Camping near Deep River Center, Connecticut
Deep River Center sits on the west bank of the lower Connecticut River in Middlesex County, roughly midway between Hartford and Long Island Sound. The surrounding lower river valley is a working landscape of forested hills, tidal coves, and small villages, and it holds several of the state's better-known camping options within a short drive.
RV travelers have a mix of choices in the area. Wolf's Den Family Campground in East Haddam features 213 spacious RV sites designed to accommodate large rigs, with 20/30/50 amp electric service, water, and gray water hookups, picnic tables and fire rings at every site, and a complimentary dump station. Grandview Camp Resort operates as another full-service private park with hookups, a pool, and organized activities. Riverdale Farm CampSites, south of Deep River in Clinton, sits close to the shoreline and Interstate 95. State-run camping is more rustic: Devil's Hopyard State Park offers 21 spacious, wooded sites near the park's scenic waterfall, and Gillette Castle State Park has one primitive, tent-only riverside site on the banks of the Connecticut River, accessible only by paddle craft.
Most visitors use the area as a base for the Connecticut River Valley, the shoreline, and the historic villages along Route 9.
Things to do near Deep River Center
The signature attraction is William Gillette's stone castle. Built in 1914 by William Hooker Gillette, the actor, director, and playwright most famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, the 14,000-square-foot stone fortress sits 200 feet over the Connecticut River. Guided tours run in season, and many trails follow the former path of the actor's three-mile-long, quarter-scale, narrow-gauge railroad, with near-vertical steps, stone-arch bridges, and wooded trestles spanning up to forty feet.
Devil's Hopyard is the other major draw. Chapman Falls drops more than sixty feet over a series of steps in a Scotland Schist stone formation, and the water continues as the Eight Mile River through the park's hemlock-canopied picnic area. The park is one of the premier birding locations in Connecticut, and anglers pull brook and brown trout from the Eightmile.
Paddling the Connecticut River, exploring the shoreline beaches at Hammonasset, and riding the Essex Steam Train round out most trip itineraries.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book a campsite near Deep River Center
State-park sites are booked through the Connecticut State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for today and up to 11 months in advance at Devil's Hopyard, and reservations are required for campsites at Devil's Hopyard, and walk-ins are not permitted. River camping at Gillette Castle uses a similar window: reservations must be made 2 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance.

What to expect on the ground
The two types of camping in this area feel very different. Private campgrounds are family-oriented and social. Wolf's Den has 213 spacious RV sites designed to accommodate large rigs, with 20/30/50 amp electric service, water, and gray water hookups, picnic tables and fire rings at every site, and a complimentary dump station. Riverdale Farm CampSites offers hookup sites along the Hammonasset River with a swimming pond and playground.
State-park camping is more basic. Outhouses serve the Devil's Hopyard campground, and the water at Devil's Hopyard State Park is unsafe for drinking, so campers should plan to bring their own water. Reservations are required with no walk-ins accepted, pets are prohibited, and no running water is available. Cell coverage in the wooded valleys is spotty.
