Camping near Lordship, Connecticut
Lordship is a coastal neighborhood of Stratford on Connecticut's Long Island Sound, positioned between Bridgeport and New Haven and roughly an hour and a half by road from New York City. The area itself is residential, so most RV campers base their trip at state-run campgrounds in the surrounding region and use Lordship as a jumping-off point for the shoreline.
Inland options sit along the Housatonic River corridor. Kettletown State Park features Lake Zoar, the fifth largest freshwater body in Connecticut, created when the Stevenson Dam was built for hydroelectric power. Note that the Kettletown campground sustained flood damages from an unprecedented heavy rainfall event in August 2024 and will remain closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, though day-use areas including the Miller Trail remain open.
Across Long Island Sound, additional RV-friendly options include Totoket Valley RV Park on the Connecticut side and, on Long Island itself, Wildwood State Park, Heckscher State Park, and the ferry-access Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island.
Things to do around Lordship
Lordship sits on a peninsula bounded by Long Island Sound and the mouth of the Housatonic River, so beach walks, birding at Long Beach and Great Meadows Marsh, and coastal cycling are the everyday draws. Short drives reach downtown Stratford, Bridgeport's museums and ballpark, and New Haven's waterfront.
For day trips from an RV base, the Housatonic Valley offers hiking and paddling. Kettletown State Park has about six miles of trails in two loops plus a brookside path, with overlooks along the Miller and Crest Trails that provide views of Lake Zoar and the Housatonic River.
On Long Island, families combine beach time with easy trails. Heckscher State Park sits on the shore of Great South Bay with swimming, picnicking, kayaking, and paddleboarding, while Wildwood State Park offers beach access on Long Island Sound and marked hiking trails through coastal woodland.

The camping calendar in this region is short and clearly defined. Heckscher State Park campgrounds reopen from May 22 through September 6, with reservations through Reserve America. The Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island typically opens around Memorial Day weekend and operates through mid-October, though exact dates vary each year. Connecticut state park campgrounds generally run from early May through late September.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm, humid weather ideal for beach camping but also the highest demand, so booking months ahead is standard. Late spring and early fall offer cooler nights, lighter crowds, and better availability, plus fall color inland along the Housatonic.
Late summer and early fall also fall within the Atlantic hurricane season, and coastal Connecticut and Long Island occasionally see tropical storm impacts. Winter closes nearly all developed campgrounds in the region, though day-use areas at many state parks remain open for hiking and cross-country skiing.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book campgrounds near Lordship
Connecticut and New York state parks both use Reserve America. New York State Park campground reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to nine months in advance, and any reservation with departure dates outside the nine-month maximum window cannot be changed or cancelled until 18 days after it was made. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites only, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites.
Fire Island's Watch Hill is different. Watch Hill Family Campground reservations are not available on Recreation.gov; the campground is operated by concessioner LoveFINS, with booking through their site and access by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue. Reserve ferry passage separately from the campsite. Totoket Valley RV Park is privately operated, so book directly with the park.
What to expect on the ground
State park campgrounds in this region tend toward basic. Heckscher's campground accommodates tent campers and RVs on 67 sites along Great South Bay, with a 14-night maximum consecutive stay, restrooms, showers, and picnic tables. Some sites offer full hookups for RVs up to 50 feet, though many are non-electric, so expect to arrive with full fresh water tanks and use the dump station on the way out.
Rules are strict and enforced. Alcohol and pets are prohibited at Kettletown State Park, with a maximum of two vehicles per campsite. At Heckscher, only one vehicle is allowed at each campsite with additional vehicles parked in a designated area, and pets are not permitted at campsites or cottages.
Watch Hill requires planning around the ferry: gear moves by hand cart along boardwalks, and no vehicles are permitted on that section of Fire Island.
