Campgrounds and RV parks near Glastonbury, CT

Glastonbury sits in central Connecticut along the east bank of the Connecticut River, about 10 miles southeast of Hartford. RV travelers use it as a base for river recreation, state park hiking, and quick access to I-91, Route 2, and Route 3. The area is dense with small towns rather than large public campgrounds, so most RV sites are at privately operated parks a short drive south and east of the city. The closest full-service options cluster around East Hampton, Portland, and East Haddam. Nelson's Family Campground and Markham Meadows Campground are both in East Hampton, roughly a half hour from downtown Glastonbury, and offer hookups plus family amenities. Portland Riverside Campground sits along the Connecticut River in Portland, while Grandview Camp Resort is set on a hillside in the Moodus section of East Haddam. For a more primitive experience, Hurd State Park offers primitive camping for boaters on the Connecticut River, reachable only by canoe or kayak.

Private parks handle reservations directly. Nelson's Family Campground, Markham Meadows Campground, Portland Riverside Campground, and Grandview Camp Resort take bookings by phone or through their own websites, and payment is typically due at the time of booking. Some also list availability through third-party platforms. Reservations for river campsites at Hurd State Park can be made via ReserveAmerica, up to 11 months in advance of arrival date. Reservations must be made 2 days ahead of arrival, and campsites are for use by those in canoes or kayaks only, with no vehicle access or overnight parking permitted. For summer weekends and any holiday, book two to three months out. Larger rigs should confirm site length, hookup amperage, and sewer versus gray-water setup before reserving.
