Campgrounds and RV parks near Wurtland, KY

Water activities anchor most trips. Greenbo Lake is stocked annually with trout and known for bass, bluegill, and crappie, with a boat dock, marina, and lakeside swimming pool with a waterslide at the resort park. The Ohio River and Little Sandy River add barge-watching, kayaking, and bank fishing, with a boat launch on-site at Little Bear Island Campground. On land, families can hike wooded trails around Greenbo Lake and the adjacent Jesse Stuart State Nature Preserve, or use the pool and other family amenities at the Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday. Day trips reach Ashland's riverfront, historic downtown Greenup, and Huntington, West Virginia across the river, along with covered bridges and the Country Music Highway corridor along US-23.

Late spring through early fall is the core RV season around Wurtland. Little Bear Island Campground typically operates from May through October, while smaller riverfront parks tend to follow a similar warm-season schedule. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park's campground is generally usable spring through late fall, though Kentucky State Parks warns that water and other resources cannot be guaranteed during months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers arriving in the shoulder season should contact the park directly to confirm hookups. Summer brings warm, humid weather, peak lake use, and organized activities at the KOA and Greenbo. July is typically the wettest month, so plan for afternoon thunderstorms. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Appalachian foothills, making September and October popular for hiking-focused trips. Winter is short but cold, with occasional snow. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday tends to offer the most reliable cold-season availability in the area, while most smaller parks close or run limited service.

Expect a mix of full-hookup RV pads, partial-hookup sites, and primitive tent spots across the area. The Ashland / Huntington West KOA offers full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, big-rig pull-throughs, a pool, laundry, and a store. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park has a 63-site campground with a mix of primitive, electric-and-water, and full-hookup sites, a dump station, showers, and a camp host, and its Kentucky State Park rules cap occupancy at eight per site and prohibit firewood brought in from outside Kentucky. Little Bear Island Campground sits on an island in the Little Sandy River, with shaded, grassy sites, 30- and 50-amp service, a dump station, and a boat launch. The access road is unpaved and can get muddy after heavy rain, so check conditions before towing in. Cell coverage is generally reliable near I-64 and thinner in river-valley pockets.
