Sandy Hook camping overview
Sandy Hook is a village in the town of Newtown in western Connecticut, positioned along the Pootatuck River and within driving distance of the Housatonic River corridor and the Litchfield Hills. RV renters use it as a base for state park camping, lake recreation, and access to Interstate 84 and Route 8.
The closest overnight options split between state park campgrounds and privately run RV parks. Kettletown State Park sits on Lake Zoar to the north in Southbury, while Black Rock State Park lies farther north near Watertown. Private options include Branch Brook Campground in Thomaston and Gentile's Campground in Plymouth, both offering hookups and family amenities. Point Folly, on a peninsula in Bantam Lake, provides rustic lakeside sites within the White Memorial Foundation property.
Most sites in this region are wooded or partially shaded, and terrain is hilly. RV renters should confirm site length limits and hookup availability when booking, since state park sites are generally non-electric and access roads can be narrow.
Things to do near Sandy Hook
Water recreation anchors most trips. Lake Zoar supports fishing and paddling, while Bantam Lake, adjacent to Point Folly, is the largest natural lake in Connecticut and popular for boating, canoeing, and kayaking. Black Rock Pond is a designated trout park, stocked in spring and fall, with a swimming beach.
Hiking is extensive. The blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail passes through Black Rock State Park and connects to Mattatuck State Forest. Kettletown offers about six miles of trails with scenic overlooks of Lake Zoar, though the campground and several trails remain closed for repairs. The White Memorial Foundation offers roughly 35 to 40 miles of trails around Bantam Lake for walking, biking, and cross-country skiing.
Family-oriented amenities at Branch Brook Campground and Gentile's Campground include pools, playgrounds, and courts. Nearby attractions include the Railroad Museum of New England in Thomaston and Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury.

The camping window in this part of Connecticut is tight. State park campgrounds typically operate from mid to late May through Columbus Day weekend. Black Rock State Park generally opens in late May and closes in mid-October, with early-season rustic camping only, meaning portable toilets and no showers or running water until around Memorial Day. Point Folly runs from early May through Columbus Day. Private parks such as Branch Brook and Gentile's have longer seasons, with Gentile's operating year-round and Branch Brook running spring through late fall.
Summer weekends and holiday periods, especially Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, fill first. Foliage weekends in early to mid-October also draw heavy demand at lake and hill sites.
Kettletown State Park sustained major flood damage during heavy rainfall in August 2024. The campground and several trails remain closed and will stay closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons per Connecticut DEEP. Day-use areas and youth group sites remain open. Travelers should verify current status with DEEP before planning a stay.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book a Sandy Hook campsite
Connecticut state park campgrounds, including Black Rock, are reserved through Reserve America under the Connecticut DEEP contract. Reservations are accepted up to 11 months in advance and generally require at least one day of lead time. Resident and non-resident rates differ, and a security deposit is collected at check-in. Alcohol and pets are prohibited at state park campgrounds including Black Rock and Kettletown.
Point Folly is reserved directly through the White Memorial Foundation. Private parks including Branch Brook Campground and Gentile's Campground take reservations by phone or through their websites and offer full hookups.
For peak summer weekends and October foliage dates, book several months out. Cancellations occur regularly, so mid-week openings can appear on short notice.
What to expect at Sandy Hook campgrounds
Expect wooded, hilly terrain and mixed hookup availability. State park sites at Black Rock are non-electric, without water at the site, but include restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Point Folly is rustic with pit toilets, shared drinking water, and a dump station, and it has no electric or water hookups at sites. Branch Brook and Gentile's provide full hookups.
Sites in state parks and at Point Folly often sit close together, and internal roads can be narrow or steep, which matters for larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels. Confirm rig length before booking, as Kettletown historically capped RVs at 28 feet.
Black bears, deer, and raccoons are active in the region, so food and trash should be stored inside vehicles. Fireworks are prohibited in Connecticut state parks, and firewood transport across state lines is restricted to prevent invasive pests.
