Campgrounds and RV parks near Raceland, KY

Water recreation drives most trips. Greenbo Lake is the region's most popular fishing water, with boating on the lake, a lakeside swimming pool with a spiraling waterslide, and hiking through the surrounding forest. The Ohio River and Little Sandy River add paddling, bank fishing, and boat-launch access closer to town. Families staying at private parks have on-site options as well. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday offers a 24-hour laundry, a campground store, two covered picnic pavilions, two playgrounds, miniature golf, a large swimming pool, a fishing pond, and hiking areas, with in-season theme weekends that include bonfires, crafts, cornhole competitions, event breakfasts, and ice cream socials. Day trips from Raceland reach downtown Ashland, Huntington's riverfront and museums, and the Country Music Highway (US-23) heading south into eastern Kentucky.

Northeastern Kentucky has four distinct seasons. Summers in the Raceland area are warm and humid, winters are short and cold with occasional snow, and skies are partly cloudy year round. Peak camping runs from late spring through early fall, with the highest occupancy in June, July, and August when state-park loops and KOA activities are in full swing. Spring brings the region's wettest stretch and green-up on the trails, but river-adjacent sites can turn muddy after heavy rain. Dirt access roads at riverside campgrounds can become slick during wet conditions, which is worth planning around in March and April. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Appalachian foothills, and is often the most comfortable window for RV travel. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks, but expect limits on services. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly for available resources in those months.

Site styles vary widely. State-park loops at Greenbo Lake mix primitive tent sites with electric-and-water and full-hookup pads, and some sites have steep grades that are not suitable for big rigs, so it pays to review site details when booking. The park itself carries a 36-room lodge, a swimming pool with slides, two tennis courts, an 18-hole miniature golf course, an amphitheater, and a scuba refuge area. Private parks lean toward full-hookup RV camping. Sites at Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday are full hookup and slide-out friendly with cable available at every site, and big-rig pull-throughs are often set without interfering trees. River-side spots such as Little Bear Island Campground and Holiday Point Marina and Campground run more rustic, with grassy pads and water frontage rather than paved streets. Cell coverage is generally solid along the I-64 corridor and thinner in the hills around Greenbo Lake. Bring bug spray for summer riverside stays.
