Camping near Tashua, Connecticut
Tashua is a village within Trumbull in Fairfield County, Connecticut, set in the state's wooded southwestern hills. RV travelers based here have access to a mix of state park campgrounds in the Western Highlands and Litchfield Hills, plus privately owned parks with full hookups suited to larger rigs.
The closest state-run camping is in the Naugatuck Valley and Litchfield County, roughly a 30 to 60 minute drive north. Kettletown State Park features Lake Zoar, the fifth largest freshwater body in the state, created in 1919 when the Connecticut Light and Power Company constructed the Stevenson Dam. The water of the Housatonic River feeds Lake Zoar, a popular site for water sports. Kettletown covers 605 acres in the towns of Southbury and Oxford. Black Rock State Park is a 439-acre park tucked into the scenic rolling hills of the Western Highlands near Watertown.
For RV-friendly private options, Gentile's Campground, Branch Brook Campground, and Cozy Hills Campground all offer hookups, on-site amenities, and family programming, making them practical bases for exploring western Connecticut.
Things to do near Tashua
Hiking, fishing, and swimming drive most trips. Bisected by the Mattatuck Trail and home to a network of intersecting trails and footpaths, Black Rock offers something for every hiker, from 30-minute strolls to all-day treks. As one of Connecticut's 13 designated trout parks, Black Rock Pond is regularly restocked throughout the spring and fall.
Lake Zoar at Kettletown is popular for boating and paddling, though swimming is not available at Kettletown State Park. Private parks add family features: Gentile's Campground offers a swimming pool, courts, mini-golf, playground, and an arcade. Cozy Hills adds outdoor laser tag, stocked fishing ponds, an in-ground pool, an arcade, a restaurant, a store, and a pavilion. Branch Brook rounds things out with a pool, pickleball, and brook fishing.

Camping in this part of Connecticut is a warm-season activity. State parks generally run from late spring through early fall, with private parks bracketing a similar window. The Black Rock State Park campground opens Friday, May 22 and closes Monday, October 12 at noon for the 2026 season, with the 2027 season opening Friday, May 28. Early season is designated as rustic camping only, with no bathrooms, showers or running water available, and portable toilets are staged near the campground office.
Private parks stretch the window on both ends, generally operating from spring through mid-to-late fall.
A major planning note: the Kettletown State Park campground will remain closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons due to flood damages sustained during an unprecedented heavy rainfall event in August 2024. The flooding caused extensive damage to the park access roads and washed out the bridge on the campground road. Day-use areas remain open. Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends at Black Rock and the private parks fill fastest; winter camping is not offered at these locations.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book a site
Connecticut state park campgrounds are booked through the state's Reserve America portal. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Bookings can also be made by phone at 1-877-668-CAMP (2267). After Labor Day at Black Rock, campsites are available for advance reservations on Friday and Saturday nights and open to walk-ins Sunday through Thursday, cabins are not available after Labor Day, and the campground closes for the season on Columbus Day.
Private parks handle their own reservations. Branch Brook, Gentile's, and Cozy Hills all take bookings by phone or through their own websites. Reserve summer holiday weekends and foliage dates well ahead.
What to expect on-site
State park sites lean rustic. Expect fire rings, picnic tables, and shared bathhouses. At Black Rock, a dump station, bathrooms, and showers are provided at central locations in the campground, but bathrooms are not available at the campground until Memorial Day, with portable toilets available prior to Memorial Day. Alcohol is not allowed anywhere within the park, and pets are not allowed in the campground. The maximum length of stay is fourteen consecutive days, after which all members of the camping party and camping equipment must leave the park for 5 days before returning.
Private parks offer more RV comforts, including full hookups, on-site laundry, and pool access, and can generally accommodate larger rigs. Bringing firewood into Connecticut state parks from other states is strictly prohibited to protect forests from destructive insect pests; buy firewood locally instead. Black bears, deer, skunks, raccoons and other wildlife share this space, so plan to store all food, hygiene items and trash in appropriate containers or in the vehicle.
