Campgrounds near Rock Ridge, Connecticut
Rock Ridge sits in the Greenwich area of Fairfield County, close to the New York state line and within easy driving range of two major state park systems. RV renters typically look north into the Hudson Highlands and west across the Hudson River for public campgrounds, since Connecticut's nearest state park camping is farther east.
The closest options span a wide mix of styles. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park offers wooded sites in the Hudson Highlands with picnic tables, fire rings, and flip-top grills, though the main campground is closed for the 2026 season during construction of a new bathhouse. Beaver Pond Campground sits within Harriman State Park in Rockland County, adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area, with select sites able to accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet in length.
Closer to the city, Floyd Bennett Field at Gateway National Recreational Area offers urban-adjacent camping on former airfield grounds, while Liberty Harbor RV Park provides a full-hookup base with Manhattan skyline access. For families wanting lake swimming without leaving the region, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc rounds out the nearby private options.
Things to do near Rock Ridge
Hiking and paddling anchor most trips. Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park offers boating, hunting, fishing, and birding, with Canopus Lake as the centerpiece. Fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in the park's four ponds is productive for bass, pickerel, perch, and brook and rainbow trout, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rental.
Harriman State Park covers roughly 48,000 acres with more than 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes, and multiple swimming beaches. From Beaver Pond Campground, the Lake Welch swimming beach is a short walk, and portions of the Appalachian Trail run through the park.
Day trips from Rock Ridge also reach the Hudson River waterfront, historic sites near Bear Mountain, and beaches along the Long Island Sound coastline.

The camping season in this region is tightly compressed. Beaver Pond Campground typically operates from spring through late October, with reservations opening on a 9-month rolling window. Late spring through mid-fall is the peak booking window, when weekend sites at Harriman fill quickly given the park's proximity to New York City.
Summer brings warm, humid weather and swimming beaches at capacity. At Fahnestock, Canopus Lake Beach and boat rentals open weekends and holidays only from late May through mid-June, then seven days a week from late June through Labor Day. Fall delivers reliable foliage across the Hudson Highlands from late September into mid-October, which is also a strong booking window for weekends.
Winter shuts most public campgrounds in the region. The main Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season for construction of a new bathhouse, though the Group Wilderness Campground remains open by phone reservation. RV renters should confirm current-year status directly with each park before locking in dates.
How to book campgrounds near Rock Ridge
New York state parks use a centralized reservation system. Camping reservations at Beaver Pond can be made up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica online or by calling 1-800-456-2267. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Because Harriman is roughly an hour from New York City and a favored weekend getaway, weekend bookings should be secured as far in advance as possible. Fahnestock's Group Wilderness Campground is booked by calling the park office directly at 845-225-7207.
For federal sites like Floyd Bennett Field, use Recreation.gov. Private options such as Liberty Harbor RV Park and Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc take reservations directly through their own websites, often with shorter lead times but limited RV capacity.
What to expect
Sites in this region skew rustic. Beaver Pond offers shared full-service bathrooms centrally located, showers, laundry, and a dumping station, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers. Sites accommodate up to two tents and six persons, and select sites fit a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long. Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite.
Terrain is rocky and wooded, so leveling blocks and a longer power cord help. Black bears inhabit Harriman and Bear Mountain, so food should be hung or stored in a bear canister, and insect repellent is recommended to guard against deer ticks that carry Lyme disease.
City-adjacent parks like Liberty Harbor cater to bigger rigs with full hookups but trade nature for pavement and transit access.
