Campgrounds near Mystic, Connecticut
Mystic sits on the southeastern Connecticut coast between the Thames and Pawcatuck rivers, roughly halfway between New London and Westerly, Rhode Island. The area is a compact base for RV travelers: I-95 runs through it, downtown Mystic and Mystic Seaport are within a few minutes' drive of most local campgrounds, and Rhode Island beaches, Foxwoods, and Mohegan Sun are all short trips away.
Most RV parks in the Mystic area are privately owned, family-oriented resorts rather than state or federal campgrounds. Sun Outdoors Mystic sits in Old Mystic and is one of the closer options to the village, offering full and partial hookup sites, rentals, and resort amenities. Mystic KOA Holiday, located just over the town line in North Stonington, is one of the few year-round properties in the region. Strawberry Park Campground and Hidden Acres Campground are both in Preston, and Frontier Family Camper Park rounds out the nearby options.
Together these parks give RV travelers a mix of wooded, riverside, and open-field sites within a short drive of the coast.
Things to do near Mystic
Mystic Seaport Museum and the Mystic Aquarium anchor the downtown area, and both are easy day trips from any of the nearby campgrounds. Olde Mistick Village adds shops, restaurants, and seasonal events, including a large holiday light display that runs from late fall through the end of December. Beaches at Watch Hill and along the Rhode Island shore are a short drive east.
On the campground side, Sun Outdoors Mystic offers a pool, mini-golf, and a game room. Mystic KOA Holiday features a jumping pillow, a pool, planned activities, and a seasonal holiday light show from late November through December. Strawberry Park Campground runs themed weekends and live music through the season, along with multiple pools and a splash pad. Hidden Acres Campground sits along the Quinebaug River and includes a pool, fishing, and family activities. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos are both within about thirty minutes' drive.

The core camping season in the Mystic area runs from spring through mid-fall. Most private campgrounds open in April or May and close in mid-October: Strawberry Park Campground operates roughly from April through Columbus Day weekend, and Hidden Acres Campground runs from May 1 through Columbus Day. Mystic KOA Holiday is the notable exception, staying open year-round and hosting a holiday light show from late November through the end of December.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring the warmest weather, the busiest downtown, and the highest demand for sites, so reservations should be locked in well in advance. Late spring and September offer milder temperatures and lighter crowds while most amenities are still running.
Winter camping is limited to the year-round properties, and travelers should expect cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced services. Hurricane and tropical storm remnants can affect the coast in late summer and early fall, so travelers should watch forecasts in August and September.

How to book a campground near Mystic
Nearly all campgrounds in the Mystic area are privately operated and take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Sun Outdoors Mystic and Strawberry Park Campground both list availability through their own booking platforms, and Mystic KOA Holiday uses the standard KOA reservation system online or by phone.
Summer weekends, holiday weekends, and themed events fill up months ahead. For July and August stays, and for any Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, or Columbus Day weekend, booking eight to twelve weeks out is realistic, and popular sites at Strawberry Park Campground and Hidden Acres Campground often go earlier. Cancellation policies vary by park, so review the terms before confirming.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the Mystic area lean toward wooded, gravel, or grass pads with picnic tables and fire rings. Full hookups are common at the larger resorts, though some properties use dump stations or on-request pump-out service rather than sewer at every site. A pressure regulator is worth packing.
Expect a family-heavy atmosphere in summer, with pools, playgrounds, and organized activities at most parks. Many campgrounds also have a significant number of seasonal residents, which keeps sites tidy but means transient spots can be limited on busy weekends.
Cell coverage is generally reliable, downtown Mystic is a short drive from most parks, and grocery stores and fuel are close to the I-95 corridor. Bring bug spray, layers for cool coastal evenings, and beach gear if a shoreline day is on the itinerary.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Mystic, CT
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Mystic, CT?
An RV rental in Mystic, CT typically runs $125 to $275 per night for travel trailers and campervans, with larger Class A and Class C motorhomes ranging from $250 to $450 per night during peak summer season. Because Mystic sits in a major New England tourist corridor between Mystic Seaport, the casinos, and Long Island Sound beaches, you'll find the sweet spot for value in May, early June, and September when nightly rates often drop 20 to 30 percent. To score a cheap RV rental in Mystic, filter by Instant Book, message hosts about weekly discounts, and consider a travel trailer if you have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: booking 8 to 12 weeks ahead for July and August locks in the best inventory before Mystic Seaport festival weekends sell out.
ctvisit.com/listings/mystic-seaport-museumWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Mystic, Connecticut?
Good news: a regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mystic for personal use. Connecticut law specifically exempts recreational vehicles in private use from commercial license requirements, so whether you book a campervan, Class C motorhome, or travel trailer, your everyday license works just fine. On RVezy, the only requirement is that you're 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and your ID gets verified right through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Grab an International Driving Permit from your local auto association before your trip. Most first-timers are surprised how simple the process really is, and your host walks you through everything at pickup.
portal.ct.gov/dmv/driver-services/driver-licenses-and-permits/get-a-new-driver-licenseIs my RV rental in Mystic protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Mystic includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 27 toward Mystic Seaport with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV and provides meaningful financial protection during your trip. At checkout, you choose from RVezy protection levels (Essential, Standard, or Premium) based on the coverage and deductible you want, so the decision is in your hands and not the host's. That means if you scrape a low branch at a state park or ding the awning at Williams Beach, you're covered under the plan you selected. It's one of the reasons first-time renters consistently say renting an RV in Mystic, CT felt easier than they expected.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Mystic RV trip plans change?
You can book your Mystic RV trip with confidence, because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation on the platform. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, and refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. Because cancellation terms are unified across RVezy and not displayed on individual listings, the process stays consistent and renter-friendly. If a nor'easter or tropical storm threatens the Long Island Sound coast the week of your trip, reach out to RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options. Book early and adjust later if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Mystic?
Absolutely, and Mystic is a fantastic dog destination. Many hosts on RVezy offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Mystic, and you can find them in seconds by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page. Once you arrive, take your pup to Haley Farm State Park in Groton for leashed walks, or hit Bluff Point Coastal Reserve just minutes from downtown. Heads up: Connecticut state park campgrounds generally restrict pets in camping areas, but Pachaug State Forest and many private campgrounds like Mystic KOA Holiday welcome them. Bring proof of rabies vaccination, a 7-foot or shorter leash, and pack waste bags. Your dog will love the salt air as much as you do.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/pet-policy-for-state-parks-and-forestsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or rental house in Mystic?
Yes, RV delivery in Mystic is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a stress-free trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many Mystic-area hosts offer delivery and setup, meaning they'll drop the RV at Mystic KOA Holiday in North Stonington, Sun Outdoors Mystic in Old Mystic, your family's rental cottage near Noank, or even a wedding venue near Mystic Seaport. The host levels it, hooks up water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric, and walks you through everything before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter when browsing listings to see hosts who offer this in your zip code. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location, with many offering flat rates within a 30-mile radius.
ctvisit.com/regions/mystic-countryHow far can I drive my RV rental from Mystic on a typical trip?
Mystic is one of the best launch points on the East Coast for an RV road trip, with incredible destinations within a 3-hour drive. Newport, Rhode Island is just 45 minutes east via I-95 and Route 138, while Cape Cod beaches sit about 2.5 hours northeast via the Bourne Bridge. Boston is roughly 95 miles north (under 2 hours), the White Mountains of New Hampshire are about 4 hours, and Acadia National Park in Maine makes a stunning 6-hour bucket-list haul. Hosts set their own mileage policies; many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras around $0.30 to $0.45 per mile, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Message the host to confirm before booking longer routes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mystic,%20ConnecticutWhere are the best campgrounds near Mystic, CT for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Mystic. Mystic KOA Holiday in North Stonington offers full hookups, two pools, and is just 10 minutes from Mystic Seaport. Sun Outdoors Mystic (formerly Seaport RV Resort) on Campground Road in Old Mystic features waterfront sites, mini golf, and a heated pool. Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme has 160 wooded sites near a half-mile crescent beach, while Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison boasts 552 grassy sites and Connecticut's longest public beach. For a quieter inland vibe, try Salem Farms Campground about 25 minutes north. Pro tip: shoreline state park sites fill up first; book through the Reserve America Connecticut portal as soon as your dates are set.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/campgrounds-locations-and-feesWhen is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Mystic?
The sweet spot for a Mystic RV trip is mid-May through late September, when daytime highs run 70 to 82 degrees and Long Island Sound water temps reach a swimmable 70 degrees by August. July is the warmest and sunniest month, but late May, early June, and September deliver near-perfect weather with smaller crowds and lower rates. Fall foliage peaks in mid-October, making for a gorgeous shoulder-season RV camping experience in Mystic with crisp 50s-to-60s daytime temps. Most local campgrounds operate May through October, though Mystic KOA Holiday stays open year-round if you want to catch the magical Lantern Light Village event at Mystic Seaport in December. Book summer weekends 2 to 3 months ahead for the best inventory.
weather.gov/box/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Mystic?
You'll do great, and first time renting an RV in Mystic is genuinely easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host provides a thorough orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, dumping tanks, and using the generator. Choose a Class B campervan or smaller Class C motorhome for your first trip; they handle much like a large van or U-Haul. Mystic's main roads (Route 1, Route 27, I-95) are RV-friendly with wide lanes, though avoid the narrow streets of downtown Mystic near the Bascule Bridge during peak summer afternoons. If driving still feels intimidating, book a host who offers delivery so the RV is set up and waiting when you arrive. You've got this.
portal.ct.gov/dmv/driver-services/driver-servicesWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Mystic trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 184 or a dead battery at Bluff Point gets resolved fast with one phone call. Help can reach you anywhere from downtown Mystic to remote stretches of Pachaug State Forest. Beyond roadside coverage, your host is your first call for quick fixes (the message thread stays open throughout your trip), and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your booking. Most issues are simple, like a tripped breaker or a finicky propane regulator, and a quick call resolves them. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup and head out worry-free.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Mystic RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and easy from Mystic since you're 10 minutes from the Rhode Island border and an hour from Massachusetts. Popular RV road trips from Mystic include Newport (45 min), Cape Cod (2.5 hrs), the Berkshires (2 hrs), and the Maine coast (3 to 6 hrs). Travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so message the host directly from the listing if you're planning a trip to Quebec or the Maritimes. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is never permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. For cross-border Canada trips, bring your passport and confirm coverage in writing with your host before crossing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Mystic RV trip?
Plan for 7 to 12 miles per gallon depending on the rig: campervans and small Class C motorhomes get 12 to 18 MPG, while larger Class A motorhomes average 7 to 10 MPG. Connecticut gas prices typically run slightly above the national average, with regular unleaded averaging around $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon and diesel a bit higher. For a typical 4-day Mystic RV trip with 300 miles of driving, budget $90 to $160 in fuel. Fill up at the Stop & Shop gas station on Route 1 or Cumberland Farms on Greenmanville Avenue before heading out, since prices climb closer to the Cape and the casinos. Pro tip: GasBuddy is your friend, and slower highway speeds (55 to 60 mph) noticeably stretch your tank.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Mystic?
For peak summer (July and August), book Mystic-area campgrounds 4 to 6 months ahead, especially for shoreline favorites like Rocky Neck State Park and Hammonasset Beach State Park, which open reservations 11 months out through Reserve America's Connecticut State Parks portal. Hammonasset has a 7-night minimum Sunday-to-Sunday at peak season, so plan accordingly. Private parks like Mystic KOA Holiday and Sun Outdoors Mystic also fill quickly for holiday weekends and Mystic Seaport festival dates. Shoulder season (May, September, October) is much more flexible, often bookable 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if your dream site is booked, use a cancellation alert service like Campnab; New England campers cancel often as forecasts shift.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/campground-reservation-service---ct-state-parks-and-forestsWhat are the driving conditions like for RVs around Mystic?
Mystic is one of the easier places on the Northeast coast to drive an RV. I-95 runs right through town with wide lanes and easy exits at 89, 90, and 91 for Mystic Seaport, the Aquarium, and downtown. Route 27, Route 1, and Route 184 are all RV-friendly. Two things to watch: the historic downtown area near the Mystic River Bascule Bridge has tight turns and limited parking, so park at the Aquarium lot or Olde Mistick Village and walk in. Also, summer beach traffic on Friday afternoons heading toward Rhode Island can crawl, so leave early or after 6 PM. Winter brings occasional nor'easters with snow and ice, so check forecasts November through March before driving.
portal.ct.gov/dotWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Mystic?
Most full-service campgrounds near Mystic offer 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups (full hookups) at private parks like Mystic KOA Holiday and Sun Outdoors Mystic, plus heated pools, laundry, Wi-Fi, and camp stores. Connecticut state parks like Rocky Neck and Hammonasset Beach do NOT offer individual RV hookups, but they provide dump stations, potable water fill-up, hot showers, and flush toilets. Maximum RV length at state park campgrounds is 35 feet, so check your rig before booking. For dumping tanks between stops, both Rocky Neck and Hammonasset have public dump stations, and most private parks let non-guests dump for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground, since fill stations get crowded on Sunday checkouts.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/general-camping-information---ct-state-parks-and-forestsWhat features and amenities come with most Mystic RV rentals?
Mystic RV rentals come surprisingly well equipped. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware; sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig; a bathroom with toilet and shower (in Class B, C, A, and most trailers); air conditioning and propane heat; and seatbelts for travel passengers. Most rentals include a TV and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots or generators for off-grid camping at spots like Bluff Point. Hosts often provide linens, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs, and even kayaks or bikes as add-ons, perfect for paddling the Mystic River. Check each listing's amenity list and message your host with specific questions before booking. Tip: a campervan rental in Mystic is ideal for couples; families usually love a Class C motorhome.
ctvisit.com/articles/great-outdoorsHow do pickup, dropoff, and mileage work for an RV rental in Mystic?
Pickup and dropoff in Mystic are flexible and host-driven. Most hosts schedule pickup between 12 and 4 PM and dropoff by 11 AM, with a 60 to 90-minute orientation included. Many hosts offer delivery to Mystic KOA, Sun Outdoors Mystic, Rocky Neck State Park, your Airbnb, or even Mystic Aquarium parking, especially helpful if you've flown into T.F. Green (PVD) in Providence (about 45 minutes away). Mileage policies vary by host: typically 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage at $0.30 to $0.45/mile, though some Mystic hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for an extra daily fee. Popular add-ons include generators, propane refills, camping chairs, linen kits, and bike racks. Always confirm pickup time and delivery location in your booking messages.
flypvd.com/How does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Mystic, CT?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, no cash or off-platform transfers to the host. A separate security deposit hold (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is placed on your card a few days before pickup and released after your trip once the host confirms there's no damage and the RV was returned clean with empty tanks. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and dump-tank instructions, and keep all communication inside the RVezy message thread. That way, your deposit comes back fast and your Mystic motorhome rental ends as smoothly as it started.
