Campgrounds near Flatwoods, Kentucky
Flatwoods sits in Greenup County in northeastern Kentucky, inside the Huntington-Ashland metropolitan area along the Ohio River. The town works well as a base for RV travelers because the surrounding region combines river camping, a state resort park, and a full-service KOA within a short drive, and Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia all meet at the nearby tri-state line.
The closest options sit along the Ohio River and the Little Sandy River. Little Bear Island Campground occupies an actual island on the Little Sandy near Greenup, with 50-amp electric and water sites, a dump station, and a boat launch. Holiday Point Marina and Campground is on the Ohio River with RV sites, transient slips, and a swimming pool. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday in Argillite is the area's largest full-hookup RV park. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, about 20 minutes inland, anchors the public-land option with a lakeside campground, lodge, and trails. Valley Breeze RV Campground in Grayson rounds out the list with a smaller, quieter setting.
Things to do near Flatwoods
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is the main outdoor draw: a 225-acre lake for fishing, paddling, and boating, plus a lakeside pool with a spiraling waterslide, hiking trails through wooded ridges, and the fieldstone Jesse Stuart Lodge, which honors the Kentucky poet laureate and includes a reading room with his works. The Ohio River corridor adds boating, barge-watching, and riverside parks in Ashland and Greenup. Families staying at Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday have on-site miniature golf, a swimming pool, a fishing pond, a jumping pad, and two playgrounds without leaving the campground. Day trips reach the Huntington Museum of Art, Pullman Square in Huntington, and Camden Park, the oldest amusement park in West Virginia. The Country Music Highway (US 23) runs south through the region for a scenic drive.

Flatwoods has a humid subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and short, cold, wet winters. Camping season effectively runs April through October, matching the operating window of Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, which closes November 1 and reopens April 1. Little Bear Island Campground typically operates May 1 through October 31.
Spring is wet, with frequent rain that can soften river-adjacent sites at Little Bear Island and Holiday Point Marina, and the dirt access road to Little Bear Island can become muddy. Summer is peak season and also the wettest stretch on average, with warm, humid days, organized activities at the state park, and the highest booking pressure on weekends and holidays. Fall trends drier, with cooler nights and good color through the hardwood ridges. Year-round options are limited; Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday is the main private park that stays open through winter, and Kentucky State Parks generally caution that water service may not be available at campgrounds during freezing months.
How to book campgrounds near Flatwoods
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is booked through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica or by phone, generally up to a year in advance and at least one day before arrival, with some sites held back for first-come, first-served walk-ins. Maximum occupancy is eight people per site, with a limit of two units that may be one camper plus one tent. When choosing a site, check the site notes, because some pads have steep grades that do not suit big rigs. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday currently does not accept online reservations and asks guests to call the campground directly. Little Bear Island Campground, Holiday Point Marina and Campground, and Valley Breeze RV Campground take direct bookings; summer weekends and holiday weeks fill earliest, so reserve well ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of riverside private parks and one inland state park, all set in rolling Appalachian foothills. Roads into the campgrounds are paved or well-maintained gravel, though the dirt road to Little Bear Island can hold water after rain. Site spacing varies: Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday has spacious 50-amp pull-throughs with full hookups suitable for big rigs with slides, while sites at Greenbo Lake are positioned closer together and include a mix of electric-and-water utility sites and primitive sites. Cell coverage is generally available at developed campgrounds, with Verizon often stronger than AT&T at Greenbo. The KOA offers free Wi-Fi, and Greenbo has Wi-Fi at limited speeds. Pets are allowed at all five campgrounds on leash. Mosquitoes and ticks are common in summer near the rivers and lake, so plan accordingly.

Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see exactly which hosts offer it and what their fees are. Pro tip: ask about a 'set up and pack down' package so you don't lift a finger.

Spring brings highs in the mid-60s to upper-70s and blooming dogwoods through the Appalachian foothills; summer (June to August) settles into the mid-80s with warm, humid evenings perfect for lakeside campfires at Greenbo. Fall is arguably the best of all, with crisp 60s and brilliant red and gold foliage on the hills above the Ohio River. Pro tip: aim for the second and third weeks of October to catch peak leaf color along KY-1 and the Country Music Highway (US-23).
weather.gov/jkl/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Flatwoods?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Flatwoods is genuinely manageable, and your host is your secret weapon. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, generator, and the dump process. The roads around Flatwoods are forgiving for beginners: US-23 along the Ohio River is wide and flat, and I-64 west toward Lexington has long, gentle grades. Avoid the narrow back roads up into Greenup County's hollows until you're comfortable. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet for your first trip, and book delivery to Greenbo Lake so the only driving you do is sightseeing.
drive.ky.gov/driver-licensing/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Flatwoods, KY includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on US-23, a battery dies at Greenbo Lake, or the generator quits at Carter Caves, one phone call gets help dispatched. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip for anything non-mechanical. Your host is usually the fastest first call for quirky vehicle-specific questions like how to turn on the awning light, and most respond within minutes. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host contact in your phone before leaving the driveway, since cell service can get spotty in the wooded hollows east of Grayson.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Flatwoods?
Flatwoods is a fantastic launchpad for an RV road trip thanks to its position at the Kentucky-Ohio-West Virginia tri-state crossroads. Top routes include: Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Park (about 110 miles southwest, perfect for a 2-night trip), Cumberland Falls 'Niagara of the South' (around 200 miles south), the New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia (140 miles east), Mammoth Cave National Park (250 miles southwest), and the Great Smoky Mountains (about 300 miles south). Cross-state travel inside the US is allowed on RVezy bookings, but travel into Mexico is not permitted. nps.gov/neri/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Flatwoods RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but Kentucky is friendlier to your wallet than most states. Kentucky's average gas price runs notably below the national average most of the year, with prices typically among the cheapest 10 to 15 states. Expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg) for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, and 16 to 20 mpg for a Class B campervan or truck towing a travel trailer. For a 300-mile loop from Flatwoods to Red River Gorge and back, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a midsize Class C. Pro tip: fuel up at the Marathon and Speedway stations along US-23 in Ashland before heading into the hills, where prices climb.
fueleconomy.gov/feg/gasprices/states/KY.shtmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near Flatwoods?
Kentucky State Parks open reservations up to 12 months in advance through the ReserveAmerica system, and for popular summer weekends at Greenbo Lake and Carter Caves you'll want to book 3 to 6 months out. Weekdays and shoulder-season weekends are much easier, often available 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day) require longer minimum stays at most parks and sell out earliest. KOA campgrounds and private parks like Ashland/Huntington West KOA Holiday usually have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: state park sites have a 1-night minimum on weekdays and a 2-night minimum on peak weekends, so plan your arrival day accordingly.
kentuckystateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/greenbo-lake-state-resort-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=KY&parkId=91906What are driving conditions like around Flatwoods?
Driving around Flatwoods is mostly easygoing for RVs. US-23 (the Country Music Highway) and I-64 are the two main arteries: both are well-maintained, four-lane, and have generous shoulders. Local terrain is rolling Appalachian foothills, so expect some moderate grades on KY-1 heading to Greenbo Lake and on backroads into Carter and Lawrence Counties. Watch for winter ice from December through February and occasional summer thunderstorms that can bring quick downpours. Coal trucks and CSX rail crossings are common around the Ashland industrial corridor, so allow extra braking distance. Pro tip: avoid the narrow 13th Street viaduct in downtown Ashland in tall rigs and stay on US-23 for the safest path along the Ohio River.

For free dump stations and water fills, you'll find options at Greenbo and at travel plazas along I-64. Pro tip: Kentucky State Parks prohibit bringing firewood from outside the state due to the Emerald Ash Borer, so buy it on-site (usually $5 to $8 a bundle).

Many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid power, while some offer WiFi boosters or Starlink. Filter by 'Sleeps' count to match your group and check each listing's amenity list for specifics. Pro tip: ask the host about pack-in extras like camp chairs, a propane fire pit, bedding, or kitchenware, since many include these free or for a small add-on.
kentuckytourism.com/trip-planning/where-to-stay/campgrounds-and-rv-parksWhat add-ons and pickup logistics should I plan for my Flatwoods RV rental?

Dropoff times are typically firm, so plan to return with a full fuel tank and empty tanks unless your host offers a dump service add-on. Pro tip: book a stocked and ready rental so you arrive at Greenbo Lake with nothing to set up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Flatwoods%2C%20KentuckyHow does payment and the security deposit work on my Flatwoods RV rental?
Payment for your RV rental in Flatwoods, KY is handled entirely through RVezy with a major credit or debit card, keeping everything secure and traceable. You will pay the rental total, taxes, protection plan, and any add-ons at booking. A refundable security deposit is collected separately from the booking payment and is released after your trip ends, assuming no damage, missing items, or policy violations like smoking. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the RV interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels noted at pickup, since refueling fees are the most common cause of deposit deductions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Flatwoods RV rental across the Ohio River into Ohio or West Virginia?
Yes, multi-state RV trips from Flatwoods are not only allowed but encouraged, since you are literally minutes from two state lines. The 13th Street Bridge into Ohio and the US-23 routes to Huntington, West Virginia put New River Gorge National Park (140 miles), Hocking Hills State Park (130 miles), and the Ohio River Scenic Byway easily within reach. Cross-border travel within the United States is covered under your booking. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: mention your multi-state route to your host during booking so they can confirm any preferences and recommend favorite stops along the way.
