Campgrounds and RV parks near Terryville, CT

The signature family draw is Lake Compounce in Bristol, with classic and modern coasters plus a water park. Bear Creek Lake Compounce Campground provides direct access to Lake Compounce's attractions, including classic roller coasters, water park rides, and entertainment suitable for all ages. For outdoor days, Black Rock State Park is one of Connecticut's 13 designated trout parks, with Black Rock Pond regularly restocked with brown and rainbow trout throughout spring and fall, alongside hiking, picnicking, and swimming. The park's trail network includes the blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail, which offers challenging climbs and panoramic views of the Naugatuck Valley, as well as easier footpaths around the pond. Around Bantam Lake, the White Memorial property offers low-key recreation. There are approximately 35 miles of trail on the property, which can be used for walking, running, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country-skiing. There is also a mile-long boardwalk through the marsh around Little Pond. With large areas of the property abutting Bantam Lake and the Bantam River, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing are popular activities.

The Connecticut camping calendar is built around late spring through early fall. At Black Rock State Park, the camping season begins in mid-April (weekends only from the third Saturday in April until Memorial Day Weekend) and ends September 30, though recent seasons have shifted later into May with an October close. Bathrooms are not available at the Black Rock campground until Memorial Day. Portable toilets are available prior to Memorial Day. After Labor Day, campsites are available for advance reservations on Friday and Saturday nights, and are available to walk-ins on Sunday through Thursday nights. Cabins are not available after Labor Day. The campground closes for the season on Columbus Day. White Memorial has two distinct season windows. The season at Point Folly begins early May and ends on Columbus Day. Windmill Hill is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Summer weekends, especially around the July 4 holiday and Lake Compounce's peak operating weeks, sell out earliest. Spring and fall shoulder weeks bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier site selection, but campers should expect frost risk in April and again from late September onward at higher elevations in the Litchfield Hills.

Expect a mix of full-service private parks and rustic public sites. Bear Creek Lake Compounce caters to RVs of all sizes with hookup options including 30-amp and 50-amp electrical connections, water hookup, and pull-through sites. Guests have access to a dump station, laundry, showers, and modern restroom facilities. Note that individual sites do not have sewer connections; a dump station handles waste disposal on the way out. State and conservation sites are simpler. Black Rock's campground amenities include bathhouses with hot showers and dishwashing facilities, a dumping station, and accessible campsites, and pets and alcohol are prohibited throughout the park. At Windmill Hill, no vehicles larger than a van or pickup are allowed in the campground, and it is restricted to tent camping only, so larger rigs should stage at a private park nearby. Bringing firewood into state campgrounds from out of state is prohibited; buy it locally. Bears, deer, raccoons, and skunks share the area, so store food and trash securely.
