Campgrounds and RV parks near Port Wentworth, GA

The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is the closest major outdoor draw, with a four-mile Wildlife Drive, freshwater impoundments, and boardwalks. The refuge hosts alligators, wading birds, and a wide variety of bird species including bald eagles, making it a strong pick for families with kids and binoculars. Downtown Savannah is roughly fifteen to twenty minutes south and works best as a day trip: park once and walk the squares, River Street, and Forsyth Park. Tybee Island beaches and the lighthouse add another thirty minutes east. Closer to camp, Old Fort Jackson, Fort Pulaski National Monument, and the Georgia State Railroad Museum are compact stops that pair well with a half-day in the city. Kayak launches on the Savannah River and Ebenezer Creek offer flat-water paddling suitable for beginners.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows. From mid-February through May and again from October into November, daytime highs run comfortable, humidity drops, and mosquitoes are manageable. These shoulder seasons align with peak Savannah tourism, so RV sites at parks like Red Gate Campground and RV Resort and CreekFire Resort book well in advance, especially around St. Patrick's Day weekend. Summer is hot and humid, with average highs in the low 90s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June through November along the Georgia coast, with the peak threat window from mid-August through October, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm cancellation policies. Winters are short and mild. Freezing nights happen sporadically from November into March, averaging roughly twenty-one frosty nights annually, but daytime highs typically climb back into the 60s. Most area RV parks stay open year-round, making winter a viable option for snowbirds seeking lower demand and cooler sightseeing weather.

Expect flat coastal terrain, mature oaks draped in Spanish moss, and soft or sandy soil at many sites. Level concrete or gravel pads are common at the larger resorts, while smaller grounds may have grass pads that soften after heavy rain. Bring extra leveling blocks for older sites. Full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service are standard at the resorts listed above. Cell coverage is generally strong on major carriers throughout Chatham County, though signal weakens inside the wildlife refuge and along Ebenezer Creek. WiFi quality varies by park. Biting insects, including mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and yellow flies, are active from late spring through early fall. Pack repellent, keep screens closed at dusk, and expect alligators in any freshwater pond or slough. Fire ants are also common in grassy areas.
