Old Mystic camping overview
Old Mystic sits in southeastern Connecticut, a short drive from the Mystic River, coastal beaches, and the Rhode Island line. The area works well as an RV base for families exploring Mystic Seaport, the Mystic Aquarium, Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, and the beaches around Stonington and Watch Hill. Interstate 95 and Route 27 provide direct access, so larger rigs can reach most private parks without navigating tight village streets.
Private campgrounds cluster within a ten-mile radius. Sun Outdoors Mystic sits on Camp Ground Road in Old Mystic itself, while Mystic KOA Holiday operates just north in North Stonington. Strawberry Park Campground in Preston and Hidden Acres Campground round out the resort-style options, and each offers full hookups, pools, and family programming.
For a more rustic, forested stay, Mount Misery in Pachaug State Forest lies inland near Voluntown. It trades hookups and amenities for wooded sites, hiking trails, and quiet.
Things to do near Old Mystic
Downtown Mystic anchors most itineraries. Mystic Seaport Museum offers hands-on tall-ship experiences, and Mystic Aquarium is a reliable rainy-day option for families. Olde Mistick Village hosts seasonal shopping events and a large holiday light display in winter.
Outdoor time is easy to fill. Pachaug State Forest has trails to the Mount Misery overlook at 441 feet and the Rhododendron Sanctuary, a short scenic walk through an unusual ecological area rare in New England. Green Fall Pond and Beachdale Pond allow paddling and small motorboats at low speed. Ocean beaches sit within a short drive along the Connecticut and Rhode Island shore.
Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun are both under thirty minutes away and add concerts, dining, and indoor entertainment to a trip.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private campgrounds run full activity calendars and coastal attractions operate on extended hours. Summer weekends book heavily at Sun Outdoors Mystic, Mystic KOA Holiday, and Strawberry Park Campground, so reserving weeks or months ahead is common. July and August bring the warmest water and the busiest downtown Mystic foot traffic.
Shoulder seasons work well for RV travelers who want lower demand. Late spring brings mild days and blooming rhododendrons in Pachaug. Fall delivers reliable foliage through October, and many private parks stay open into mid-October. Strawberry Park runs a full season from May through closing weekend in mid-October, and Mount Misery in Pachaug State Forest operates from April through October.
Winter camping is limited. Mystic KOA Holiday hosts a holiday light show in late November and December, but most other area parks close for the cold months.

How to book a campsite near Old Mystic
Private parks handle their own reservations. Sun Outdoors Mystic, Mystic KOA Holiday, Strawberry Park Campground, and Hidden Acres Campground each accept bookings through their own websites or by phone, and popular summer weekends often sell out well in advance. Sun Outdoors Mystic runs its season from mid-April through mid-October.
Mount Misery in Pachaug State Forest requires reservations through ReserveAmerica, with no walk-ins allowed. Reservations are accepted up to eleven months in advance until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival, and a two-night minimum applies to advance bookings, with single-night stays allowed within three days of arrival. For holiday weekends and foliage weekends in October, booking as far ahead as possible is the safest approach.
What to expect on the ground
Private resorts in the Old Mystic area lean family-oriented. Expect pools, mini-golf, pickleball or bocce courts, playgrounds, planned activities, and mixes of full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and park models. Sites are generally back-in on gravel, with picnic tables and fire rings. Some sites are configured as buddy sites with patios facing each other for groups traveling together.
Mount Misery is a different experience. The campground offers 22 sites with water, fireplaces, and pit toilets, and the campgrounds are considered rustic with no flush toilets or showers, and cell phone service is extremely limited within the forest. Alcohol is prohibited within Pachaug State Forest and the campgrounds, and firewood cannot be brought in from out of state due to pest quarantines. Up to two pets per campsite are allowed at Mount Misery, and most private parks in the area also welcome leashed dogs.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Old Mystic, CT?
RV rental in Old Mystic is often more affordable than booking hotels in nearby Mystic during peak summer. On RVezy, travel trailers in the area typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans around $125 to $225, and Class C motorhomes around $175 to $325, depending on age, size, and amenities. Hosts set their own pricing, so you can filter by price range to find a cheap RV rental in Old Mystic that still fits the whole family. Pro tip: book midweek in May, June, September, or early October and you will often save 20 to 30 percent versus July and August, when Mystic Seaport and the Aquarium pull peak crowds.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Old%20Mystic%2C%20ConnecticutDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Connecticut?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Old Mystic. Connecticut does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or towable trailers available on RVezy, including Class A, Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and you will confirm your ID directly through the RVezy platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in, and you are set for your Old Mystic RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Old Mystic?
Every RVezy booking in Old Mystic includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road to Mystic Seaport or Foxwoods feeling covered. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial peace of mind for first-time renters and seasoned road-trippers alike. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully when you book so you can match protection to your route, whether you are sticking around southeastern Connecticut or heading up the coast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Old Mystic plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental (not individual hosts), and it includes a full money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, the refund you receive depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. You will see the specific cancellation terms on the RVezy website before checkout. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or offers travel credits so your trip is protected. Pro tip: book early for July and August (peak Mystic Seaport season) to secure the best selection while still keeping flexibility.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Old Mystic?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Old Mystic is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see listings from hosts who welcome dogs, with any cleaning fee or pet rules stated upfront. Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: Bluff Point State Park in nearby Groton has miles of leashed dog trails along Long Island Sound, Haley Farm State Park connects via a quiet rail trail, and downtown Mystic has several dog-friendly patios along the riverwalk. Pro tip: pack a towel for sandy paws after Bluff Point, and message the host in advance if you are traveling with more than one pet.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/parks/bluff-point-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Old Mystic?
Yes, RV delivery in Old Mystic is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campsite at Seaport RV Resort, Highland Orchards in North Stonington, or Hopeville Pond State Park, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero stress about backing a 30-foot trailer into a wooded site. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it, then message them with your campground name and dates. Pro tip: delivery fees are usually based on distance, so booking a host close to Old Mystic keeps costs down.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Old%20Mystic%2C%20ConnecticutHow many miles can I drive on an Old Mystic RV rental?
Mileage on your Old Mystic RV trip is flexible. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and you will see it clearly on the listing before you book: some include a generous daily allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles per day), while others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great for longer road trips. For reference, Boston is about 90 miles north, Newport, Rhode Island is roughly 45 miles east, New York City is 130 miles southwest, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire are around 220 miles north. Pro tip: if you plan to loop through Cape Cod or up to Acadia, filter for unlimited mileage listings to keep your budget predictable.

Seaport Campground in Old Mystic offers full hookups, a pool, and easy access to the village. Highland Orchards Resort Park in North Stonington offers wooded sites, a pond, and family activities. Hopeville Pond State Park in Griswold (about 20 miles north) has rustic state-park sites along a quiet lake. Mystic KOA Holiday in North Stonington rounds out the list with full amenities and resort-style features. Pro tip: for summer weekends, book 3 to 6 months ahead; these campgrounds fill quickly once Mystic Seaport's summer programming kicks off.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/camping-in-connecticut-state-parks-and-forestsWhen is the best time of year for an Old Mystic RV trip?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Old Mystic is mid-May through mid-October, with daytime highs ranging from the upper 60s in spring and fall to the low 80s in July and August. June and September are the locals' favorite shoulder months: warm enough for the beach at Williams Beach or Esker Point, but without the peak-summer crowds at Mystic Seaport. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid to late October along the Connecticut coast, painting Pequotsepos and Bluff Point in reds and golds. Pro tip: visit during the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival in mid-August or the WoodenBoat Show in late June for a quintessential coastal Connecticut experience.
weather.gov/box/I have never rented an RV before. Is Old Mystic a good place to start?
Old Mystic is a fantastic spot for first time renting an RV. The roads around Mystic, Stonington, and Groton are mostly two-lane, well-maintained, and free of mountain passes, and most local campgrounds have pull-through sites that do not require backing in. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering the propane, water, electrical, and slide-out systems before you drive off. You can also message the host with questions before you book, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer for your first time, as they are easier to maneuver around downtown Mystic's narrow streets.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Old%20Mystic%2C%20ConnecticutWhat happens if I get a flat tire or break down on my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Old Mystic includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes sideways on I-95 between Mystic and New London, or on Route 27 heading to Mystic Seaport, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also just a message away for quick troubleshooting, since they know their RV better than anyone. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the pickup, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Old Mystic RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome, and an RV road trip from Old Mystic is one of the best ways to see New England. Popular routes include the Rhode Island coast to Newport (45 miles), Cape Cod (110 miles), Boston and the North Shore (90 miles), the Berkshires (110 miles), and the White Mountains (220 miles). Crossing into Canada (Quebec or the Maritimes) may be allowed depending on the specific host and protection coverage, so message the listing owner before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: for a classic loop, head from Old Mystic to Newport, up to Cape Cod, and back through Providence over four or five days.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and budget should I plan for?
Realistic fuel planning makes your Old Mystic RV trip more enjoyable. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, and a midsize truck towing a travel trailer about 9 to 12 MPG. Connecticut gas prices tend to run slightly above the national average, so check current rates when planning. A weekend loop from Old Mystic to Newport and back (roughly 100 miles round trip) in a Class C will use about 10 gallons. Pro tip: fill up just over the Rhode Island line where fuel is often a bit cheaper, and avoid the pricier I-95 service plaza pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Old Mystic?
For summer weekends in Old Mystic, book your campground 3 to 6 months in advance, especially for July, August, and any weekend tied to Mystic Seaport events or the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival. Connecticut state parks like Hopeville Pond and Rocky Neck use the Reserve America system and typically open reservations several months ahead, which is great for July 4th and Labor Day. Private parks like Seaport Campground, Mystic KOA, and Highland Orchards take direct bookings on their own websites. Pro tip: midweek stays (Sunday through Thursday) often have availability even in peak summer, and rates are noticeably lower at most local campgrounds.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/reservations-and-camping-feesWhat are the driving conditions like around Old Mystic?
Driving in and around Old Mystic is refreshingly manageable for RVs. The main routes (I-95, Route 1, Route 27, and Route 184) are well-paved and mostly flat, with no steep grades. The main thing to watch is the historic downtown Mystic core near the Bascule Bridge, where streets get narrow and parking is tight in summer; in a larger motorhome, it is easier to park at Olde Mistick Village or your campground and walk or rideshare in. I-95 traffic can back up on Friday evenings heading north and Sunday afternoons heading south during summer. Pro tip: time your arrival before noon on Friday or after 7 p.m. to skip the worst of the shoreline traffic.
portal.ct.gov/dotWhat hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Old Mystic offer?
Most private campgrounds near Old Mystic offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer) at the majority of their sites, plus dump stations, potable water fills, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Seaport Campground and Mystic KOA both have pools, playgrounds, and propane refills on site. Connecticut state parks like Hopeville Pond offer more rustic camping with potable water and a dump station but no individual sewer or electric hookups at sites. If you need to dump or refill mid-trip, Mystic KOA in North Stonington offers dump services to non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: ask your host whether the RV has a built-in fresh water tank that you can top up, which is handy at state parks without site hookups.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/camping-in-connecticut-state-parks-and-forestsWhat features and amenities come with the RVs in Old Mystic?
Local rentals are surprisingly well-equipped. A typical motorhome rental in Old Mystic includes a queen bed, kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, a furnace, and a dinette that converts to extra sleeping space. Many Class C motorhomes sleep 4 to 7 with bunkbeds or cabover beds, and most have seatbelts for traveling passengers (check the listing to confirm the count). TVs, outdoor speakers, generators, and solar panels are common on newer listings. Wi-Fi is sometimes included, but cell signal along coastal Connecticut is strong, so a phone hotspot works well. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count to match the RV to your group size.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Old%20Mystic%2C%20ConnecticutWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts offer for an Old Mystic RV rental?
Most hosts offering campervan rental or motorhome rental in Old Mystic provide handy add-ons that make your trip easier: linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, bikes, kayaks, generators, and even pre-stocked firewood. Some listings offer Instant Book for faster confirmation, while others prefer to chat first; both work great. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meeting point near Old Mystic, with delivery available for an additional fee. Mileage policies vary by host, so check the listing for daily allowances or unlimited options. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you are heading to a state park without electric hookups, since it keeps the AC running on hot July nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Old%20Mystic%2C%20ConnecticutHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through RVezy with a major credit card when you book, and funds are processed according to RVezy's payment schedule, which protects both you and the host. A security deposit is placed as a hold on your card (separate from your booking payment) before pickup; the exact amount is shown on the listing. As long as you return the RV on time, clean, with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after the trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff to make any deposit questions quick and painless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Old Mystic a good base for a family RV trip?
Old Mystic is one of the most family-friendly RV bases in the Northeast. Within a short drive of most local campgrounds, kids can meet beluga whales at Mystic Aquarium, climb aboard 19th-century ships at Mystic Seaport Museum, hit the beach at Williams Beach Park, hike easy trails at Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, and ride the carousel at Olde Mistick Village. A family RV trip in Old Mystic also pairs perfectly with a day in Newport or a Cape Cod beach run. Pro tip: pick up a Mystic Aquarium and Seaport combo ticket online before you arrive, since it saves money and skips the busiest ticket lines on July and August mornings.
