Camping near Salmon Brook, Connecticut
Salmon Brook is a census-designated place within the town of Granby in north-central Connecticut, close to the Massachusetts border and roughly a half hour north of Hartford. The area sits at the edge of the Farmington River watershed, with easy access to state forests on both sides of the state line. RV renters use it as a base for the lower Berkshires foothills, the West Branch Farmington River, and attractions such as Bradley International Airport and Six Flags New England.
Camping options within a short drive include private, family-oriented parks and rustic state-forest campgrounds. Southwick Acres Campgrounds and Sodom Mountain Campground sit just over the line in Southwick, Massachusetts. Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park is in Granville, Massachusetts, with a larger footprint and full amenities. Granville State Forest and American Legion State Forest offer wooded, low-density state-run sites for renters who want quieter nights near the river.
Most trips here mix RV-park comforts with day trips to state forests, rivers, and small New England towns.
Things to do near Salmon Brook
The West Branch of the Farmington River is the region's main draw. It is designated a Wild and Scenic River by the National Park Service and holds cold-water trout year-round, thanks to bottom releases from the upstream reservoir. Fly fishing, tubing, and paddling are common along the corridor between American Legion State Forest and Peoples State Forest.
Hikers can pick up the Henry Buck Trail in American Legion State Forest, which climbs through the forest past the ruins of an old mill and up rocky cliffs. Granville State Forest offers quieter walks along the Hubbard River and its cascades.
Families with an RV often build trips around Six Flags New England in Agawam, the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, and the New England Air Museum near Bradley Airport. Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park adds on-site pools, mini golf, and organized activities for kids.

Camping in this area is a warm-season activity. American Legion State Forest's Austin F. Hawes campground runs from mid-April through Columbus Day, and water is typically not available at the sites until early to mid May, with portable toilets provided during the early season. Granville State Forest operates seven days a week only from late June onward, with reservations required through the Massachusetts DCR system. Both close for the winter.
Summer weekends from late June through Labor Day are the busiest window. Holiday weekends at the private parks often require multi-night minimums, and seasonal sites at Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park book out well in advance. Black bears visit Granville State Forest, and all food, coolers, and cooking supplies must be stored in the provided lockers rather than in tents or campers.
Fall brings cool nights and strong foliage color, especially along the Farmington River corridor. Winter closes state-forest campgrounds; only limited private options stay open.

We had a wonderful experience taking Sassy to a bluegrass festival. Everything worked great and it was comforting to have a cool and relaxing space of our own for the weekend.
Jonathan C. - Aug 2026
Far and away a better experience than we could have hoped for. Sassy was the PERFECT RV for us. Very clean, adequate space (2 adults and a dog), well stocked with useful items and just all around fantastic. We traveled from CT to West Virginia, the trip just wouldn't have been the same without such comfortable accommodations. The couple was informative and incredibly flexible and accommodating with our unique schedule. We truly cannot say enough good things about our experience. We're already beginning to plan our next trip with Sassy. Thanks so much!!

How to book campgrounds in the area
State-forest sites use official reservation systems. American Legion State Forest and other Connecticut state campgrounds are booked through ReserveAmerica, with reservations available up to eleven months in advance and required at least one day ahead of arrival. Granville State Forest in Massachusetts is booked through the Massachusetts DCR portal on ReserveAmerica, with a maximum booking window of four months.
Private parks such as Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park, Sodom Mountain Campground, and Southwick Acres Campgrounds take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends typically require multi-night minimums paid in advance.
Massachusetts DCR campgrounds prohibit transporting firewood into the parks; firewood must be purchased on site. Connecticut applies the same out-of-state firewood ban at its state campgrounds. Maximum stays are generally fourteen consecutive days at both state systems.
What to expect on the ground
State-forest campgrounds in this area are rustic. American Legion State Forest offers 30 sites in pine woods along the river with restrooms, showers, and a dump station; swimming is not permitted but fishing is, and one pet per site is allowed at standard sites. Granville State Forest has 22 wooded sites with picnic tables, food-storage lockers, fire rings, and an accessible comfort station with flush toilets and hot showers, but no hookups and no dump station.
Private parks are more amenity-driven. Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park offers a mix of seasonal, transient, cabin, and glamping options with a heated pool and family activities. Sodom Mountain Campground and Southwick Acres Campgrounds provide tent, partial, and full-hookup sites in rural wooded settings.
Cell coverage is patchy in the state forests, and generator use is restricted during quiet hours.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Salmon Brook RV booking?
Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to book. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Salmon Brook?
Yes, your pup is welcome on plenty of adventures. Many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental Salmon Brook families love, and you can filter listings by Pet Friendly to see them instantly. Granby is genuinely dog country: the McLean Game Refuge offers over 4,400 acres of leashed-dog-friendly trails, and the Granby D.O.G.G.S. off-leash area is located at Salmon Brook Park on Salmon Brook Street. granby-ct.gov/211/Parks-RecreationCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Salmon Brook?
Yes, RV delivery in Salmon Brook is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many Granby-area hosts will tow a travel trailer directly to your driveway, a friend's place, or a nearby campground, then level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero stress about towing on Route 189 or backing into a tight site. Filter by Delivery when browsing listings, and message the host with your destination to get an exact delivery quote, often a flat fee plus a per-mile rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Salmon%20Brook%2C%20ConnecticutHow many miles can I drive on my Salmon Brook RV rental?
You'll have plenty of road to roam. Most RVezy hosts in the Salmon Brook area offer between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and some list an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer New England loop. For perspective: Boston is roughly 110 miles east, the White Mountains of New Hampshire are about 180 miles north, Acadia National Park sits around 350 miles northeast, and Newport, RI is roughly 130 miles southeast. Each host sets their own mileage policy on their listing, so check the details and message them if you're planning a bigger RV road trip from Salmon Brook than the included miles allow.

For state-park lovers, Austin F. Hawes Campground in the American Legion State Forest is a quiet gem on the Farmington River. portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/state-parks-and-forests-campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Salmon Brook?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Salmon Brook, with the absolute peak being late September into mid-October when Connecticut's sugar maples explode into red and gold. Summer highs sit comfortably in the upper 70s to mid-80s°F, while spring and fall nights dip into the 40s and 50s°F, perfect for campfire weather. July brings warm river-tubing days on the Farmington, and winter rentals (December to February) are limited since temperatures often drop into the teens. Pro tip: aim for the last weekend of September for the best foliage along Route 20 through Granby and into the Berkshires.
weather.gov/box/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Salmon Brook?
You've got this, and first time renting an RV in Salmon Brook is easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and dump procedures so you leave feeling confident. Granby's roads are mostly open, low-traffic country routes like Route 10/202 and Route 20, far easier than navigating Hartford or Boston. If you're nervous about towing or maneuvering, book a Class B campervan or request delivery. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot practice loop after pickup, and save your host's number, most are happy to answer a quick text mid-trip.
portal.ct.gov/dmvWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every RV rental in Salmon Brook on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering tows, tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and mechanical issues. If something goes sideways on I-91 or up in the Berkshires, one call gets help dispatched to your location. Your host is also typically just a text away for quick troubleshooting (a tripped breaker, a finicky water pump), and RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Snap photos of the RV at pickup and save the roadside number in your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Salmon Brook RV rental into other states or Canada?

You're well positioned to roll into Massachusetts (Berkshires in about 45 minutes), Vermont (Green Mountains in roughly 2 hours), New Hampshire's White Mountains (about 3 hours), Maine's Acadia (around 6 hours), or down the coast to Cape Cod (about 3 hours). Cross-border trips into Canada depend on the individual host and protection coverage, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. A classic week-long loop hits the Berkshires, Green Mountains, and White Mountains, all under 800 miles round trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Salmon Brook RV trip?
Budgeting is straightforward once you know the numbers. A Class B campervan rental Salmon Brook drivers love gets 18 to 22 MPG, a travel trailer paired with your tow vehicle averages 10 to 14 MPG, and a Class C motorhome typically runs 8 to 12 MPG. Connecticut gas prices tend to run a bit above the national average, hovering around $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon for regular. For a typical 3-day, 300-mile trip in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Granby or Simsbury before heading north into Massachusetts, where Turnpike-area prices can be higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Salmon Brook?
For the best sites, book early, but you have more flexibility than you'd think. Connecticut state-park campgrounds like Austin F. Hawes and Black Rock open reservations through the state's official reservation system, and prime summer weekends (especially July 4 and Labor Day) fill within days of opening. Private parks like Prospect Mountain and Lone Oak typically need 2 to 3 months of lead time for fall foliage weekends, but mid-week sites are often available just days out. If a weekend is fully booked, check Tuesday through Thursday availability, you'll get the same trails to yourself at a lower rate.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/camping/camping-reservations-and-permitsWhat are driving conditions like around Salmon Brook?
Driving here is genuinely pleasant. Salmon Brook sits in the quiet Farmington Valley of north-central Connecticut, with low-traffic two-lane roads like Route 10/202 and Route 20 making for relaxed RV cruising. You'll want to be aware of a few things: I-91 south toward Hartford gets heavy at rush hour (avoid 4 to 6 PM on weekdays), some covered bridges and older Route 44 segments have low clearances around 11 feet, and winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round. Pro tip: use Route 20 west toward the Berkshires for the prettiest, easiest RV drive in the region.
portal.ct.gov/dot/traveler-services/cttravelsmartWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Salmon Brook?
You'll find a great mix. Private parks like Prospect Mountain Campground and Sodom Mountain Campground typically offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), hot showers, dump stations, laundry, Wi-Fi, and pools. Connecticut state-park campgrounds (Austin F. Hawes, Black Rock, Burr Pond) tend to be more rustic with electric or non-electric sites, potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, and centralized dump stations. Confirm 30-amp vs. 50-amp service matches your rental: your host will tell you which you need.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/state-parks-and-forests-campingWhat's actually inside the RVs available for rent in Salmon Brook?
More than you might expect. A typical motorhome rental in Salmon Brook comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping, and seatbelted travel seats. Many include a TV, Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor awnings, propane grills, and onboard generators for off-grid stays. Family-sized Class C and travel trailer rentals comfortably sleep 4 to 7. Check the listing's amenity list and photos carefully, and message the host to confirm specifics like whether linens, kitchenware, and a coffee maker come included (most do).
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Salmon%20Brook%2C%20ConnecticutWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Salmon Brook?
Hosts offer plenty of extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Salmon Brook include linen and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, portable grills, bike racks, generators, and stocked kitchen kits. Most hosts offer pickup at their Granby-area home, and many offer delivery and setup to campgrounds within 30 to 60 miles for a flat fee plus mileage. Mileage policies typically range from 100 free miles per night to unlimited. Bundle delivery, linens, and a full propane tank into your booking and you'll arrive at your campground with little to set up and more time to enjoy the Farmington River.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Salmon%20Brook%2C%20ConnecticutHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Salmon Brook on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanges with the host. A security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card before the trip, not charged, and released after the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition. Do a thorough walk-around with photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's dump and refuel instructions, and report anything unusual right away. Keep the protection plan documentation handy on your phone, since it covers most accidental damage.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre RV rentals available year-round in Salmon Brook, including winter?
Yes, though winter availability is limited and it's an adventure worth considering. Some Granby-area hosts winterize their RVs from late November through March because Connecticut winters can drop into the teens and snow is common, but a handful of four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces stay available for ski trips to Ski Sundown, Mohawk Mountain, or even Vermont. If you book a winter RV trip in Salmon Brook, plan to stay at private year-round parks with shore power, since most Connecticut state campgrounds close from mid-fall through mid-spring. Message the host before booking to confirm the RV is rated for sub-freezing temps and ask about a space heater.
