Campgrounds and RV parks near Cos Cob, CT

Water dominates the itinerary. Cos Cob Harbor and the Mianus River feed into Long Island Sound, and day trips to Greenwich Point Park add beach access, kayaking, and shoreline walking. Inland, the Mianus River Gorge Preserve carries family-friendly hiking through old-growth hemlock only a short drive north. RV renters using Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park find Canopus Lake with a sandy beach, seasonal boat rentals, and an extensive trail network when the campground is open. Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park sits adjacent to Lake Welch, with convenient access to swimming beaches, hiking trails, and neighboring state park facilities in one of New York's largest state parks. Kettletown State Park offers over six miles of trails and scenic overlooks of Lake Zoar on the Housatonic River, Heckscher State Park has beach frontage and bike paths on Long Island's Great South Bay, and Floyd Bennett Field is a launch point for Jamaica Bay birding and cycling.

Camping in this region is heavily seasonal. Most state park campgrounds within reach of Cos Cob open in mid to late May and close in early to mid October, so winter and early-spring RV trips are limited to private parks or federal sites that stay open longer. At Fahnestock State Park, the main campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, though the group wilderness campground remains open for 2026, so renters targeting Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park should verify status before planning. Kettletown State Park Campground will remain closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons due to flood damages sustained during a heavy rainfall event in August 2024, so renters should confirm reopening status before planning a stay. Connecticut's other state park campgrounds run roughly from early May into late September. Summer weekends fill fastest, especially at lakefront loops. Fall brings cooler nights and foliage across the Hudson Highlands and Housatonic valley, while spring shoulder dates offer easier availability and quieter trails.

Sites near Cos Cob lean rustic rather than resort-style. Full hookups are uncommon at the state parks listed here; expect a picnic table, fire ring, and grill, with potable water and shared restrooms or showers at central bathhouses. Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park accommodates trailers or RVs up to 30 feet on select sites, and there are no electrical hookups for trailers. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond Campgrounds, and no pets are permitted. Cell coverage is generally solid on the coast and thinner in the Hudson Highlands and Housatonic valley. Alcohol is also prohibited at Kettletown State Park, and rules vary elsewhere, so campers should check the specific facility page before arrival. Roads into Cos Cob itself pass through dense suburban traffic, so drivers of larger rigs should route via I-95 or the Merritt Parkway carefully, noting the Merritt's low bridges and commercial vehicle restrictions.
