Campgrounds near Accokeek, Maryland
Accokeek sits on the Maryland side of the Potomac River in southern Prince George's County, about a half-hour drive south of Washington, DC. The area works well as an RV base for families who want river access, forested state land, and easy reach to the capital. Most campgrounds within an hour serve trips built around the Potomac, Mattawoman Creek, and the piedmont forests of southern Maryland and northern Virginia.
Smallwood State Park, on Mattawoman Creek off the Potomac, offers a small campground with electric and water hookups plus a handful of cabins. Cedarville State Forest runs a single-loop campground with 27 sites across forested terrain in Charles County, with a 35-foot RV length limit; inner-loop sites have electric hookups, and outer sites are primitive.
Goose Bay Marina and Campground provides 110 shaded waterfront campsites on the Port Tobacco River near its confluence with the Potomac, with 30/50-amp electric and water. Aqua Land Campground sits farther south near the Route 301 Potomac River crossing. Across the river in Virginia, Prince William Forest RV Campground offers full hookups inside Prince William Forest Park.
Things to do near Accokeek
Water is the main draw. Boating, kayaking, paddling, and fishing on Mattawoman Creek and the Potomac are the core activities at Smallwood State Park and Goose Bay Marina, and both have boat ramps on site. Piscataway Park, adjacent to Accokeek, offers riverfront trails and views across to Mount Vernon.
Hiking is the other pull. Prince William Forest Park preserves roughly 15,000 acres of the Quantico Creek watershed, one of the largest piedmont forest ecosystems in the region, with 37 miles of foot trails and 21 miles of paved roads open to bikes. Cedarville State Forest carries roughly 19 miles of trails through pines and wetlands, open to foot, bike, and horse traffic.
For day trips, downtown Washington, the National Mall museums, Mount Vernon, and the National Museum of the Marine Corps near Triangle, Virginia are all within about an hour of most sites.

The camping season in this part of the mid-Atlantic runs roughly April through October at public campgrounds, with a shoulder into November at some parks. Cedarville State Forest's campground is open April through October, with reservations by phone Monday through Friday or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Oak Ridge Campground in Prince William Forest Park is open March through November, while the concessionaire-run Prince William Forest RV Campground operates on its own schedule.
From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, Maryland state park campgrounds require a two-night minimum stay, and holiday weekends require a three-night minimum. Campers are limited to 14 cumulative nights in Maryland State Park campgrounds during any 21-day period, then must vacate for at least seven consecutive days before returning.
Summer is peak. Holiday weekends around July 4 and Labor Day book out quickly, especially the small loop at Smallwood. Fall brings comfortable temperatures and lighter crowds; winter closes most public campgrounds and reduces private-park amenities.

Great host will consider using though with would select a smaller less luxurious vehicle. Was an excellent first-time experience.

The RV was everything we hoped for, it was spacious and well maintained. Kimberly was wonderful to work with, very responsive. Thank you for allowing us to rent your beautiful RV.

Good rental experience with this RV and also with the host, Oscar. Had a couple of Qs during the trip, and he responded quickly. Nice little travel trailer, fully stocked. Oscar provides an anti-sway trailer hitch, which increases travel & towing safety.
William P. - Jun 2025
Oscar was great! He walked me through everything and helped me get the trailer connected to the truck. The trailer was clean and everything we ran was functional (did not use the AC). Upon return the family was very responsive when I called when I dropped off the trailer. I would definitely rent from Oscar and family again!

How to book near Accokeek
Maryland state parks use one central system. Reservations at Smallwood State Park can be made by calling 1-888-432-CAMP (2267) Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov. The same phone number and website handle Cedarville State Forest.
Prince William Forest Park uses the federal system. Reservations for Oak Ridge Campground can be made up to six months in advance through recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. The Prince William Forest RV Campground concessionaire books separately through its own channels.
Private parks such as Goose Bay Marina and Campground and Aqua Land Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends, book several weeks ahead at minimum.
What to expect on site
Expect small, wooded loops rather than large resort layouts. Smallwood has about 15 RV and tent campsites under a hardwood canopy, each with electric hookups, a picnic table, a lantern post, and a fire ring with grill. Sites accommodate RVs up to about 30 feet, and amenities include a bathhouse with hot showers and a dump station.
Cedarville sits close enough to Joint Base Andrews that aircraft noise can be a regular presence during the day. RV length limits matter here: at Oak Ridge, RVs may not exceed 32 feet, and trailers and fifth wheels are limited to 26 feet. Oak Ridge has flush toilets and drinking water but no hookups; only Loop B has showers.
Cell service is generally reliable near Accokeek and thins out inside forested loops. Bring bug spray in summer, and follow local firewood rules, which prohibit importing personal firewood into Maryland DNR lands.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Accokeek, MD
What does it cost to rent an RV in Accokeek, MD, and how can I save?
An RV rental in Accokeek is often more affordable than booking multiple D.C. hotels for the family. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes generally run $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches sit higher. Cheap RV rental Accokeek options usually appear midweek and during the shoulder months of late March, April, and October. To stretch your budget, filter for Instant Book listings, look for hosts who include generator hours, and avoid Cherry Blossom weekends in late March and early April when demand peaks across the National Capital region.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Accokeek%2C%20MarylandDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Accokeek?
Great news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need for the vast majority of RVs available in Accokeek. Maryland does not require a special class of license for non-commercial recreational vehicles that drivers use for personal travel, and almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on RVezy is well within standard limits. RVezy also requires renters to be 25 or older and verifies your ID inside the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto club before you fly in, and you're set to explore the Potomac.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside support is included with my Accokeek RV rental?
You'll travel with peace of mind. Every RV rental in Accokeek booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV, and you choose your coverage level during checkout so you can dial it up for extra confidence on busy stretches like the Capital Beltway (I-495) or MD-210 toward Indian Head. If you get a flat near Piscataway Park or need a jump start at a campground, one phone call gets help dispatched. Full details, including what's covered, live on the RVezy Insurance and Protection page.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Accokeek RV trip?
Booking is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy across the platform, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates without second-guessing. Refund eligibility after that window depends on how far out your trip start date is, with additional protections in qualifying situations. Full details are on the RVezy Help Center, but the headline is simple: you don't need to figure out the policy listing-by-listing. Book the rig you love and start planning your Potomac itinerary with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Accokeek?
Absolutely, and Accokeek is a wonderful spot to travel with a four-legged copilot. Filter for pet-friendly RV rental Accokeek listings on RVezy and you'll find plenty of hosts who welcome dogs (some welcome cats too). Piscataway Park allows leashed pets on its trails, and Cedarville State Forest in nearby Brandywine is pet-friendly with shaded sites and a bathhouse. Greenbelt Park and Pohick Bay Regional Park across the river in Virginia also welcome leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes, then pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and proof of vaccinations for campground check-in.
nps.gov/pisc/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Accokeek?
Yes, and RV delivery in Accokeek is one of the best moves for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts in the D.C. metro area will tow or drive the RV to your chosen campground, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you can fly into Reagan National (DCA) or BWI, get a ride to your campsite at Cedarville State Forest, Greenbelt Park, or Cherry Hill Park in College Park, and step into a fully set-up rig. Look for the Delivery filter on RVezy, then message the host with your campsite number. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so booking a closer campground keeps costs down.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/southern/Cedarville.aspxHow far can I drive, and what mileage policies should I expect?
You have real range from Accokeek. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, and many offer generous daily allowances or even an RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. From Accokeek you're about 20 miles south of downtown Washington, D.C., roughly 45 miles to Annapolis on the Chesapeake Bay, around 50 miles to Baltimore's Inner Harbor, about 140 miles to Ocean City beaches, and roughly 110 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. Most weekend renters stay well under a 100-mile-per-day cap. Pro tip: before booking, message the host with your rough itinerary so they can recommend the right mileage add-on, which is usually cheaper bundled than paid as overage at return.
visitmaryland.org/Where are the best campgrounds near Accokeek for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Accokeek include Cedarville State Forest in Brandywine (about 25 minutes south), which offers electric sites on the inner loop, a dump station, and a pet-friendly family-friendly atmosphere. Greenbelt Park, a National Park Service campground about 25 miles north, offers 172 wooded sites year-round with no hookups but flush toilets, showers, and a dump station. Cherry Hill Park in College Park is the closest full-hookup resort to D.C., with pools, a splash pad, and a shuttle into the city. Pohick Bay Regional Park sits just across the Potomac in Lorton, Virginia for waterfront RV camping.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/campground.htmWhen is the best time of year for an Accokeek RV trip?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV camping in Accokeek. From mid-April through May, expect daytime highs in the 65 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit range, blooming dogwoods, and the cherry blossoms peaking across the Potomac. September and October bring crisp 60 to 75 degree days, lower humidity, and beautiful foliage along Bryan Point Road into Piscataway Park. Summers (June to August) are hot and humid with highs near 90 degrees Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so plan for AC and shaded sites. Winter camping is possible at year-round spots like Greenbelt Park, but pack for nights that can dip into the 20s. Insider tip: book your RV rental Maryland trip for the last two weeks of October for the best weather-to-crowd ratio.
weather.gov/lwx/climateI've never driven an RV before. How does first-time renting work?
You're going to be fine, and you won't be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering propane, water, awnings, slide-outs, the generator, and how to dump tanks. First time renting an RV near Accokeek? Choose a Class B campervan or a 24 to 28 foot Class C, which drives much like a large van and fits comfortably on MD-210 (Indian Head Highway) and the Capital Beltway. Hosts answer questions by message before, during, and after your trip, and RVezy support is available 24/7. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot lap with the host before you leave so backing up and turning feel natural before you hit traffic.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is one phone call away. Every Accokeek RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common headaches like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows. Your host is also a great first contact for quirks specific to their rig, since they know their RV best. Cell service is strong throughout Prince George's County, along MD-210, and at Piscataway Park, so reaching support is easy. Pro tip: snap photos or a short video of the fuse panel, water pump switch, and propane shutoff during your walkthrough. A two-minute reference video on your phone solves most minor issues before you ever need to dial.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Accokeek RV rental on a road trip out of state?
Yes, and you're perfectly positioned for an epic RV road trip from Accokeek. Most RVezy hosts allow interstate travel across the U.S., with popular routes including Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive (about 100 miles west), Assateague Island National Seashore for wild ponies on the beach (about 150 miles east), Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (about 90 miles north), and the Outer Banks of North Carolina (around 280 miles south). Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and insurance confirmation, so message before booking. Travel into Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan doesn't extend there. Always share your itinerary with the host so mileage and any cross-border paperwork are squared away upfront.
nps.gov/shen/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on an Accokeek RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and big Class A coaches run 6 to 10 mpg. Maryland gas prices generally track slightly above the national average, and there are convenient stations along MD-210, US-301, and the Capital Beltway. For a typical 3-day, 250-mile loop from Accokeek to Cedarville State Forest and over to Annapolis, budget roughly $90 to $160 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Waldorf or La Plata on the way south, where prices often beat the closer-in suburbs.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campground near Accokeek?
Book sooner rather than later, especially for peak weekends. Maryland State Parks like Cedarville State Forest take reservations through the Maryland Park Service reservation system, and summer holiday weekends often require a multi-night minimum. Greenbelt Park's National Park Service campground takes reservations through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window, which fills fast for cherry blossom season and any weekend with a big D.C. event. Cherry Hill Park in College Park books directly on its website and sells out months ahead for July 4th. Insider tip: aim for 60 to 90 days out for spring and fall, and check Recreation.gov on weekday mornings for fresh cancellations.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233056What are local driving conditions like around Accokeek?
Accokeek itself is calm, rural-suburban driving, which makes it a friendly home base for a campervan rental Accokeek trip. MD-210 (Indian Head Highway) is the main artery and a straight, easy four-lane road most of the way into D.C. Where you'll want to pay attention: the Capital Beltway (I-495), I-295, and the Woodrow Wilson Bridge see heavy rush-hour traffic from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., so plan departures around those windows. Avoid driving large Class A rigs into downtown D.C., where height clearances on parkways like Rock Creek and Baltimore-Washington are tight. Pro tip: use Bryan Point Road into Piscataway Park for a low-stress scenic drive that even nervous RV drivers love.
chart.maryland.gov/What amenities and hookups should I expect at campgrounds near Accokeek?
Expect a nice mix depending on where you stay. Cherry Hill Park in College Park offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, laundry, a dump station, and a camp store. Cedarville State Forest has electric sites with water spigots nearby, a bathhouse with hot showers, and a dump station, while some sites are more primitive. Greenbelt Park is primitive with no hookups but provides flush toilets, showers, drinking water, and a dump station. Pohick Bay Regional Park in Virginia has electric and water sites. Pro tip: most campgrounds around Accokeek have potable water fills near the entrance and a centralized dump station, so plan to top off and dump on arrival or departure day.
nps.gov/gree/planyourvisit/campground.htmWhat's inside the RVs I can rent in Accokeek?
More than you might expect. A typical motorhome rental Accokeek listing includes sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen with a refrigerator, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with a toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and furnace), and dinette or sofa seating with seatbelts for travel. Many rigs also include a TV, a generator for off-grid camping, an awning for shade, and outdoor speakers. Wi-Fi varies; cell signal is reliable across most campgrounds near Accokeek, so a hotspot works well. Each RVezy listing shows exact specs and a sleeps count. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count plus the amenities you actually need, like a generator if you're heading to Greenbelt Park's no-hookup loops.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Accokeek%2C%20MarylandWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts offer for Accokeek rentals?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons on RVezy include linens and bedding packs, kitchen kits, generators with included hours, bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, camping chairs, and extra mileage bundles. Most hosts in the Accokeek area offer flexible pickup windows, and many provide delivery to local campgrounds like Cedarville State Forest, Greenbelt Park, or Cherry Hill Park for a fee that scales with distance. Pickup is typically a 60 to 90 minute appointment that includes a full walkthrough. Pro tip: bundle the linens, kitchen, and generator add-ons up front, because buying them piecemeal usually costs more, and confirm exact pickup time in the host message thread two days before your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Accokeek%2C%20MarylandHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through the RVezy platform, so there's no cash, no Venmo, and no awkward host conversations about money. You'll pay the rental total, taxes, and any add-ons at booking with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold (not a charge) on your card before pickup, and it's released after the trip once the host confirms there's no damage and the RV is returned with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: photograph the interior, exterior, and fuel gauge at pickup and dropoff. Those time-stamped pictures protect you and speed up your deposit release after your Accokeek trip wraps.
