Thunderstorms are common but usually short-lived. Fall is the strongest shoulder season. Foliage typically peaks in mid to late October across the Quinebaug and Shetucket river valleys, and nights turn cold quickly. Hunting is permitted in some adjacent state forest lands during the fall season, so campers should check current regulations. Private campgrounds such as Nickerson Park Family Campground and Odetah Campground generally stay open later than the state parks.
