Camping near Raymond, Iowa
Raymond is a small community in Black Hawk County, immediately northeast of Waterloo and about ten minutes from Cedar Falls. RV travelers use it as a base for the Cedar Valley, a metro area of roughly 170,000 people wrapped around the Cedar River, with a linked trail network, four lakes at George Wyth State Park, and easy interstate access via U.S. 20 and U.S. 218.
Campground options run from full-hookup resorts to a reservable state park. Waterloo/Lost Island KOA Resort sits near Lost Island Waterpark south of Waterloo, with pull-through and back-in RV sites, cabins, and a swim lake. George Wyth State Park, between Waterloo and Cedar Falls, offers electric and non-electric sites inside an urban wildlife sanctuary on the Cedar River.
For quieter stays, Morwood Campground and Resort near Hazleton runs a family-owned property in Amish country, while Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground near Oelwein and BEYONDER Getaway at Lazy Acres near Center Point round out the nearby full-hookup options within roughly an hour's drive.
Things to do around Raymond
The Cedar Valley trail system is the main draw for active RV families. George Wyth State Park offers more than three miles of paved, multi-use trails plus ten miles of soft-surface trails, all linked to a 100-mile regional trail network that connects Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Cyclists can ride from the campground to parks, shopping districts, and neighborhoods in the metro area.
Water activities center on the park's four lakes. Brinker Lake, George Wyth Lake, Fisher Lake, and Alice Wyth Lake support fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing, with a swim beach on George Wyth Lake. Anglers target crappie, bluegill, walleye, northern pike, bass, and channel catfish.
For kids, Lost Island Waterpark and the adjacent theme park sit near the KOA. Downtown Waterloo adds the Grout Museum District, the Phelps Youth Pavilion, and the John Deere Tractor and Engine Museum.

The camping season in this part of Iowa is short and clearly defined. At George Wyth State Park, peak season runs May 1 through October 15 and the campground is 100 percent reservable, with no first-come, first-served sites. The campground is closed January 1 through March 31 and again from November 1 through December 31, so winter RV camping in the immediate area is limited to private parks with heated facilities.
Private campgrounds follow a similar arc. Morwood Campground and Resort typically runs a spring-to-fall season, and most nearby resorts operate on comparable windows. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially around Lost Island Waterpark and any Cedar Valley race or festival weekend.
Shoulder seasons favor cyclists and anglers. Late April through May brings green-up and steady rain, while September and early October deliver cool nights, fall color along the Cedar River, and easier site availability. Severe thunderstorms and tornado watches are most common from April through July.
How to book near Raymond
State park sites use the Iowa DNR reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Iowa allows campsite reservations up to 3 months in advance of the arrival date, so popular summer weekends at George Wyth State Park open quickly and should be booked as soon as the window opens. The campground is 100 percent reservable and a reservation is required.
Private parks book directly. Waterloo/Lost Island KOA Resort takes reservations through koa.com, and Morwood Campground and Resort, Lakeshore RV Resort and Campground, and BEYONDER Getaway at Lazy Acres each accept online bookings through their own sites.
Check rig-length limits and hookup type before booking. George Wyth has 47 electric sites with 20/30/50 amp hookups, 13 non-electric sites, and 6 tent-only sites, while the KOA and Morwood offer full hookups suitable for larger rigs.
What to expect on-site
Expect Midwest-standard facilities and gravel or grass pads. Campsites at George Wyth feature picnic tables and fire rings, with modern restrooms, showers, a dump station, and water hydrants distributed throughout the campground. Cell coverage across the Cedar Valley is generally strong on major carriers.
Private resorts add family amenities. The KOA offers a swim lake, playground, and on-site food, with RV sites carrying 50 amp service, water, and sewer. Morwood adds a heated pool and mini-golf.
A few practical notes: firewood should be sourced locally because emerald ash borer has been confirmed in all 99 Iowa counties, quiet hours are enforced at most private parks, and pets are welcome on leash. Summer thunderstorms move through quickly, and shower houses often double as informal storm shelters since designated storm shelters are not provided at George Wyth.
