Campgrounds and RV parks near Buckhead, GA

The Fort McAllister State Historic Site is the primary local draw. Located south of Savannah on the banks of the Ogeechee River, this scenic park showcases the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy, and visitors can explore the grounds with cannons, a furnace, bombproof barracks, palisades and more, while a Civil War museum contains artifacts, a video and gift shop. The shaded campground is bordered by tidal Redbird Creek, with a boat ramp, fishing dock and nature trail, and a large picnic area offers river views and playgrounds, while another boat ramp provides access to the Ogeechee River. Beyond the fort, families use Buckhead as a launch point for downtown Savannah's historic squares, Tybee Island beaches, and Fort Pulaski National Monument. Kayaking and fishing on the Ogeechee River and Redbird Creek are popular, and CreekFire Resort offers canoe, kayak and Jon boat rentals for guests staying on-site.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in coastal Bryan County. Daytime highs are mild, humidity is lower than in summer, and mosquito pressure is reduced. These shoulder seasons also line up with peak reservations at Fort Mcallister Historic Park, so booking well in advance is important. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and the region's highest rainfall. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and the coastal Georgia corridor including Richmond Hill and Bryan County is exposed to tropical storms and flooding. Travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center updates and be prepared for possible park closures or evacuations during a watch or warning. Winters are generally mild and quiet at the campgrounds. Freezing temperatures happen sporadically at night in Savannah from November until March, and Savannah typically has 21 frosty nights a year. At CreekFire, the lazy river and splash pad are open from early March to the end of October, so some seasonal amenities close during the coldest months.

At Fort Mcallister Historic Park, expect a shaded campground bordered by tidal Redbird Creek, a boat ramp, fishing dock and nature trail, with a large picnic area offering river views and playgrounds. Park hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., so late arrivals should confirm after-hours check-in in advance. Private parks in the area are set up for larger rigs. Savannah South KOA sits along a lake in Richmond Hill, providing year-round camping with full hookups for RVs up to 55 feet. CreekFire is a 105-acre resort offering over 200 full-hookup RV sites and cabins, with a pool, lazy river, splash pad, tennis and basketball courts, hot tub, and an on-site lakefront restaurant. Sites are generally level with paved or gravel pads, and staff at the KOA escort arriving campers to their assigned spots.
