Campgrounds near Daniels Farm
Daniels Farm is a residential area within Trumbull, in Fairfield County, Connecticut, roughly a half hour inland from Long Island Sound. RV travelers using it as a base find a mix of state park campgrounds in the Western Highlands and privately operated RV parks within a short drive north along Route 8 and I-84.
The closest state option historically has been Kettletown State Park on Lake Zoar in Southbury, though the campground there remains closed following flood damage from an unprecedented August 2024 rainfall event and will stay closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Black Rock State Park in Watertown is the nearest active state campground, sitting on 439 acres of wooded ledges around Black Rock Pond. Private choices in the same corridor include Branch Brook Campground in Thomaston, directly across from Black Rock, and Gentile's Campground in Plymouth.
For travelers heading toward the shoreline, Totoket Valley RV Park offers another option east of New Haven. Together these five properties cover the range from full-hookup RV parks to rustic state park loops.
Things to do near Daniels Farm
The Western Highlands north of Daniels Farm are the main draw for outdoor activity. Black Rock State Park has hiking on the blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail, a swimming beach, and a stocked trout pond, and Kettletown's day-use area on Lake Zoar remains open for hiking and picnicking even while its campground is closed. Lake Zoar itself is a popular spot for boating and fishing on the Housatonic River.
Families staying at Branch Brook Campground or Gentile's Campground can use on-site amenities between day trips. Nearby attractions include Quassy Amusement Park on Lake Quassapaug, Lake Compounce, and the Railroad Museum of New England in Thomaston. The Long Island Sound shoreline, state forests along the Housatonic, and the Appalachian Trail corridor to the west are all within a reasonable drive.

Connecticut's public campgrounds run a strictly seasonal calendar. Black Rock State Park opens in late May and closes at noon on Columbus Day in October, with an early-season weekends-only period starting the third Saturday in April when only portable toilets are available and the bathhouse and running water are not yet open. After September 1, standard sites at Black Rock are available for advance reservations on Friday and Saturday nights, with Sunday through Thursday held for walk-ins, and cabins close after Labor Day.
Private parks stretch the shoulders of the season. Branch Brook Campground and Gentile's Campground typically run warm-season calendars from spring through fall, giving RVers options in the cooler shoulder months when state sites are closed.
Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly across the region, so booking well in advance is advisable. Fall foliage in the Litchfield Hills typically peaks in mid-October, overlapping the final week of state-park camping.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book campgrounds near Daniels Farm
Connecticut state park campgrounds, including Black Rock State Park and Kettletown State Park, are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica portal operated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be placed up to eleven months in advance, which matters for prime summer weekends. A two-night minimum applies to most stays, and a $9 reservation fee is charged.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations directly. Branch Brook Campground, Gentile's Campground, and Totoket Valley RV Park take bookings through their own offices or websites rather than the state portal. For any Connecticut state park stay, the primary occupant must be at least 18, present valid photo ID and vehicle registration at check-in, and check in before 10:00 PM.
What to expect at Daniels Farm campgrounds
Expect a mix of styles. State park campgrounds in this region tend toward wooded, closely spaced sites with basic amenities: fire rings, picnic tables, bathhouses with hot showers, and a dump station. Pets and alcohol are prohibited at Black Rock and Kettletown, hookups are limited, and maximum RV length at Kettletown is 28 feet. Some sites at Black Rock have recently been upgraded from non-electric to standard electric.
Private parks in the Thomaston and Plymouth area lean more full-service, generally offering electric, water, and sewer hookups, laundry, and family amenities, with a significant share of seasonal renters at some locations. Check-in at state parks is 1:00 PM with noon check-out, and Connecticut prohibits bringing in out-of-state firewood to slow the spread of forest pests.
