Camping near Stepney, Connecticut
Stepney is a village in the town of Monroe in Fairfield County, positioned between the Housatonic River corridor and the Litchfield Hills. For RV travelers, it sits within about a 30 to 45 minute drive of a mix of Connecticut state park campgrounds and privately run RV parks, making it a workable base for weekend trips out of the New York metro or lower New England.
The closest public option is Kettletown State Park on Lake Zoar, though travelers should note the campground sustained flood damage in August 2024 and will remain closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons while access roads and a washed-out bridge are repaired. Black Rock State Park in Watertown is the nearest operating state campground, with tent, RV, and cabin sites near a swimming pond and the Mattatuck Trail.
Private RV parks fill the gaps. Branch Brook Campground in Thomaston and Gentile's Campground in Plymouth both offer full-hookup sites within roughly 45 minutes of Stepney, and Cozy Hills Campground in Bantam sits deeper in the Litchfield Hills with a larger amenity roster suited to families.
Things to do around Stepney
Water and trails drive most trips. Lake Zoar, an impoundment of the Housatonic River, is a short drive north for fishing and boating, while Black Rock Pond offers swimming, stocked trout fishing as a designated Connecticut Trout Park, and access to the blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail that connects into Mattatuck State Forest.
Families traveling with kids often pair a campground stay with Lake Compounce or Quassy Amusement Park, both within easy reach of Bristol and Middlebury. Cozy Hills Campground adds an in-ground pool, outdoor laser tag, an arcade, and stocked fishing ponds on its Litchfield Hills property.
Day trips west toward Litchfield reach the historic town green, Bantam Lake, and the White Memorial Conservation Center's trail network. Covered bridges around Cornwall and West Cornwall make a scenic loop for a full-day drive.

The camping window in this part of Connecticut is short. Black Rock State Park opens in late May and closes on Columbus Day at noon, with early-season camping designated as rustic only until Memorial Day, when bathhouses and running water come online. Private parks like Cozy Hills and Branch Brook run roughly mid-April into mid-October.
Summer brings warm, humid weather with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; July is typically the hottest month and August tends to be the wettest. Sites near lakes and streams book well ahead for July, August, and Labor Day weekend, and holiday weekends often carry a multi-night minimum at private parks.
Fall foliage from late September through mid-October is peak demand in the Litchfield Hills, and October weekends sell out early at private campgrounds. Winter camping is limited to a few private parks with year-round sites; state park campgrounds are closed and roads through hilly campground loops can ice over.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book
Connecticut state park campsites, including Black Rock State Park, are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica portal or by phone at 1-877-668-CAMP. Reservations can be made up to eleven months ahead. The maximum stay is fourteen consecutive days, after which the party must vacate the park for five days before returning.
Private parks handle reservations directly. Branch Brook Campground, Gentile's Campground, and Cozy Hills Campground take bookings through their own websites or by phone, with deposits typically required and holiday weekends often carrying a multi-night minimum.
Check in at state parks is 1:00 PM (2:00 PM for cabins) and check out is noon; no check-ins are allowed after 10:00 PM. Kettletown State Park will not accept camping reservations for the 2026 or 2027 seasons, so travelers should redirect to Black Rock or a nearby private park.
What to expect
Connecticut state park campgrounds are rustic by design. Black Rock has flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, with a mix of non-electric and newly upgraded standard-electric sites and no individual water hookups; a central bathhouse serves the loops. Pets and alcohol are prohibited in state campgrounds, and firewood cannot be brought in from out of state to protect against invasive pests.
Private parks near Stepney lean the other way: full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, on-site stores, laundry, and pools. Sites at Branch Brook and Gentile's can be tight for larger rigs in some loops, so calling ahead about site length and back-in versus pull-through is worth the time.
Black bears, raccoons, and deer are active across the region, so food and trash must be stored in the RV or in bear-resistant containers. Cell coverage is generally reliable in the Housatonic Valley but can drop in wooded state-forest sections.
