Campgrounds and RV parks near Wellman, IA

The Kalona Amish community, a short drive south of Wellman, is the main regional draw, with bakeries, quilt shops, and a historical village. The Amana Colonies to the north offer seven historic villages featuring restaurants, shops, museums, and period architecture, making them an easy day trip from any nearby campground. Outdoor activities center on the region's lakes and rivers. Lake Macbride and the Coralville Reservoir, both near Solon, add boating and larger beaches. Families staying at BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow can use on-site amenities without leaving the property. Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa, adds museums, a walkable downtown, and college sports weekends within a 30-minute drive.

The main camping season in southeast Iowa runs from spring through mid-fall. Lake Darling State Park's campground is closed January through March, off-peak in April, peak from May 1 to October 15, off-peak from October 16 to October 31, and closed November 1 through December 31. Park staff generally try to have water on and shower buildings and dump stations open by May 1, and start closing them around mid-October depending on weather. Private parks follow a similar rhythm. Amana Colonies RV Park is open April 1 through November 1, and Cam lo-Dis-E-Ca opens between March 1 and March 15 and closes between November 1 and November 15 each year. BEYONDER Getaway at Sleepy Hollow stays open year-round, but off-season amenities are limited. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially around Amana Colonies events, Iowa Hawkeye home football weekends, and July 4. Fall brings comfortable days, thinner crowds, and color through the Iowa River valley. Winter camping is possible only at select private parks, and freezing temperatures make water hookups unreliable.

Sites in this part of Iowa are generally level, grass or gravel, and sized for typical Class C, travel trailer, and fifth wheel rigs. Amana Colonies RV Park is built for big rigs, with over 450 campsites and many full-hookup, 50-amp accommodations on 75-foot sites. Lake Darling State Park offers full-hookup, electric, and non-electric sites with modern shower and restroom facilities, a playground, and a dump station. Expect humid summer days, evening thunderstorms, and mosquitoes near lakes and wooded sites. Bring bug spray, leveling blocks for older county sites, and a surge protector. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed across Iowa counties, so buy firewood locally near the park and burn it all during the stay. Pet rules are standard: leashed at all times, not left unattended, and cleaned up after.
