Campgrounds and RV parks near Hedrick, IA

Lake-based recreation drives most trips. Lake Darling has a 302-acre lake with a swim beach, boat ramps, a rental concession for kayaks and paddleboards, and a 13.6-mile trail that circles the lake through wetlands, prairie remnants, and woodland. Anglers target catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, and bluegill. Lake Wapello covers 289 acres with one of the finest sand beaches in southern Iowa, a stone-and-timber 1930s beach building, and a 7-mile Lake Shore Trail. Motorboats are limited to 5 mph, which keeps the water calm for canoes and kayaks. Fishing is strong for bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, and channel catfish, with largemouth bass catch-and-release. Off the water, the Amish farm country around Bloomfield is a common day trip, and Ottumwa adds groceries, fuel, and dump-station access for RV travelers.

The state-park camping season in this part of Iowa is tightly bracketed. Lake Darling and Lake Wapello campgrounds are closed from November 1 through March 31, with an off-peak shoulder in April and again in the second half of October, and peak operation from May 1 through October 15. Modern shower buildings, water hydrants, and dump stations are generally turned on around May 1 and closed down in mid-October, so April and late-October trips may only have limited utilities. Summer is the busiest stretch. Beach concessions and boat rentals run Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and family cabins book up quickly for weekends. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, fewer bugs, and better site availability, but Iowa's shoulder seasons swing quickly between warm days and near-freezing nights. Winter camping at state-park campgrounds is not an option here, though a small number of year-round cabins remain available at both Lake Darling and Lake Wapello, and private RV parks in the area may stay open through the colder months.

State-park campgrounds in this area are laid out with a mix of full-hookup, electric, and non-electric sites, modern shower and restroom buildings, playgrounds, and dump stations. Lake Darling has 80 sites, with 15 full hook-up, roughly 50 standard electric, and 15 non-electric, and can accommodate pull-through and back-in rigs up to about 60 feet. Lake Wapello's campground has 89 units, 44 of them with electrical service. Sites at both parks are wooded to varying degrees, and some at Lake Wapello sit close enough to the water for direct lake access. Expect gravel pads that may not be level, and limited cell service near the lakes. Bring leveling blocks, extra water, and firewood purchased locally to slow the spread of forest pests. Private parks near Eddyville are smaller and more utilitarian, with electric and full-hookup sites aimed at overnighters and monthly stays rather than lake recreation.
