Campgrounds near Greenwich, Connecticut
Greenwich sits in the southwest corner of Connecticut, an hour or less by road from a cluster of state parks and national recreation lands in New York's Lower Hudson Valley and Long Island. Campgrounds within reach are almost all publicly managed, so trip planning revolves around New York State Parks and the National Park Service rather than private RV resorts.
Within roughly a two-hour drive, RV travelers can choose between wooded state-park sites in the Hudson Highlands, a rare urban National Park Service campground on the Brooklyn waterfront, a full-hookup marina park across from Manhattan, and a Long Island bayfront campground. Options include Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park, a primitive campground with no hookups that can accommodate smaller RVs, trailers, and campervans up to 30 feet long, Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area, Liberty Harbor RV Park, and Heckscher State Park.
Most sites in this region are tent-oriented or dry, so travelers hauling larger rigs should confirm length limits and hookup availability before booking.
Things to do around Greenwich
The draw for RV travelers based near Greenwich is variety within short driving distance: coastline on Long Island Sound, Hudson River overlooks, and the trail networks of Harriman and Fahnestock state parks. Harriman State Park alone has more than 200 miles of trails that range from easy to strenuous, 31 lakes, two beaches, and lake activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating.
Families often pair a campground stay with a day trip into Manhattan by train from Greenwich or Stamford, a visit to the Bronx Zoo, or a beach day on Long Island's south shore. Cyclists use the paths at Floyd Bennett Field, and anglers fish Lake Welch near Beaver Pond and the ponds at Fahnestock, which is stocked with rainbow trout each spring.
Historic sites, farm stands, and small downtowns along the Connecticut coast add rainy-day options.

The camping window in this region is short and heavily concentrated between mid-spring and mid-fall. Beaver Pond in Harriman typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only through the start of May, then runs a regular reservation season from early May through mid-October. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock generally runs from mid-May through mid-October, and Heckscher State Park on Long Island also operates seasonally.
Summer weekends fill fastest. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, which means weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures and the busiest beaches, while late spring and early fall offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations.
Winter camping options are limited. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round for RVs with hookups, but state-park campgrounds are closed and roads through park interiors may not be plowed.
How to book campgrounds near Greenwich
New York State Park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock, and Heckscher, are reserved through the New York State Parks ReserveAmerica system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8 a.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. weekends from March 15 through Labor Day. From mid-May to early October, same-day reservations are permitted only until 3 p.m., and no walk-ins are allowed.
Floyd Bennett Field's campground in Gateway National Recreation Area is booked through Recreation.gov, typically up to six months in advance. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is reserved directly through the park's own website. For peak-summer weekends, book the moment the reservation window opens.
What to expect at campgrounds near Greenwich
Amenities vary widely by campground, so match the site to the rig. Beaver Pond features 125 campsites designed for up to two tents and six people per site, with select sites able to accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet in length. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, and the campground offers full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station, though there are no electrical hookups. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and only one vehicle is allowed per site.
Expect basic, wooded sites at state parks and a very different experience in the urban options: paved sites, hookups, and city noise at Liberty Harbor and Floyd Bennett Field. Black bears inhabit Harriman and Bear Mountain, and deer ticks carrying Lyme disease are present, so proper food storage and insect repellent are important.
