Campgrounds near Durham, Connecticut
Durham sits in central Connecticut's Middlesex County, roughly midway between Hartford and the Long Island Sound shoreline. The town has no campground within its borders, so RV travelers base out of parks in the surrounding towns of Portland, East Hampton, North Branford, and Clinton, all within a short drive of Durham via Routes 17, 68, and 77.
The area mixes private RV parks with state park land along the lower Connecticut River. Portland Riverside Campground sits directly on the river north of Durham, while Nelson's Family Campground occupies a large wooded property in nearby East Hampton. Totoket Valley RV Park serves travelers who want quick access to New Haven, and Riverdale Farm CampSites is positioned near the shoreline in Clinton.
Hurd State Park, on the Connecticut River in East Hampton, adds a paddle-in primitive option for campers arriving by canoe or kayak. Together these properties cover partial and full-hookup RV camping, family resort-style stays, and rustic river camping within about a thirty-minute radius of Durham.
Things to do near Durham
The lower Connecticut River corridor is the main draw. Hurd State Park sits on the river in East Hampton and is one of just four Connecticut state parks with boat-in campsites accessed by canoe or kayak. Its trail network is popular with hikers and mountain bikers, and viewpoints such as Split Rock are reachable from the parking area.
Families staying at Nelson's Family Campground have access to a swimming pool, a pond, sports courts, mini-golf, and planned weekend activities on-site. Riverdale Farm CampSites offers fishing and a swimming pond for guests.
Day trips from Durham reach Gillette Castle State Park, the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Hammonasset Beach State Park on Long Island Sound, and the shops and restaurants of Middletown, about ten minutes north.

Most private campgrounds in this part of Connecticut operate on a seasonal schedule that runs from mid-April through late October. Portland Riverside Campground is open May through October, and Nelson's Family Campground follows an April-to-October window. Riverdale Farm CampSites typically opens in the spring and takes reservations for the coming season through the winter months.
State park camping on the river is even more compressed. The boat-in campsites at Hurd State Park and the other lower Connecticut River state parks are managed by the state and available from May 1 through September 30, exclusively for overnight stops by travelers on the river.
Summer weekends, especially in July and around Independence Day and Labor Day, book out earliest. Spring and early fall offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong foliage color from late September into mid-October. Winter RV camping options in the immediate Durham area are extremely limited, since most parks winterize their hookups after the season closes.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book a campground near Durham
Private parks in the Durham area handle their own reservations. Nelson's Family Campground, Portland Riverside Campground, Totoket Valley RV Park, and Riverdale Farm CampSites all take bookings directly by phone or through their websites. Deposits are typically required at booking, and holiday weekends often carry minimum-stay requirements.
Hurd State Park's river campsites use a different system. Reservations are required and walk-ins are not accepted. Bookings can be made up to eleven months in advance through the Connecticut State Parks reservation portal on ReserveAmerica, and campers must arrive and depart by canoe or kayak only. Reserve summer weekends as far ahead as possible.
What to expect
Campgrounds near Durham range from small, quiet RV parks to larger family-oriented resorts. Totoket Valley RV Park is a small park that works well as a base for exploring New Haven and the shoreline. Portland Riverside Campground has 22 sites, is RV-only with no tents, accepts big rigs, and provides 30-amp electric and water hookups but no on-site dump station.
Nelson's Family Campground spans 175 acres with hundreds of sites, is big-rig friendly, and each gravel or grass pad includes cable, electric, water, and either sewer or gray water hookups. Expect a busier, activity-driven atmosphere aimed at families, with a pool, general store, laundry, and a dump station on-site.
Hurd State Park is the opposite end of the spectrum: no vehicle access, no pets in the camping areas, and primitive sites. Grocery, fuel, and dump-station options are within a short drive of every private park.
