Campgrounds near Bensville, Maryland
Bensville is an unincorporated community in Charles County, Maryland, sitting between the Potomac River and the southern edge of the Washington, D.C. metro area. The location gives RV travelers access to state park campgrounds, private waterfront marinas, and a National Park Service unit in northern Virginia, all within roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Smallwood State Park, located on Mattawoman Creek near Marbury in Charles County, covers 984 acres and includes a marina, boat ramps, picnicking facilities, campsites, cabins, trails, and a nature center. To the east, Cedarville State Forest sits near Brandywine and Waldorf and spans 3,510 acres, with a single family loop that mixes electric and primitive sites.
Private options along the Potomac add hookup capacity that the state parks do not offer. Goose Bay Marina and Campground has 110 shaded campsites on the Potomac equipped with 30 amp and 50 amp electrical service and water, and Aqua Land Campground in Newburg sits next to the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge. Across the river, Prince William Forest RV Campground is billed as Virginia's closest RV campground to Washington, D.C.
Things to do near Bensville
Water access defines most trips in this corridor. Mattawoman Creek at Smallwood State Park draws kayakers and largemouth bass anglers, and the park also preserves the restored home of Revolutionary War general William Smallwood. Goose Bay Marina and Campground and Aqua Land Campground both put boat ramps, fishing piers, and marina services within walking distance of the campsites.
Inland, Cedarville State Forest offers a color-blazed trail network through pine and hardwood forest, a stocked fishing pond, and an equestrian camping area. Hunting is allowed on a portion of the forest, so visitors should be aware of hunting seasons, consider wearing blaze orange, or visit only on Sundays during deer and turkey season.
Across the Potomac, Prince William Forest Park protects Piedmont woodland with hiking, biking, and Civilian Conservation Corps history. Washington, D.C. monuments and museums sit within roughly an hour's drive.

The Maryland state park campgrounds in this area run on a spring-to-fall calendar. Cedarville State Forest's campground is open from April to October, and Smallwood State Park follows a similar seasonal window with youth group sites available April through October. Summer weekends fill quickly at Smallwood, and booking six or more weeks out is common, particularly when fishing tournaments are scheduled.
Minimum stays tighten in peak season. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day there is a two-night minimum stay, and holiday weekends require a three-night minimum stay at Maryland state parks. Private campgrounds like Aqua Land Campground and Goose Bay Marina and Campground operate on their own calendars, though marina services and pools run seasonally.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Fall offers cooler temperatures and foliage color through October. Winter camping is limited mostly to the private Potomac-side parks and the concessionaire-run Prince William Forest RV Campground, which is open year-round and offers heated restrooms.

Good rental experience with this RV and also with the host, Oscar. Had a couple of Qs during the trip, and he responded quickly. Nice little travel trailer, fully stocked. Oscar provides an anti-sway trailer hitch, which increases travel & towing safety.
William P. - Jun 2025
Oscar was great! He walked me through everything and helped me get the trailer connected to the truck. The trailer was clean and everything we ran was functional (did not use the AC). Upon return the family was very responsive when I called when I dropped off the trailer. I would definitely rent from Oscar and family again!

How to book a site
Maryland state park reservations run through a single system. Reservations at Smallwood State Park can be made up to 365 days in advance by calling 1-888-432-CAMP (2267) or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Cedarville State Forest uses the same phone number and website. Campers are limited to 14 cumulative nights of camping in Maryland State Park campgrounds during any 21-day period, and anyone who has stayed 14 of 21 nights must vacate for at least seven consecutive days before re-registering.
Prince William Forest Park bookings split by campground. Oak Ridge and the other National Park Service camping areas are reserved through Recreation.gov, either online or by calling 877-444-6777. The concessionaire-run Prince William Forest RV Campground takes reservations directly by phone at 703-221-2474. Goose Bay Marina and Campground and Aqua Land Campground book through their own offices.
What to expect on arrival
Site infrastructure varies by park. Smallwood State Park's campground features 18 campsites, 16 of which are suitable for both RVs and tents, while 2 are designated for tents only. Cedarville State Forest has a 35-foot length limit for RVs, with inner-loop sites offering electric hookups and outer sites accommodating tent camping without power. Neither state park offers sewer hookups at individual sites, and dump stations are available.
For full hookups, plan on the private parks or the concessionaire campground. Prince William Forest RV Campground offers 29 full hookup sites, 43 electric and water sites, 4 electric sites, a swimming pool, laundry, and hot showers. Its paved pull-through sites have a maximum length of 35 feet.
Expect wooded, shaded sites throughout the region. Bring bug spray for summer, and note that firewood restrictions apply at the national park unit.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Bensville RV trip?
You can book with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy. There is a grace period right after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and refund eligibility after that depends on how far out your trip start date is. Special situations like hurricanes or other natural disasters affecting the Chesapeake region are reviewed by the RVezy support team. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates and reach out to RVezy support if anything unexpected comes up before your trip.

Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Bensville options, and you can find them in seconds by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Once you're on the road, Charles County is a wonderful place to explore with a leashed dog. Smallwood State Park welcomes pets on its trails and campground loops, Cedarville State Forest has a dedicated pet-friendly inner loop, and Mattawoman Natural Environment Area offers shady walks just minutes from Bensville. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee (usually $25 to $75 per stay) and ask if they leave a water bowl, leash hook, or pet bed in the RV — many Bensville hosts do.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Pets-in-Parks.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Bensville?
Yes, RV delivery Bensville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the RV straight to Smallwood State Park, Cedarville State Forest, your driveway in Bensville, or even a friend's place in nearby Waldorf or White Plains, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, often $2 to $4 per mile round-trip. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a full setup and pickup package so you literally just show up with groceries, swimsuits, and your sense of adventure.
charlescountymd.gov/government/planning-growth-management/tourismHow far can I drive on a Bensville RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?

Greenbelt Park, run by the National Park Service about 45 minutes north, has 172 wooded sites just 12 miles from D.C. Cherry Hill Park in College Park is the closest full-hookup resort with a pool. Pro tip: book Smallwood at least 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/pages/southern/smallwood.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Bensville?
Bensville has one of the longest comfortable RV seasons on the East Coast thanks to its mild Mid-Atlantic climate. Spring (April through early June) brings highs in the 60s and 70s with cherry blossoms popping in nearby D.C., while fall (mid-September through early November) delivers crisp 60-to-75-degree days and gorgeous color along the Potomac. Summers run hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so a rig with strong air conditioning is a must. Winters are mild for the region (30s to mid-40s), and several private parks stay open year-round. Pro tip: October is the local insider's favorite — fewer crowds, no humidity, and Smallwood State Park's colors are unreal.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I actually be able to do this?
You'll do great, and the Bensville area is honestly one of the easier places in the country to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup walking through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedures, and you can text or call them anytime during your trip. The roads around Bensville are flat and forgiving: MD-210, US-301, and MD-225 leading to Smallwood State Park are wide, straight, and have minimal grades. You can also message a host before booking with any question. Pro tip: for your first time renting an RV, choose a smaller Class C (under 28 feet) or a travel trailer, and book a delivered setup so you can skip driving entirely on day one.
mva.maryland.gov/safety/Pages/MDDriversManual.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Bensville trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at Cedarville State Forest, cruising US-301 toward Waldorf, or stopped on the shoulder of the Capital Beltway. Roadside covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a text away to help troubleshoot anything specific to their RV. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone before leaving Bensville, and snap a photo of the VIN and license plate so you can share details quickly if you need a tow.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Bensville RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy rentals from Bensville can travel freely across the United States, which is fantastic because you're sitting at a major Mid-Atlantic crossroads. Popular routes include the 30-mile run north to Washington, D.C., a 110-mile trip west to Shenandoah National Park, a 150-mile drive east to Ocean City and Assateague Island, and a 200-mile southern push to Virginia Beach. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed but depends on the host and insurance terms, so confirm by messaging directly from the listing before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is a once-in-a-lifetime drive heading south.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Bensville?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to estimate. Travel trailers towed by an SUV or truck average 10 to 14 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 9 mpg. Gas prices in Charles County typically track close to the Maryland state average — check the Wawa or Royal Farms on US-301 in Waldorf for some of the most competitive prices around Bensville. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Maryland before crossing into D.C. or Virginia, where prices can swing higher near tourist corridors.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Bensville?
Plan ahead and you will have your pick of the best sites. Maryland State Park campgrounds like Smallwood and Cedarville take reservations through parkreservations.maryland.gov, and summer weekends at Smallwood often sell out quickly after release. For a Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day trip, aim to book 4 to 6 months out. National Park Service sites like Greenbelt Park use Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window. Private parks like Cherry Hill Park can usually be booked 1 to 2 months ahead, even in peak season. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have availability, even last-minute, and rates are often lower.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Bensville?
Driving an RV around Bensville is refreshingly easy. The main local routes — MD-210 (Indian Head Highway), US-301, MD-225, and MD-228 — are wide, mostly flat, and free of mountain grades or tight switchbacks. The one area to plan around is the Washington, D.C. Capital Beltway (I-495) and I-95, where weekday rush hour (6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.) can be brutal, so aim to drive midday or on weekends. Watch for low-clearance bridges if you ever venture into older D.C. neighborhoods (Rock Creek Parkway is RV-prohibited, for example). Pro tip: use the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on I-495 rather than threading through downtown D.C. and you'll keep your stress level near zero.
roads.maryland.gov/Index.aspxWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Bensville?
You'll find a great mix of options close to Bensville. Smallwood State Park offers 50-amp electric and potable water at every site, a dump station, hot-water bathhouses, and a marina on Mattawoman Creek. Cedarville State Forest's inner loop has electric hookups, a central bathhouse with showers, and a dump station near the entrance. For full hookups (water, electric, and sewer right at the site), private parks like Cherry Hill Park in College Park have you covered, along with pools and laundry. Most Maryland State Parks prohibit bringing outside firewood to protect against the Emerald Ash Borer beetle. Pro tip: buy firewood on-site (typically $7 a bundle at Smallwood) and you'll save the hassle at the gate.
dnr.maryland.gov/forests/Pages/invasives/eab.aspxWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental from Bensville?
You'll be surprised how home-like a modern RV feels. Most motorhome rental Bensville options sleep 4 to 8 people and come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, a queen or king bed, dinette and sofa that convert to extra beds, climate control, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for off-grid power. Smaller campervan rental Bensville options (Class B) trade space for great fuel economy and easy parking, perfect for two travelers. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities tab for Wi-Fi hotspots, bike racks, and outdoor kitchens — they make a family RV trip Bensville families take feel effortless.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my RV rental?
Hosts in Bensville offer a wide range of extras to make your trip easier. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans and dishes ($25 to $50), bike racks, paddleboards or kayaks, portable grills, generators, and pet packages. Pickup and drop-off times are usually flexible — most hosts allow a two-hour window and many offer late returns for a small fee. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to fully unlimited, and you'll see the exact terms on each listing before booking. Pro tip: bundle delivery + setup + linens at booking, since it's often cheaper than adding extras later.
charlescountymd.gov/government/planning-growth-management/tourismHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card (no cash to the host). The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is a pre-authorization hold on your card (usually $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV), not an actual charge, and it is released after drop-off assuming everything comes back as it left. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough video walkthrough with your host at pickup and return, return the RV with the same fuel and propane level, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it. Pro tip: keep all receipts from fuel and dump stations as proof.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Bensville during the winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Bensville are absolutely possible and a quiet, beautiful way to explore the Potomac region. Local winter highs average in the 40s with lows in the upper 20s — chilly, but rarely arctic, so most rigs with a furnace and heated underbelly handle it just fine. Several private parks like Cherry Hill Park stay open year-round with full hookups, while Maryland State Park campgrounds (Smallwood, Cedarville) close their main loops from November through March. Pro tip: filter for RVs with heated holding tanks and shore-power hookups, ask the host about a small space heater for backup, and you'll be cozy watching eagles soar over the Potomac while the rest of the East Coast is stuck indoors.
