Campgrounds near Long Hill
Long Hill sits in Trumbull, Connecticut, in the lower Naugatuck Valley within easy reach of both Long Island Sound and the state's western highlands. RV travelers use it as a base for exploring parks along the Housatonic River corridor and the wooded ridges north toward Litchfield County. Interstate 84 and Route 8 provide the main access routes to nearby state park campgrounds and private RV parks.
The closest state campground is Kettletown State Park, a 605-acre park on the eastern shore of Lake Zoar, with over six miles of trails, a shaded picnic area, and a lakeside campground. However, the Kettletown campground remains closed due to flood damage from the August 2024 rainfall event. Further north, Black Rock State Park offers 78 campsites, some wooded and some open, plus four rustic cabins within walking distance of the beach, fishing pond, recreation field, and hiking trails.
Private options fill in the gaps for RVers who want hookups. Gentile's Campground and Branch Brook Campground both sit in the hills northwest of Long Hill, while Totoket Valley RV Park offers a small full-hookup park closer to New Haven and the shoreline.
Things to do near Long Hill
Hiking and freshwater recreation drive most trip plans. Kettletown State Park has over six miles of trails traversing varied terrain, with scenic overlooks of Lake Zoar on the Housatonic River, though the campground itself remains closed and only the day-use Miller Trail and youth group area are open. Black Rock State Park is bisected by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association's Mattatuck Trail and has a network of intersecting footpaths, offering hikes from short strolls to all-day treks.
Anglers have solid options. Black Rock Pond is one of Connecticut's 13 designated trout parks, regularly restocked with brown and rainbow trout throughout spring and fall, and is family-friendly for even the youngest anglers. Branch Brook Campground has an on-site brook for casual fishing, and Gentile's Campground adds a pool, mini-golf, and courts for families with kids.

The Connecticut state park camping season is short. The Black Rock State Park campground opens in late May and closes in mid-October at noon, with cabins available Fridays and Saturdays in the early weeks and daily through the core summer stretch. After early September, standard campsites shift to walk-in registration Sunday through Thursday nights, with advance reservations still required for Friday and Saturday nights.
Kettletown's status has changed. The park sustained flood damage from an unprecedented heavy rainfall event in August 2024, and the campground and surrounding areas, including the Pomeraug, Crest, and Brook Trails, remain closed with no reopening date determined. Day-use areas, including the Miller Trail as well as the youth group campsites, remain open per scheduled park hours.
Private parks run longer. Branch Brook Campground typically operates from spring into late fall. Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest at all campgrounds within an hour of Long Hill, and shoulder-season trips in late spring and early fall see cooler nights and fewer bugs.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book near Long Hill
State park sites go through the Connecticut DEEP's official reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Booking well ahead is advisable, especially for holiday weekends and peak summer.
At Black Rock, after early September, standard campsites are available for walk-in registration Sunday through Thursday, with Friday and Saturday nights still requiring advance reservations. Private parks handle their own bookings: Branch Brook Campground, Gentile's Campground, and Totoket Valley RV Park all take reservations directly by phone or through their websites, and each keeps a mix of transient and seasonal renters, so calling ahead is recommended.
What to expect at Long Hill campgrounds
State park campgrounds in this region are rustic. Black Rock has bathhouses with showers and flush toilets and a dumping station, but electric and water hookups are not provided at sites. Pets and alcohol are prohibited in the campground. Maximum length of stay is fourteen consecutive days, after which all members of the camping party and equipment must leave the park for five days before returning.
Private parks offer more amenities, including full hookup sites with 30 or 50 amp service. To protect Connecticut's forests from destructive insect pests, bringing firewood into state campgrounds and state parks from other states is strictly prohibited. Black bears, deer, skunks, raccoons, and other wildlife share the region, so food, hygiene items, and trash should be stored in appropriate containers or in the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Long Hill, CT
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Long Hill, CT?
RV rental in Long Hill is one of the more affordable ways to explore southern Connecticut and the New England coast. On RVezy, travel trailers typically range from about $90 to $180 per night, campervans from $125 to $225, and Class C motorhomes from $175 to $300 per night, depending on size, age, and season. For a cheap RV rental in Long Hill, look at midweek dates, shoulder-season trips in May or late September, and travel trailers if you already have a tow vehicle. Many local hosts also bundle camp chairs, linens, and kitchen kits at no extra cost. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for summer Fairfield County weekends, when demand from nearby New York City families is highest.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Long%20Hill%2C%20ConnecticutWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Long Hill, Connecticut?
Great news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Long Hill. Connecticut does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, or campervans under 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. You must be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and you'll verify your ID right through the platform during checkout, no DMV visit required. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country's license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-timers are surprised how quick the whole process is, often under 10 minutes from booking to confirmation.
portal.ct.gov/dmv/licenses-permits-ids/get-a-cdlIs my RV rental in Long Hill, CT protected if something goes wrong?
Every RV rental in Long Hill booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you drive away. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, with multiple coverage tiers you select at checkout (guests choose the level, not hosts) so you can match the deductible and coverage to your trip. Roadside help is one phone call away for issues like a flat tire, dead battery, or lockout, whether you are near Long Hill or on a longer New England loop. It is the kind of safety net that turns first-time renters into repeat road trippers.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Long Hill RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), so you get consistent, transparent terms on every Long Hill RV rental. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, plus refund tiers based on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, you receive a refund or travel credit. You do not need to compare policies between listings, the same RVezy framework applies whether you are renting a campervan for a Mystic weekend or a Class C for a two-week New England loop. If your plans shift, message the host first, then process the change in your RVezy dashboard.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Long Hill?
Yes, finding a pet-friendly RV rental in Long Hill is easy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see listings where dogs are welcome, and message the host before booking to share your dog's size and breed. Connecticut has great spots to camp with pets: Wolf's Den Family Campground in East Haddam (about 55 miles east) allows leashed dogs throughout the park, and Kettletown State Park in Southbury permits pets at designated sites. Locally, you can walk leash-friendly trails at Old Mine Park in Trumbull, just minutes from Long Hill. Note that some Connecticut state park campgrounds, including Hammonasset, restrict pets in camping areas, so plan your overnights around the pet-welcoming options.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/pets-in-state-parks-and-forestsCan the RV be delivered to me in Long Hill, CT?
Yes, RV delivery in Long Hill is one of the most popular options, especially for first-time renters. Many area hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your campsite, driveway, or even a friend's house in Trumbull, Shelton, Bridgeport, or Stratford, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. This is a game-changer if you're nervous about towing a trailer through Merritt Parkway traffic or maneuvering a Class C into Kettletown State Park. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your destination, most charge a per-mile delivery fee that's well worth it. Pro tip: ask for delivery to your campground on Friday morning so you arrive to a fully set-up rig and start your weekend relaxing.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/camping-areas---ct-state-parks-and-forestsHow far can I travel on a Long Hill RV trip?

The location puts you in the middle of New England's best road trip routes: roughly 60 miles to New York City, 75 miles to the Rhode Island coast, 140 miles to Boston, 175 miles to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and around 290 miles to the Acadia National Park gateway region. Mileage policies are set by each host, with many Long Hill listings offering 100 to 150 free miles per day and some advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. Check the listing's mileage section before booking and message the host if you are planning a bigger loop. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each, so factor that into your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Long%20Hill%2C%20ConnecticutWhere are the best campgrounds near Long Hill, CT?
You have great choices for RV camping near Long Hill. Top picks include Kettletown State Park in Southbury (about 20 miles north, on Lake Zoar with electric hookups, dump station, and an RV length limit around 30 feet), Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison (about 45 miles east, Connecticut's largest shoreline campground with 500+ sites), Wolf's Den Family Campground in East Haddam (full hookups, pools, and pet-friendly), and Black Rock State Park in Watertown (great hiking and a swimming pond). For overnight parking, Connecticut generally prohibits sleeping in highway rest areas, so always have a reservation. Book Connecticut state park sites through the official CT DEEP reservation system.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/camping-areas---ct-state-parks-and-forestsWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Long Hill, CT?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Long Hill. June and early July bring warm days (highs around 80 F), green forests, and long daylight, perfect for shoreline trips. Late September through mid-October delivers fall foliage across the Litchfield Hills, Housatonic Valley, and nearby Berkshires, with crisp 55 F to 70 F days and cool sleeping weather. July and August are the busiest and most humid, so book early. Winter rentals (December through March) are limited because most Connecticut state park campgrounds close after mid-fall, but a few four-season private parks stay open. Leaf-peeping typically peaks around mid-October, plan your Long Hill RV trip then for unforgettable scenery.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving in the Long Hill area?
You've got this. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially around Long Hill. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, propane, water, electric, slide-outs, and dumping, and they share contact info so you can text questions mid-trip. For newcomers, smaller Class B campervans and Class C motorhomes (around 22 to 28 feet) handle much like a large van. Important: avoid the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) in your RV, it bans commercial vehicles, trailers, and most RVs, use I-95 or Route 8 instead. Practice a few right turns and a back-in at the host's location before you leave, and you'll feel confident within an hour.
portal.ct.gov/dotWhat if I break down during my Long Hill RV trip?
Take a deep breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat on Route 25, a dead battery at Kettletown State Park, or a lockout in downtown Mystic, help is one phone call away. The roadside team handles towing, tire service, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and lockouts across Connecticut and beyond. Your host is also a message away for quick questions about their specific rig, like resetting the inverter or restarting the fridge. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip through the Help Center. Save both numbers in your phone before you leave Long Hill, and you'll have backup the entire way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Long Hill RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Long Hill across state lines is one of the best parts of renting here, you're within easy reach of New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, all covered by your RVezy protection package by default. Popular cross-state routes include Long Hill to Cape Cod (about 165 miles), Long Hill to Acadia, Maine (about 380 miles), and Long Hill to the Adirondacks (about 230 miles). Heading to Canada? Many hosts allow it, just confirm with them before booking and bring your passport. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection package and insurance do not extend there. Message your host directly from the listing page to confirm cross-border plans.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much will fuel cost for my Long Hill RV trip?
Budgeting fuel for an RV rental in Connecticut is straightforward once you know the numbers. Regular gas in the Long Hill and Fairfield County area typically runs slightly above the national average, often $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon, with diesel about $0.30 to $0.60 higher. Realistic mileage by RV type: campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, travel trailers reduce your tow vehicle's MPG to around 10 to 14, and Class A motorhomes average 7 to 10 MPG. For a 300-mile weekend loop to the Berkshires in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: gas is usually cheaper just over the border in New York or off I-84 exits than in coastal Fairfield County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Long Hill?
Book early, Connecticut campgrounds fill up fast on summer weekends. For state parks like Kettletown, Hammonasset, and Housatonic Meadows, reservations open through the official CT DEEP reservation system, and the most popular sites for July and August often sell out soon after they open. Aim to book state park sites 3 to 6 months ahead for peak season, and 4 to 8 weeks ahead for shoulder season. Private parks like Wolf's Den or Lone Oak Campsites in East Canaan usually have more flexibility but still book solid for holiday weekends. Sunday through Thursday nights almost always have openings, and many Long Hill RV trip planners save by going midweek.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/make-a-camping-reservationWhat are local driving conditions like around Long Hill, CT?
Driving an RV around Long Hill is very manageable once you know two key things. First, avoid the Merritt Parkway (Route 15), which has low stone-arch bridges (some under 10 feet) and bans most RVs and trailers, use I-95, Route 8, or I-84 instead. Second, Fairfield County rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays) can be brutal on I-95 between Bridgeport and Stamford, so time your departure for late morning. Roads in northern Connecticut and the Litchfield Hills are scenic but winding, take it slow on Route 7 and Route 202. Winters can bring snow and ice from December to March; if you're renting in shoulder season, check the forecast. Otherwise, Connecticut's roads are well-maintained, well-signed, and RV-friendly.
portal.ct.gov/dot/state-highway-administration/state-highway-administration/merritt-parkwayWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Long Hill?

Hammonasset Beach State Park has 500+ sites, dump stations, restrooms with showers, and a camp store. For dumping and water fills between trips, Kettletown and Hammonasset both have dump stations for registered campers, and many Pilot/Flying J locations along I-84 offer paid dump access. Bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 15-amp adapter, you'll be ready for any site in southern New England.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/parks/hammonasset-beach-state-parkWhat equipment and features come with a typical Long Hill RV rental?

Seatbelts are provided for the listed sleeping capacity, confirm the seatbelt count matches your group before booking. Wi-Fi and TV vary by host: some include cellular hotspots, others provide a smart TV that works on campground Wi-Fi. Every listing on RVezy itemizes exactly what's included, and you can message the host with specific questions before you book your campervan rental Long Hill.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Long%20Hill%2C%20ConnecticutHow does payment and the security deposit work for a motorhome rental in Long Hill?
Payment for your motorhome rental in Long Hill is simple and secure, you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. The total includes the nightly rate, host-set fees (like cleaning and prep), the protection plan you choose, mileage if applicable, and applicable taxes. A refundable security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment and is held before pickup; amounts vary by RV class. As long as you return the rig in the condition you received it, with fuel and tanks per the host's instructions, the deposit is released after the trip. Do a video walkaround at pickup and drop-off with the host present, it protects everyone and keeps the deposit return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a family RV trip from Long Hill, CT a good idea for kids?
A family RV trip from Long Hill is one of the best ways to introduce kids to New England, and the logistics could not be easier. You're within an easy day's drive of beach camping at Hammonasset (lifeguarded swimming, the Meigs Point Nature Center), Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Aquarium (about 65 miles east), Lake Compounce amusement park in Bristol (about 35 miles north), and the Berkshires for hiking and waterfalls. Choose a Class C motorhome for built-in bunk beds, kid-friendly seatbelts, and a real bathroom on board. Many Long Hill hosts toss in board games, outdoor mats, and bikes. Pro tip: pick a campground with a pool or beach (Wolf's Den or Hammonasset) for the first trip, kids will be begging to do it again before you even unpack.
