Campgrounds and RV parks near Pomeroy, IA

Water activity centers on Black Hawk Lake, a 957-acre natural lake open to boating and fishing with no motor-size restriction, along with a universally accessible fishing pier and lakeshore access for channel catfish, bluegill, and sunfish. The park also has a 1.6-mile Stubb Severson Nature Trail and a disc golf course near the campground. At Dolliver Memorial State Park, nearly six miles of trails wind through the Copperas Beds, sandstone formations that tower about 100 feet above Prairie Creek, and Boneyard Hollow, a box canyon with rocky streams and cliff walls. The park has a boat ramp on the Des Moines River suited to canoeing and fishing. In West Bend, the Grotto of the Redemption is a composite of nine grottos portraying scenes from the life of Christ, admission is free, and it is a short walk from the RV park.

The Iowa state-park camping season runs on a defined calendar. Iowa DNR campgrounds at both Black Hawk State Park and Dolliver Memorial State Park are closed from November 1 through March 31, with an off-peak shoulder in April and again from October 16 through October 31, and a peak season from May 1 through October 15. Spring brings mud, rising rivers, and cool nights. Park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, so April campers should not count on modern facilities. Summer is the busiest window: warm, humid, and prone to thunderstorms, with the heaviest rainfall of the year falling in June. Fall is the most comfortable stretch for hiking at Dolliver, with cooler daytime highs and fewer bugs, though shower buildings and dump stations typically close around mid-October depending on weather. Winter closes state-park campgrounds entirely, but private and shrine-adjacent parks such as The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park operate outside the DNR calendar. Confirm operating dates directly with each campground before booking a shoulder-season trip.

Expect a mix of small-town Iowa and rural farmland. Roads are generally flat and RV-friendly, but county highways can be narrow, and gravel is common on the last stretch into some parks. Cell service is a real consideration: coverage inside the Des Moines River Valley at Dolliver is limited or absent across carriers, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival. State-park sites at Black Hawk and Dolliver offer modern restrooms, hot showers, and a trailer dump station. The Dolliver campground overlooks the Des Moines River with electric sites, and turns can be tight for larger rigs. The Grotto RV Park offers 30- and 50-amp electric with fresh water and a dump station on site, and accommodates rigs up to about 40 feet. Firewood should be purchased locally to slow the spread of forest pests, and pets must be leashed. Plan grocery and fuel stops in Fort Dodge, Storm Lake, or Lake View.
