Campgrounds and RV parks near Norwalk, IA

Outdoor activity centers on the Raccoon River valley. At Walnut Woods State Park, visitors can hike more than two miles of trails through wooded bottomland along the river, and fish from the bank or launch a canoe from the boat ramp on the west end of the park. The Great Western Trail, three miles from the park, links Des Moines and Martensdale along a paved 16.5 mile path, a good pick for families with bikes. Birders should note that more than 90 bird species have been recorded in the park, and a bird blind observation station sits near the Purple Martin Water Resource Area. For kid-focused days, Adventureland Campground puts the theme park and waterpark within walking distance, and Cutty's Des Moines Camping Club offers pools, playgrounds, mini golf, and organized events for members and their guests.

Central Iowa has a humid continental climate with sharp seasonal swings. Summers are warm and fairly wet with significant precipitation, and winters are cold and snowy while also being the driest season. Peak camping runs from late spring through early fall, and Iowa DNR treats May 1 through October 15 as peak season across the state park system, with off-peak windows on either side. Summer brings the highest demand and the highest heat. Heat index values well above 100 are common in central and southern Iowa, so shaded sites and hookups with reliable air conditioning matter. Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and occasional tornado watches are common from late spring through midsummer, and river-adjacent sites at Walnut Woods can flood because the park elevation is not much higher than the normal river level, so water levels change constantly. Fall brings cooler nights and fewer bugs, while winter camping is possible at Walnut Woods, which accepts reservations year-round, though most private resorts scale back operations.

Facilities vary by campground. At Walnut Woods, all campsites include electric hookups, with eight sites offering full water, sewer, and electric connections for RVs. The campground has modern restrooms and a sanitary dump station but no showers, and sites are shaded and level on concrete pads. Private resorts run larger and more amenity-heavy. Cutty's Des Moines Camping Club offers full-hookup sites, pools, a camp store, mini golf, and paddle boats, and pull-through sites are typically long enough to fit larger rigs. A few practical notes: expect summer humidity and mosquitoes near the river, plan for possible severe weather, and because emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 Iowa counties, buy firewood locally near the park and burn it all during the stay rather than hauling it in.
