Campgrounds near Storrs, Connecticut
Storrs sits in the rolling hills of Tolland County in northeastern Connecticut, home to the main campus of the University of Connecticut and surrounded by working farmland, state forests, and the reservoir lands of the Natchaug and Willimantic river systems. The area is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Quiet Corner, with I-84 to the north and Route 6 running through Willimantic to the south.
Most overnight RV camping happens at privately operated resorts rather than inside state parks. Moosemeadow Camping Resort and Wilderness Lake Park sit a short drive northwest in Willington, while Brialee RV and Tent Park Inc is located west toward Ashford. Nickerson Park Family Campground lies east in Chaplin, and Charlie Brown Campground rounds out the cluster in the Ashford area.
Day-use options fill in the gaps. Mansfield Hollow State Park is a public recreation area on the western shore of Mansfield Hollow Lake in the town of Mansfield, minutes from Storrs, offering trails, boat launches, and picnic areas, though the park itself does not allow overnight camping.
Things to do around Storrs
Recreational opportunities at Mansfield Hollow include boating, fishing, picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing, and the park is traversed by the southeastern leg of the Nipmuck Trail. The damming of the Natchaug River by the Army Corps of Engineers created a lake used for boating and fishing, though swimming is not allowed because part of the lake serves as a public water supply.
On the UConn campus, families can visit the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History, the William Benton Museum of Art, and the university's dairy bar. The Adventure Park at Storrs offers aerial obstacle courses within a short drive.
Campground amenities add plenty for kids. At Moosemeadow Camping Resort, sites range from wooded with tent pads to open grassy full-hookup, and recreation includes a softball field, tennis court, fishing pond, sauna, game room, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard, volleyball court, swimming pool, wading pool, and a playground.

The camping season in this part of Connecticut runs roughly from mid-spring through mid-fall. Moosemeadow Camping Resort typically operates from mid-April through Columbus Day in October, and other private campgrounds in the area follow similar windows. Connecticut state park campgrounds generally open in mid-to-late May and close in mid-October, so backup options at nearby state forests track the same rhythm.
Summer is peak. Weekends from late June through Labor Day fill quickly, especially around UConn move-in and family holidays, and reservations should be locked in well ahead. Spring is cool and often wet, with mud lingering into May at wooded sites.
Fall brings the region's strongest color, typically peaking in mid-October across the Quiet Corner. After Labor Day at state park campgrounds, standard campsites are available for walk-in registration Sunday through Thursday nights, with advance reservations required for Friday and Saturday nights. Winter camping is generally not offered at the private parks near Storrs.

How to book campgrounds near Storrs
Private campgrounds near Storrs handle their own reservations. Moosemeadow Camping Resort, Wilderness Lake Park, Brialee RV and Tent Park Inc, Nickerson Park Family Campground, and Charlie Brown Campground each take bookings directly by phone or through their websites, and popular summer weekends can sell out months in advance.
For state park backup options in eastern Connecticut, the state uses ReserveAmerica for campground reservations. Bookings are accepted up to 11 months in advance of the camping stay, with a two-night minimum for most advance reservations. Reservations made within one to three days of arrival may be for a single night at most inland campgrounds.
Bringing firewood into Connecticut state campgrounds and state parks from other states is prohibited to protect against insect pests. Firewood can be purchased at camp stores within state campgrounds or from local retail sellers, and private parks in the region widely follow the same rule.
What to expect at Storrs campgrounds
Expect wooded, hilly terrain with sites ranging from open grassy pull-throughs to shaded back-ins under mature hardwoods. Road access is generally straightforward from I-84 and US-6, but final approaches to some campgrounds involve narrow rural roads, so large Class A rigs should confirm turning clearances with the campground before arrival.
Hookups vary by park. Full 30- and 50-amp service is common at the private resorts, along with dump stations, laundry, camp stores, and pools. State park campgrounds in Connecticut are generally more rustic, with restrooms and showers but fewer electric sites.
Biting insects are a factor from late May through August, with mosquitoes and ticks active in the woodlands. Pets, alcohol, hammocks, and drones are prohibited at Connecticut state park campgrounds, and policies vary widely at private parks, so verify before booking.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Storrs, CT
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Storrs, CT?
RV rental in Storrs is more affordable than most travelers expect, with travel trailers typically starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs running $300 and up. Because RVezy is a peer-to-peer marketplace, real owners in the Storrs area set their own pricing, so you can filter by price, RV type, and sleeps count to find the right match. To score a cheap RV rental in Storrs, book midweek, travel in May or late September around UConn's quieter weeks, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: hosts near campus often drop rates after football season ends in November.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Storrs%2C%20ConnecticutWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Storrs, Connecticut?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Storrs. The Connecticut DMV does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally. To book on RVezy, you generally need to be 25 or older with a valid license, which you'll verify quickly through the platform's ID confirmation process. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're ready to roll. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork is, you can be booked in under 15 minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Storrs RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in Storrs automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on your trip instead of worst-case scenarios. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your rental, and at checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort, from basic to premium. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides real peace of mind, especially for first-time renters heading into Connecticut's wooded backroads or up to the Berkshires. You select your coverage, not the host, which means you stay in control. Pair that with the host walkthrough at pickup and you'll feel confident from the moment you turn the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my RV rental in Storrs?
Booking with confidence is easy because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period after you book so you have time to plan without pressure. If life happens, a UConn schedule change, a sudden New England nor'easter, or a family emergency, refund eligibility depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start. Cancellation terms are handled at the platform level for consistency rather than buried inside each listing. Pro tip: book your Storrs RV trip early to lock in the best rigs for fall foliage weekends, you'll still have that grace period to adjust if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Storrs?
Absolutely, Storrs is a wonderfully dog-friendly area and many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Storrs, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching. Connecticut State Forests like nearby Natchaug and Nipmuck allow leashed pets, and private parks like Charlie Brown Campground in Eastford and Nickerson Park Family Campground in Chaplin welcome four-legged guests. Mansfield Hollow State Park is a local favorite for leashed trail walks before heading back to camp. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and bring proof of rabies vaccination, which Connecticut campgrounds typically require.
portal.ct.gov/deep/state-parks/pets-in-state-parks-and-forestsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Storrs?
Yes, RV delivery in Storrs is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig down Route 195. Many hosts will deliver, level, and set up the RV directly at your campsite, whether that's Mashamoquet Brook State Park in Pomfret, Salt Rock State Park in Baltic, or a private spot like Wilderness Lake Campground in Stafford Springs. They'll connect water and electric, walk you through every system, and pick it up at the end of your stay. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message to confirm mileage fees. It's the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Storrs with zero driving stress.

From Storrs you're about 30 miles to Hartford, 80 miles to Boston, 75 miles to Providence, and roughly 150 miles to Cape Cod, so a week of exploring easily fits within standard mileage. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings with generous mileage allowances, and ask hosts about discounted overage rates upfront so your budget stays predictable.

For state-run camping, Mashamoquet Brook State Park in Pomfret is a beautiful drive with wooded sites. Reserve Connecticut state campgrounds through ReserveAmerica up to 11 months ahead. Pro tip: book Charlie Brown by March for July weekends, it fills fast with UConn families.
connecticutstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Storrs?

Summer temperatures sit in the comfortable 75 to 85 F range with warm nights perfect for campfires, while fall brings crisp 50 to 65 F days that light up the maples around Mansfield Hollow in fiery reds and oranges. Spring (April to early May) can be muddy and buggy but quiet and cheap. Most Connecticut state park campgrounds open mid-April and close after Columbus Day weekend. Pro tip: book your foliage week by July, it's the most competitive time of year.
weather.gov/box/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving around Storrs?
You'll do great, Storrs is actually one of the friendliest places in the Northeast for first time renting an RV. Roads like Route 195, Route 6, and Route 44 are wide, two-lane country highways with gentle curves and minimal city traffic, very different from Boston or NYC. Your host will provide a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, hookups, propane, and waste tanks, plus you can text or call them anytime during your trip. Stick to RVs under 30 feet for your first time and you'll feel comfortable within an hour. Pro tip: do a short practice drive in the UConn North Garage area before hitting the highway, it's spacious and quiet on weekends.
portal.ct.gov/dmv/driver-services/driver-services/safe-driving-tipsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is always one phone call away. Every Storrs RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing when needed. On top of that, your host is usually your fastest resource for quick questions like how to relight the water heater or reset the generator. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number to your phone before pickup so you're ready for anything.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Storrs RV rental on an RV road trip to other states or Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Storrs is one of the best ways to see New England, and most hosts welcome interstate travel across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and New York. Crossing into Canada (Quebec or the Maritimes) may be allowed with specific host approval and insurance confirmation, so message the host directly before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular routes include Storrs to Cape Cod (150 miles), Storrs to the White Mountains (200 miles), Storrs to Acadia National Park in Maine (350 miles), and Storrs to the Adirondacks (220 miles). Pro tip: bring your passport just in case a White Mountains trip tempts you north.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much will fuel cost on my Storrs RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but it's easy to budget once you know the numbers. Connecticut gas prices typically run a bit higher than the national average, hovering around $3.20 to $3.70 per gallon for regular unleaded in the Storrs area, with diesel slightly higher. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A rigs 6 to 9 MPG. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop through eastern Connecticut, plan on $60 to $120 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up off-highway in Mansfield or Willimantic rather than at I-84 plaza stations, you'll often save 20 to 40 cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Storrs?
For peak weekends, book early and you'll thank yourself later. Connecticut state park campgrounds open reservations up to 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and popular spots like Hammonasset Beach (about 75 miles south) and Mashamoquet Brook fill up the day the booking window opens for July and August. Private campgrounds like Charlie Brown, Brialee, and Nickerson Park typically take reservations 6 to 12 months out and fill summer weekends by April. For a midweek trip or a shoulder-season getaway, you can often book just two to three weeks ahead. Pro tip: UConn graduation weekend in May and homecoming in October book out fastest in Storrs proper, plan accordingly.
connecticutstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Storrs?
Driving an RV around Storrs is refreshingly low-stress compared to most of the Northeast. The area is dominated by rolling hills, scenic two-lane roads, and the UConn campus core, with light traffic outside of move-in week and game days. Route 195 is your main artery through town, and I-84 (15 miles north) and I-395 (20 miles east) connect you to the rest of New England. Watch for: low-hanging tree branches on backroads like Route 89, occasional moose or deer at dawn/dusk, and snowy or icy conditions November through March. Pro tip: avoid driving through Storrs Center between 3 and 6 p.m. on weekdays during the school year, student foot traffic is heavy.

Campgrounds near Storrs are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Private parks like Brialee, Charlie Brown, and Nickerson Park offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer at most sites), dump stations, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, swimming pools, and propane refills. Connecticut state campgrounds like Mashamoquet Brook and Salt Rock provide water spigots, dump stations, and flush toilets, but typically no individual hookups, so you'll rely on your RV's onboard systems. The closest public dump station is at Mashamoquet Brook, and most private parks let day-users dump for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water at the campground spigot before heading out, Connecticut tap water is excellent throughout the Storrs region.

Many hosts also include a TV, outdoor awning, camp chairs, BBQ, and an onboard generator for off-grid stays. Wi-Fi varies by host, some include mobile hotspots and others do not, so ask if you're working remotely. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities tab and message the host to confirm anything essential before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Storrs%2C%20ConnecticutWhat add-ons can I get with my Storrs RV rental?

Delivery and setup is a popular add-on at around $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. Pickup is typically between 1 and 4 p.m. with dropoff by 11 a.m., though many hosts flex these times. Mileage policies vary, with 100 to 150 free miles per night standard. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a camping kit and you'll arrive to a fully set-up campsite with nothing to unpack but your clothes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Storrs%2C%20ConnecticutHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and fully handled through the secure platform, no cash or checks to the host. You'll pay the rental total (nightly rate, service fee, taxes, and any add-ons) when you book, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV. The deposit is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back clean and undamaged. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it. Pro tip: a quick walkthrough video on your phone at pickup is your best friend for a smooth refund.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs RV camping in Storrs good for a family trip?
A family RV trip to Storrs is genuinely one of the best New England getaways you can plan. Kids love the UConn Dairy Bar (homemade ice cream from the university's own cows), the Connecticut Museum of Natural History, hiking the Nipmuck Trail, and swimming at Mansfield Hollow State Park. Family-favorite campgrounds like Brialee and Charlie Brown offer pools, mini golf, playgrounds, and weekend activities for kids. Most RVs on RVezy sleep 4 to 8 with bunk options, and pet-friendly listings mean the dog comes too. Pro tip: pair a Storrs weekend with a midweek run to Mystic Seaport (50 miles south), it's the perfect two-stop family loop and avoids weekend traffic on I-95.
