Campgrounds and RV parks near Old Greenwich, CT

Water recreation is the region's main draw. Heckscher State Park offers windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, along with bay swimming at West Beach and boat launches on the Great South Bay. At Beaver Pond Campground, campers have walking access to Lake Welch beach, plus hiking on the surrounding Harriman trail network and connections to portions of the Appalachian Trail. Inland parks focus on lakes, ponds and forest trails. Kettletown State Park features several miles of hiking trails with scenic overlooks of Lake Zoar, and Pelton Pond at Fahnestock connects to a large trail system with a swimming beach and boat rentals on the pond itself. At Floyd Bennett Field, campers can bike the old runways, tour historic hangars, and reach the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge; public bus service links the site to the subway for access into the New York City core.

The camping season around Old Greenwich is short and clearly defined. New York state park campgrounds run late spring through early fall: Heckscher's campgrounds reopen for the 2026 season on May 22 and close September 6, and Beaver Pond and Fahnestock's Pelton Pond loops typically operate from mid-spring through mid-fall. Connecticut's season is similar. The 2026 season at Connecticut state park campgrounds opens Friday, May 1 and closes Wednesday, September 30 at noon. However, travelers targeting Kettletown must plan elsewhere: the Kettletown State Park Campground will remain closed for the 2026-2027 seasons due to flood damages sustained during an unprecedented heavy rainfall event in August 2024. Day-use trails and the youth group camping area at Kettletown remain open, but the main campground and access bridge are out of service, and CT DEEP suggests Lake Waramaug State Park and Black Rock State Park as alternatives. Floyd Bennett Field's Camp Gateway has historically extended shoulder-season options closer to New York City, but recent seasons have seen closures, so travelers should confirm status on Recreation.gov before planning.

None of the closest campgrounds offer full hookups, so RV renters should arrive with fresh water and empty tanks. Heckscher provides restrooms, showers, a dump station, and picnic tables at each site. Beaver Pond offers sites for up to two tents and six persons, with select sites accommodating a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long; each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, and shared full-service bathrooms are centrally located, plus a dump station on site. Rig-size limits matter. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock accepts larger rigs, while Beaver Pond caps trailers and RVs at 30 feet. Rules also vary: alcoholic beverages may not be possessed with intent to consume, and pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch. Black bears inhabit the Harriman and Bear Mountain area, so food storage guidelines apply. At Floyd Bennett Field, expect an urban setting with paved surfaces, a dump station, and no hookups.
