Campgrounds and RV parks near Kalona, IA

Water recreation anchors most itineraries. Lake Macbride State Park surrounds an 812-acre reservoir with a swimming beach, multiple boat ramps, and rentals for pontoons, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards operating from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Lake Darling State Park offers a 302-acre lake with fishing for bass, catfish, and bluegill. On land, over seven miles of multi-use trails wind through the wooded valleys and restored prairie at Lake Macbride, and Lake Darling adds wetland habitat and a trail through timber to an 1800s cemetery. In town, families visit the Kalona Historical Village, the cheese factory, and the produce auction. The Amana Colonies, Iowa City, and the University of Iowa campus are all within a short drive for a rest-day off the campground.

The practical camping season in southeast Iowa runs from April through late October. Lake Macbride State Park accepts campground reservations from April 1 through November 15 and is closed November 16 through March 31. Lake Darling State Park's main campground follows a similar rhythm, with peak-season dates from May 1 through October 15 and closure from November 1 through March 31. Late May through early September is the busy stretch. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill quickly, and boat rentals at Lake Macbride only operate between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Water hydrants, shower buildings, and dump stations at Iowa state parks are generally turned on by May 1 and shut down around mid-October, so shoulder-season campers may find modern facilities unavailable. Fall brings cooler nights, lighter crowds, and hardwood color through October. Winter camping is limited to year-round cabins and a few private options.

Expect a mix of modern and rustic. The modern loop at Lake Macbride has standard electric and full-hookup sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service, water and sewer at select sites, a shower building, flush restrooms, and a trailer dump station, and it accommodates RVs up to about 60 feet. The southern unit at Lake Macbride is tent-only in a heavily wooded setting. Lake Darling offers full-hookup, standard electric, and non-electric sites with modern shower and restroom facilities, a playground, and a dump station. Cell service is generally usable across the region on major carriers, though it dips inside wooded loops. Emerald ash borer is present in Iowa, so campers should buy firewood locally and burn it on site rather than transporting it. Mosquitoes are active in summer near the lakes, and thunderstorms can build quickly during June and July, so tie down awnings before leaving the site.
