Campgrounds near New London, Connecticut
New London sits on the Thames River estuary along Connecticut's southeast shoreline, roughly halfway between New York City and Boston along the I-95 corridor. The area gives RV travelers quick access to Long Island Sound beaches, the historic seaport of Mystic, and the submarine museum in Groton, with campgrounds clustered within a short drive of downtown.
Options range from state-run shoreline camping to full-hookup private parks. Rocky Neck State Park offers shoreline camping with 160 wooded and open grassy sites and three rustic cabins divided into five loops: the Heron, Egret, Crane, Osprey, and Seagull. Private parks include Aces High RV Park, Sun Outdoors Mystic, Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA, and Pequot Ledge Campgrounds, each catering to travelers who want hookups, pools, and family amenities.
Because much of the region's camping supply is seasonal and shoreline-focused, weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book out early. Travelers with flexible dates find the widest choice in late spring and early fall, when weather stays comfortable and reservation pressure eases.
Things to do around New London
The waterfront is the anchor. Families use New London as a base for the Mystic Aquarium, Mystic Seaport Museum, and the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, home of the USS Nautilus. Ferries from downtown run to Block Island, Fishers Island, and Long Island's Orient Point, which makes day trips easy without moving the RV.
Beach access defines summer plans. Rocky Neck's beach is a half-mile crescent of soft, white sand, and because Long Island and Fishers Island act as a natural breakwater, the waves are generally tame with crystal waters lapping the shore. Ocean Beach Park in New London adds a boardwalk, pool, and mini golf.
Inland, Harkness Memorial State Park, the Connecticut College Arboretum, and the Niantic Bay Boardwalk fill quieter days. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun sit about twenty minutes north for evening dining and entertainment.

The camping season on the Connecticut shoreline is short and clearly defined. State-park campgrounds typically open in mid-May and close in late September, with Rocky Neck following that pattern. Private parks stretch the window slightly on either side, with most Mystic-area operators running from April or May through October.
July and August bring warm, humid weather, packed beaches, and peak reservation demand. Weekends around Independence Day and the Sailfest festival in New London fill months out. June and early September usually deliver similar temperatures with far more site availability.
Late fall through winter, most shoreline campgrounds close. Coastal storms and nor'easters can bring wind, heavy rain, and occasional snow from November through March. Travelers arriving in the shoulder season should confirm the campground is still open and check for reduced services such as closed pools or limited store hours.

How to book campgrounds near New London
Reservation systems split by operator. Campsite reservations at Rocky Neck State Park are handled through ReserveAmerica, using a toll-free number and online system. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to eleven months in advance. That eleven-month window matters: popular loops and waterfront-adjacent sites are often claimed the day they open.
Private parks such as Aces High RV Park, Sun Outdoors Mystic, Niantic/I-95 Exit 72 KOA, and Pequot Ledge Campgrounds book directly through their own websites or brand portals, with holiday weekends often carrying two- or three-night minimums.
For summer weekends, target reservations six to eight weeks out at private parks and closer to eleven months out for state park sites. Midweek arrivals see far more flexibility.
What to expect on-site
Hookups vary sharply by campground type. State-park sites at Rocky Neck are rustic: over 160 wooded and open campsites accommodate tents and RVs, each with a picnic table and fire ring, but there are no utility hookups, though a dump station is available on site. Private parks fill the gap. The Niantic KOA offers 50/30-amp full-hookup back-in sites with level crushed-stone driveways that accommodate RVs and trailers up to about 60 feet.
Expect wooded lots with mixed sun and shade, coastal humidity, and mosquitoes near marsh edges in summer. Cell service is generally strong along the I-95 corridor.
Checkout at Rocky Neck is noon for campsites and 11:00 a.m. for rustic cabins. Firewood rules are strict statewide to prevent pest spread, so plan to buy locally rather than bringing wood in.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20London%2C%20ConnecticutDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New London, CT?
Good news: for almost every RV rental in New London, your regular driver's license is all you need. Connecticut only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for single vehicles over 26,000 pounds, and the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers most guests pick on RVezy fall well under that limit. You'll just need to be an approved driver (generally 25 or older) with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID in the app before pickup. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home license and you're ready to roll toward Mystic, Niantic, or the Connecticut shoreline.

RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a short money-back grace period right after you book so you have time to confirm the details. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs near Ocean Beach Park, then finalize your plans with confidence.

portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/parks/rocky-neck-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in New London?

June through August brings warm 75 to 85°F days perfect for Ocean Beach Park, Sail Fest in mid-July, and ferry trips to Block Island from the State Pier. September and early October are arguably the sweet spot: cool 60 to 70°F days, smaller crowds, and stunning foliage starting in the inland hills around Devil's Hopyard State Park. May is great for shoulder-season pricing, while winter rentals are rare since most campgrounds close by late October. Pro tip: book a fall foliage week and combine it with a Mystic Seaport visit for a quintessential New England RV trip.
weather.gov/box/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and New London is a wonderful place for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the propane and water systems, so you're not left guessing. Many first-timers choose a camper van or small Class C, which drive much like a large truck and handle local roads like Route 1 and I-95 with ease. If city driving worries you, request delivery straight to your campground. Pro tip: plan a short shakedown drive to Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford on day one to practice parking and get comfortable before heading farther.

rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my RV rental from New London into other states or Canada?

You can freely cross into Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, all of which are within easy reach thanks to I-95 and I-395. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval since insurance coverage extends there in many cases, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection package doesn't extend there. Popular cross-border routes from New London include Newport, RI (45 minutes), Boston (100 miles), and the White Mountains (220 miles). Pro tip: confirm any out-of-state plans in writing through the RVezy chat before pickup.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel and gas in New London?
Fuel is one of the most predictable parts of your budget for a New London RV trip. Connecticut gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG) while travel trailers towed by a truck average 10 to 14 MPG. Camper vans are the most efficient, often hitting 18 to 22 MPG. For a typical 4-night loop covering 300 miles, expect $120 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the bigger stations along Route 32 in Norwich or off I-95 Exit 74 before heading toward Mystic, since prices in the smaller shoreline towns can run higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New London?
For the best campgrounds near New London, earlier is always better. Rocky Neck State Park opens reservations 11 months in advance through Reserve America and waterfront sites typically sell out for July and August within days of opening. Private parks like Mystic KOA and Strawberry Park Resort fill up 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, especially around Sail Fest and the Fourth of July. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, you can usually find a spot 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if your dates are locked but a park shows full, set a cancellation alert and check Sunday evenings, when last-minute openings often appear.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/campground-reservation-service---ct-state-parks-and-forestsWhat are the driving conditions like around New London?
Driving an RV in New London is very manageable once you know the local quirks. I-95 and I-395 are the main routes and handle large rigs easily, though traffic backs up Friday afternoons heading toward Mystic and Sundays returning west. The Gold Star Memorial Bridge over the Thames River is wide and RV-friendly, but downtown New London has narrow one-way streets best avoided in larger Class A motorhomes, so consider RV delivery instead. Watch for low-clearance railroad underpasses on local routes near the shoreline. Winters can bring snow and ice from December through March, which is part of why most RV rentals operate April through October. Pro tip: use Route 1 for a scenic, low-stress coastal drive.
portal.ct.gov/dot/travel/travel-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near New London?
Most campgrounds near New London are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Private parks like Mystic KOA, Aces High RV Park, and Sun Outdoors Mystic offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, laundry, and camp stores. State parks like Rocky Neck offer a different vibe: no individual hookups, but flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, potable water taps, and direct beach access. Free dump stations are also available at several Connecticut DEEP parks. Pro tip: if you're staying at Rocky Neck, fill your fresh water tank before arrival and plan to dump on your way out, since hoses can't be left connected to the public taps per park rules.

You'll find that most RVs on RVezy come fully ready for a comfortable Connecticut shoreline trip. Standard features typically include a queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with air conditioning and heat, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many include a TV, awning, outdoor chairs, and Bluetooth audio. Larger Class C motorhomes and travel trailers often add bunk beds, perfect for a family RV trip New London weekend at Rocky Neck. Some hosts include generators, Wi-Fi hotspots, or solar setups, while basics like linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are commonly bundled in. Check each listing's amenities list to match the rig to your trip style.
gorving.com/tips-inspiration/beginners/types-rvsWhat add-ons and options can I expect when I rent an RV in New London, CT?
RVezy hosts in New London offer flexible add-ons to make your trip easier. Popular options include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, outdoor grills, generators, and propane refills. Many hosts offer RV delivery and setup priced per mile from their location, and some include unlimited mileage as an upgrade. Pickup and drop-off are usually scheduled directly with the host at their home or at your campground. Standard mileage caps commonly run 100 to 150 free miles per night, with a small per-mile fee after that. Pro tip: if it's your first time, bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit so you arrive at Rocky Neck or Mystic KOA to a fully ready RV.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20London%2C%20ConnecticutHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly when you book, never in cash to the host. Your trip total includes the nightly rate, any add-ons you selected, taxes, and the protection plan fee. A security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip ends, assuming no damage. To keep things smooth, take time-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, return it at the agreed fuel level, and dump the tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: keep all communication and receipts inside the RVezy app for the smoothest deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I legally park an RV overnight in New London if I'm not at a campground?
For overnight stops outside campgrounds, you have a few solid options around New London. Connecticut does not have statewide rules against overnight parking at highway rest areas and service plazas along I-95 and I-395, making them suitable for short rest stops in your RV (though camping outside the vehicle isn't allowed). Some Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations in nearby Waterford and Lisbon permit overnight RV parking with manager approval, so always call ahead. City streets in downtown New London are not appropriate for overnight RV stays. Pro tip: for the best experience, book a campsite at Rocky Neck State Park, Aces High RV Park, or Mystic KOA, all within 15 miles, and skip the parking-lot stress entirely.
