Camping near Thomaston, Connecticut
Thomaston sits in the Naugatuck River valley of western Connecticut, in Litchfield County. The town works as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Litchfield Hills, with several campgrounds within a short drive and easy access via Route 8 and US Route 6.
The closest public option is Black Rock State Park, a state park adjoining Mattatuck State Forest and known for a rock face with views over the surrounding valley. The park has wooded and open campsites plus four rustic cabins, and it is managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Reservations run through Reserve America.
Other nearby options include Branch Brook Campground, Gentile's Campground, and the White Memorial Foundation Family Campgrounds Windmill Hill in Litchfield. White Memorial covers roughly 4,000 acres of forest, fields, and wetlands around Bantam Lake, giving campers direct access to trails, water, and a conservation center.
Things to do near Thomaston
Black Rock State Park is a designated trout park, with Black Rock Pond stocked in spring and fall. The park also offers swimming, picnicking, and hiking on the Mattatuck Trail, which crosses the property on its way through the Litchfield Hills.
At White Memorial in Litchfield, campers can use roughly 35 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing, plus a mile-long boardwalk through the marsh at Little Pond. Bantam Lake and the Bantam River are popular for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, with a marina and boat launch at Point Folly.
Base camps at Branch Brook Campground, Gentile's Campground, or Windmill Hill also put travelers within reach of Litchfield's historic center and the wider Litchfield Hills.

After Labor Day, sites are available for advance reservations Friday and Saturday and walk-in Sunday through Thursday, with the campground closing for the season on Columbus Day. Cabins are not offered after Labor Day, and bathrooms and running water are not available before Memorial Day, when portable toilets are provided instead.
White Memorial's two campgrounds follow similar rhythms. Point Folly on Bantam Lake opens in early May and runs through Columbus Day, while Windmill Hill operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Summer weekends fill quickly, especially July and August, when warm weather draws swimmers and anglers to the ponds and lakes. Fall brings foliage color and cooler nights, and spring is the wettest stretch, with muddy trails and cold overnight lows still common through April.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book campgrounds near Thomaston
Black Rock State Park reservations are handled through Reserve America. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, and demand for summer weekends is heavy, so book early. Check-in is in the afternoon and checkout is midday. Alcohol and pets are prohibited in the campground.
White Memorial Foundation Family Campgrounds Windmill Hill and Point Folly are booked directly through the foundation, with weekly reservations opening in mid-January and weekend reservations opening in mid-February. Windmill Hill is limited to tents and small vehicles no larger than a van or pickup, so larger rigs should look at Point Folly or a private campground.
For larger rigs and full hookups, private options such as Branch Brook Campground and Gentile's Campground are booked directly with the operator.
What to expect on the ground
Sites at Black Rock State Park mix wooded and open settings, with standard non-electric sites plus four rustic cabins. The cabins have basic sleeping accommodations but no kitchens or bathrooms. The park has a dump station, bathrooms, showers, fishing, and swimming, and pets are not allowed in the campground.
Windmill Hill has 18 sites tucked in quiet pine woods and is restricted to tents and small vehicles only. Point Folly has 47 sites on a peninsula in Bantam Lake, with drinking water, pit toilets, and a dump station but no individual hookups.
Expect Connecticut summer humidity, biting insects near ponds and marshes, and cool overnight temperatures well into June and again from September onward. Cell service is generally usable in the valley but can drop off on trails and in wooded state park sites.
