The RV season in northeast Iowa is concentrated between spring and mid-fall. At George Wyth State Park, the campground is closed each year from November 1 through March 31, with peak-season rates in effect from May 1 through October 15. Park staff generally aim to have water, showers, and the dump station open by May 1 and start closing them around mid-October, so modern facilities are not guaranteed in April or later October. Private parks in the area generally follow a similar mid-April to late-October pattern, with a few offering limited winter operation.
Summer is the busiest and warmest stretch, with weekend sites often filling weeks ahead around holidays and local events. Spring and early fall offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations, though river levels can run high after heavy spring rain. Winter camping options are very limited, and most amenities close after the peak window.
How to book campgrounds near Evansdale
State-park sites are booked through the Iowa DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. George Wyth State Park is 100 percent reservable, with a reservation required for every site. The campground accepts reservations for arrival dates from April 1 through October 31, and same-day bookings are accepted online until 10 p.m. CST, so peak summer weekends should still be locked in early.
Private campgrounds, including Waterloo/Lost Island KOA Resort, Morwood Campground and Resort, Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground, and BEYONDER Getaway at Lazy Acres, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends and event dates tied to Waterloo and Cedar Falls tend to book out first, so flexible mid-week arrivals often expand availability.
What to expect at Evansdale campgrounds
Expect a mix of shaded and open sites on generally level ground. At George Wyth State Park, the campground offers electric and non-electric sites, modern showers, restrooms, and a trailer dump station, with direct access to the Cedar Valley trails from the campground. The park has 47 electric sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp hookups, plus non-electric, tent-only, and walk-to sites. Private parks in the area typically add full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and family amenities such as pools or playgrounds.
Bring insect repellent for summer stays near the lakes and river, and pack rain gear during the wetter late-spring months. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed across Iowa, so buying firewood locally near your campground is the safer choice.
