Campgrounds and RV parks near Pella, IA

Lake Red Rock drives most on-water recreation. The park is located on Lake Red Rock, Iowa's largest body of water, and offers ample opportunity for boating and fishing, and the 13-mile multi-use trail system passes through woodland and prairie, with trails suitable for horseback riding, mountain biking, and cross country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. Anglers heading to Rock Creek State Park can target crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye and channel catfish. In town, Pella is known for its Dutch heritage and hosts an annual Tulip Festival each May. Motorsports fans have two nearby draws: Knoxville is home to the Knoxville Raceway and Newton is home to the Iowa Speedway, both of which hold a number of racing events throughout the year. Families staying at the Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey also have access to on-site amenities including a playground and recreation areas.

Iowa state park campgrounds around Pella follow a defined season. The Elk Rock campground is closed January 1 through March 31, runs off-peak in April, peak from May 1 through October 15, off-peak through October 31, then closes again November 1 through December 31. Rock Creek follows a similar pattern, closed January through March, off-peak in April, peak May 1 through October 15, off-peak through November 15, then closed for the remainder of the year. Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends fill quickly at state park sites, especially around the Tulip Festival in May, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and race weekends at Iowa Speedway and Knoxville Raceway. Weekdays and shoulder-season trips in late April, September, and October offer cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and fall color along the lake trails. Winter camping is limited. Private parks like the Newton / Des Moines East KOA Journey and Kellogg RV Park stay open, and some Corps of Engineers areas around Lake Red Rock remain open year-round, but park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by mid April, and start closing them down around mid-October depending upon the weather.

Expect a mix of gravel pull-throughs, back-in sites, and shaded lakeside pads. Iowa state park campgrounds typically offer both electric and non-electric sites; at Elk Rock, the nonequestrian campground has both electric and non-electric sites, with a modern shower building, trailer dumping station, and a self-dispensing firewood machine. Individual water hookups are uncommon at state and Corps sites, so fill fresh-water tanks before arrival. Cell service is generally reliable in Pella, Newton, and Knoxville, and adequate but spottier around Lake Red Rock. Summer brings warm, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and mosquitoes near the water. Bring bug spray, sun protection, and leveling blocks; some lakeside sites slope toward the shore. Pets must be kept on a leash not to exceed 6 feet in length at Iowa state parks. Quiet hours are enforced, and generators are typically restricted to daytime hours.
