal-camper population, so weekend arrivals can be busy. Bug spray and tick checks are worth planning for, since Connecticut forests are known for ticks that can transmit Lyme disease.
