Campgrounds near Fontanelle, Iowa
Fontanelle sits in Adair County in southwest Iowa, within easy driving distance of several Iowa state parks and city-run recreation areas that welcome RVs. The closest developed campground is Lake Anita State Park, a 1,062-acre park whose centerpiece is a 171-acre artificial lake formed by damming a branch of the Nishnabotna River. To the south, Green Valley State Park in Union County sits about three miles north of Creston, and to the north Springbrook State Park in Guthrie County lies about six miles west of Yale on a spring-fed 17-acre lake near the Middle Raccoon River.
City and private options round out the choices. Schildberg Recreation Area sits just northwest of Atlantic and includes three lakes for fishing, while Shady Brook Camping and RV Adventures, LLC provides a smaller private alternative.
Most visitors base out of an Iowa state park for full hookups or electric sites near a lake, then use Fontanelle as a quiet home town between day trips on Interstate 80.
Things to do near Fontanelle
Fishing and paddling drive most trips. Lake Anita is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and channel catfish, with fishing jetties along the shoreline and two boat ramps for anglers, and Green Valley Lake offers walleye, bluegill and channel catfish plus a sandy swimming beach and no-wake boating.
On land, families can hike or bike. Lake Anita has more than five miles of trails winding through restored prairie, and the paved Grass Roots Trail connects the park to downtown Anita. Springbrook has about 12 miles of hiking trails plus 4 miles of designated snowmobiling trails in winter, and Green Valley features a 6.5-mile paved multi-use trail linking the park to Creston.
Schildberg has a large on-site dog park where pets can play off-leash, useful for travelers with dogs.

Iowa state park campgrounds run a defined season. Lake Anita, Green Valley and Springbrook campgrounds are all closed each year from November 1 through March 31, and each is 100 percent reservable, accepting reservations April 1 through October 31 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival. Peak season at all three parks runs May 1 through October 15, with off-peak windows in April and the second half of October.
Spring shoulder season is quieter but comes with caveats. Park staff generally try to have water, shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1 and start closing them around mid-October depending on weather, so April and late-October campers should call ahead to confirm hydrant availability.
Summer weekends fill up, and it is advisable to book well in advance for weekend stays. The Sherburne House cabin at Springbrook is reservable year round, making it a rare cold-weather option in the area when the campgrounds themselves are closed.
How to book a campsite
The three nearby Iowa state parks all use the same statewide system. Reservations for these campgrounds are handled through the ReserveAmerica reservation site, and reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance with a minimum of 7 days ahead of arrival for advance bookings. Same-day walk-in reservations are also possible through 10:00 pm CST at Lake Anita, Green Valley and Springbrook during the open season.
Cabin renters should plan ahead. Green Valley cabins are reservable April 15 through October 15, with walk-in availability October 16 through November 15, and the Sherburne House at Springbrook is available for reservations year round, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and sleeping for 12.
Schildberg Recreation Area is a city-operated campground in Atlantic and is booked directly through the city rather than the state system.
What to expect on-site
Expect modern but modest facilities. Lake Anita has electric, non-electric and full hook-up sites plus modern showers and restrooms, with fire rings and picnic tables at each site and the tent area kept separate from the RV section. Green Valley has 145 campsites, 85 with electrical hookups, modern restrooms and showers, and a trailer dump station. Springbrook has a large campground with electric hookups, modern showers and restrooms, and a dump station.
A few practical notes. Springbrook is known for a peaceful atmosphere but has limited cell reception in the campground. Wind at Schildberg can be strong and gusty, and interior roads and most sites are gravel, which kicks up dust. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed across Iowa, so buy firewood locally rather than hauling your own.
